Guidelines for Developing and Formatting of Course Content (i) (ii) The filled in sample format is enclosed for

Applied Mechanics. The page set up should be in A-4 size paper with left margin of 2.5 cm and Right margin is of 2.5 cm. Top and Bottom margins are also 2.5 cm each. And Gutter is 1cm It has header with information about names of course and course code (Font Size: Times new roman 8). Footer is having names of GTU, NITTTR and Gujarat state in Times New Roman 8 as shown in the sample format. Information in top portion of the format is to be provided by GTU. It has title Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Course Curriculum (Font Size: Times New Roman 12 Bold). It is followed by the Course Title and Course Code and a table indicating branches/disciplines and semesters in which this course is being offered. All These information would be provided by GTU. After this there are 9 points, which are to be filled in by the course curriculum development committees. (Titles should be in Times New Roman 12 Bold. All running content should be in Times New Roman 12 normal. However, inside the tables titles may be in Times New Roman 11 bold and running content in Times New Roman 11 normal). These 9 points are: 1. Rationale It should be written to highlight the importance of the course with proper justification by describing: (A) Application in industry of knowledge/skills developed by this course (B) Utility of this course in understanding other subjects in higher semesters. Normally its text should have 150 - 200 words. If some course is being offered in more than one branch/discipline then its rationale should be written in such a way that its scope takes care of all the relevant branches/discipline. 2. List of Competencies It is expected to formulate one or two competencies, which should be achieved /demonstrated by the students at the end of studying the subject/course. These competencies should relate with the competencies identified in industrial survey. Competencies should be at higher/macro level. If it is written at micro level then it becomes skills. Competency should be written in such a way that it should encompass most of the skills developed through that course.

Ideally one or two competency should be able to encompass most of the skills developed by that course, but if it is not possible due to nature of that particular course then one or two additional competencies may be formulated in that course. Competency Statement should start with observable action verb Competency statement should be written in Bold to highlight it.

3. Teaching and Examination Scheme (in tabular form) It should be same as given in programme structure. If any change is required then it should be got approved by the convener of the programme and committees of Deans. 4. Detailed Course Contents (in Tabular form) Course content should be organized in units. Normally in a course there should be about five to six units. In first column number and title of the units should be given. The title of the unit should be in bold letters. Unit numbers should be in capital Roman In second column the expected major learning outcomes should be provided. These learning outcomes are to be written at skill level in the cognitive domain generally in the understanding and application level. These learning outcomes would define the scope (breadth and depth) of the content to be taught and the approach/methods of teaching. Learning out comes should also start with observable action verb. Learning out comes should be numbered. For unit one there number may be 1.1, 1.2 etc. and for Unit two it may be 2.1, 2.2 etc. and so on. In third column the topics and subtopics related to that unit has to be mentioned. These topics and subtopics should be as detailed as possible. It is the choice of the concerned course committee to number them if required. 5. Suggested Specification Table with Hours and Marks (Theory) Total number of hours to be allotted to a course should be calculated based on availability of 14 weeks for classes in a semester. Only lecture hours are to be considered for this purpose. One period/hour per week is considered as 1 credit. Specification table should be developed after detailed discussion in the group. In the beginning, each unit should be allotted number of Hours, this would depend upon the periods/hours required to complete that unit in the class. Which in turn would depend upon the size and complexity of the content covered in that unit.

Then each unit should be allotted tentative total marks for that unit. These marks would depend upon importance of that unit and efforts/time required to learn that unit. Importance of the unit depends upon utility of knowledge/skills developed by that unit in industry/further learning. Marks of all the units should be adjusted to bring the total to maximum marks. Marks allotted to each unit should be then divided into R (Remembering or memory based), U (understanding based) and A (Application, analysis , evaluation and synthesis based). This would depend upon nature of the content covered in that unit. Normally the total marks in a course should be distributed in such a way that marks allotted to questions of R level are in the range of 20% to 40%, of U level are in the range of 30 to 60% and of A level are in the range of 20% to 40% of total marks depending upon the nature of the course content. This specification table would be a blue print for question paper in that course and would guide in designing questions according to level of learning. 6. Suggested List of Practical Exercises/Experiments (in tabular form) The practical exercises/experiments should be designed to develop the skills which are required to develop the desired competency. Every Practical exercise should be in the form of a skill in psychomotor domain and hence it should start with an action verb. In column two the unit number to which that practical exercise pertains should be mentioned. The number of practical exercises suggested should depend upon number of practical periods/hours available. More practical exercises than required should be suggested so that teachers/students have choice to select depending upon availability of the resources at particular institute. Study type practical exercises should be avoided or should be kept to minimum. Practical exercises which require operation of machines/equipment, measurement using advance instruments, dismantle/assemble of components/parts should be encouraged. Practical exercises requiring advance latest equipment/instrument/software (even if they are not available at present at polytechnics) should be suggested. Because they would be procured only when they are mentioned in the curriculum. Moreover, since more practical exercises than required are suggested, polytechnics may manage with other practical exercises

till such advance purchased.

7. Suggested List of Students Activities Student Activities should be designed to develop the desired competency in the students and to create awareness about the latest happenings globally and locally. For Global awareness internet/library based assignments/activities should be suggested For awareness about local happenings, survey type assignments such as survey of raw materials/machine parts and components available in the city, or visit to nearby industry/site should be suggested as the case may be. Some activities such as mini projects involving seminar presentation/report writing etc. may also be suggested to develop the decision making, communication and group working skills in students. More activities than required should be suggested so that students/teachers may choose depending upon local conditions. 8. Suggested Learning Resources (A) Suggested Learning Resources List of Books (in tabular form) At least 3 to 4 reference books should be suggested, More the better. Normally university is not going to prescribe any book as text book. Full Name of author, publisher and year of latest addition should be provided. (B) List of Major Equipment/Instruments/Machines Latest equipment/instrument/Machines (even if they are not available at present at polytechnics) should be suggested. Because they would be procured only when they are mentioned in the curriculum. Moreover, since more practical exercises than required are suggested, polytechnics may manage with other practical exercises till such advance equipment/instrument/machine/software are purchased. (C) List of Relevant Software/Learning Websites As many as possible useful websites should be suggested. Latest useful software should be suggested. 9. Course Curriculum Development Committee. Faculty members from Polytechnics

Name of the contributing faculty members should be written with initials, surname and proper titles such as Prof., Dr., Shri, Shrimati, Ms. as the case may be. Name should be followed by designation, department and name of polytechnic. Name should be in bold letter, all other details should be in normal letters. There should not be more than four names in the course committee.

Coordinator and Faculty members from NITTTR, Bhopal General Notes: (i) All of the above nine points must be present in the detailed course curriculum. If some point is not applicable, for example point number 6 (suggested list of experiments/practical exercises) may not be applicable if there are no practical. In such cases the title of the point should not be deleted. And Not Applicable should be mentioned after the title. Nothing should be copied and pasted in the format. If some details are taken from somewhere else then it should be typed fresh in the format. In case of copy and pest it creates difficulty in formatting the contents uniformly. All other information is self explanatory as shown in the example. It is specially requested to keep the format of tables same as shown the example There should not be more than two names from the NITTTR, Bhopal.
