The New Denons!

Our 2 big AVR brands, Yamaha and Denon, are releasing their new AV receivers in time for.. Father's day, my birthday or something or rather, which means 2 things to us: 1. Old models will become cheap and 2. New models will include more acronyms, I mean, features! What's cheap? Around the same time as the arrival of new models, Denon sent one last shipment of the [now] superseded AVR2113 and AVR3313. These are our two most popular Denon models. As you'd expect, Denon are keen to move the stock and have decided to clear them.

speaker terminals across the bottom of the receiver. For installation, a single row of terminals makes it much easier to connect cabling to the speaker binding posts, so a good addition. The X1000 also now includes in-built support for Spotify. In the previous generation, only the AVR2113 and up had in-built Spotify support. Physically, you also have a second "source select" knob at the front of the unit, which is again consistent with the rest of the range. The AVRX2000BK (AVR2113BK replacement) like the previous generation, gives us HDMI up-converting and 2 zones. The X2000 however, now includes a zone 2 pre-out and one extra HDMI. The X2000 has already picked up 5 stars from What HiFi? magazine.

The AVRX3000BK (AVR2313BK replacement) is still probably a tweaked X2000 but with more config and control options. The X3000 gives us two cool Zone 2 features. Firstly, we now get a second zone HDMI and secondly, it will now convert HDMI Audio to PCM. This gives us a lot more options for the second TV in the bedroom or AVR3313 7.2CH 125W MULTIZONE 4K TRADE PRICE [EX. GST] RSP [INC. GST] the entertainment area in the patio. The final addition that grabbed 1+ $1300 2+ $ 1200 $1499 my attention was the InstaPrevue feature. This is a feature from the $ RRP 1799 AVR4520 and is really useful.

There hasn't been a change in HDMI standards and a load of features were added in the previous generation Denons, but there are still some changes. I'll list a few as a taster. Throughout the range, Denon have now introduced colour coded speaker terminals and coloured boxes to display the features at a glance. The entry level is the AVRX500BK (AVR1513 replacement) and is still a solid discretely powered receiver. The next step is the networkable AVRX1000BK (AVR1713BK replacement). The AVRX1000 [and up] now features a single row of colour-coded The AVRX4000BK (AVR3313BK replacement) gives us the potential of up to 11 channels and a couple of subwoofer outs. You could make a very serious home theatre room or cover multiple areas of the house with just one receiver. Denon are continuing with the AVR4520BK because they presumably can't work out what they should add to it!

Running multiple TV points in a poor signal area
Radio Parts represents a huge challenge in terms of TV signal. We have a large number of TV points dotted around the showroom, testing rooms, office and boardroom. We are also sitting in the shadow of the city, with buildings now blocking signal from the transmitters and repeaters in Mt. Dandenong and Como.

A bad situation gets worse...

With the construction of a large apartment block in the adjacent Roden Street, our TV signal went from pixelating to nothing. The MER (quality rating) was registering low teens! To put that in perspective, anything below 20dB is terrible, so low teens is the digital TV equivalent of a flat line! We needed firstly a digital headend system and then potentially some pretty hefty infrastructure. Maybe large galvanised masts, and rather than the current domestic combination TV antenna, we'd potentially need to diplex / combine separate VHF and UHF antennas.

The choices
Step one, was the digital headend system. There are a few choices that have great reputations. Our installers speak about 3 brands, the Ikusi, TERRA and Kingray Professional. Each one had only positive reports, so we delved a little deeper. Since the Ikusi and Mastermaster have been on the market for longer, the installers were more familiar with them. On the flipside, Kingray's product support has been phenomenal (...and they were cheaper), so we opted for the Kingray!

The setup
We wanted ABC, SBS, 7, 9 and 10 (sorry community TV), so we needed 5 channel processors (KCC110). With this you get all the associated sub-channels also, so that's around 20 channels in total. The channel processors are on the left-hand side. (see image below)

In the centre, you have the launch amp (KLA110), which will provide power. The special thing about the Kingray launch amplifier is that it has brains. By connecting an everyday patch lead into a standard laptop, you can setup everything. You open the web browser (Internet Explorer) and type in the somewhat predictable 192.168.1.1 and user id and password (both are admin by default) and bang, you're inso easy! Other brands would have you buy a Comms module (not cheap!) and then get a degree in computing!

The result
Call us lazy, but we didn't need new antennas, hardware or dirty hands. The Kingray Professional did the impossible and bought our digital TVs back to life!

The future
Finally, a new transmitter has come online at 600 Bourke St. (as of July 30). That involves receiving a different signal, which means that we need a different UHF Antenna and to re-tune all our TVs, right?! Wrong! The Kingray Professional Channel Processors also act as Channel Converters. So if we receive a frequency of 123mHz, it can convert it to 321mHz. That means that you may only need to swivel the antennas and adjust the settings on a laptop!
