WELCOME TO OPEN BOOK 2013!

We hope you enjoy the events at the third edition of Open Book as much as we enjoyed planning them. As with every year, we try to build on what we have achieved in previous years, while introducing new elements to the festival. Granta Publishers has been fundamental to Pulp Fiction - an installation of books on display in the Fugard Theatre for the duration of Open Book. The books that make up the installation (curated by Stuart Cairns) would otherwise have been pulped but thanks to the generosity of Granta, these books will now see their lives continued in libraries across South Africa. Libraries are vital to building a culture of reading in the country, so this project is an exciting one for us to be involved in. It adds significantly to the existing Open Book Library Project which stocks one library for a school each year. Westridge High School in Mitchells Plain is the focus school for 2013 and we would love you to buy a book to donate for their shelves! While it may not be new, the Open Book Comics Fest has certainly grown! Curated by Moray Rhoda, the festival has transformed into a four day programme which includes an exhibition (curated by Andy Mason), a marketplace, discussion events and workshops. New to Open Book is Poetica, a full day of poetry events curated by Toni Stuart. She has put together a remarkable series of events that kicks off with Poetry as Sword Poetry as a Tool for Social Change ending with the Open Book Poetry Slam. For the first time, we are running events on the streets there are several walking tours on the programme, all of which offer interesting insights into Cape Towns past and the places we walk or drive by every day. We could go on and on talking about the different events were excited about, but really, you need to go and see them yourself book your tickets through Webtickets! As always, all of this would be impossible without the support from our partners and sponsors. Thanks to each and every one of you! Enjoy Mervyn, Frankie and the Book Lounge Team
