With the support of nine local
State Farm Agencies,
Eastern Panhandle Class AAA schools
have a league of their own, EPAC.
A new all-sports athletic conference was announced on
August 8, 2013 as six Class AAA schools from Berkeley
and Jefferson Counties have come together to form the
Eastern Panhandle Athletic Conference, EPAC for
short.
The league includes Hedgesville, Martinsburg,
Musselman and Spring Mills out of Berkeley County,
along with Jefferson and Washington out of Jefferson
County. The new league has been in talks for about five
years, ever since the new Spring Mills High School was
proposed.
The area athletic directors were just biding their time to
create a league in the Eastern Panhandle. The goal was
that when Springs Mills opened its doors, the new
conference would be ready to go - and thats what has
happened. The financial support from their corporate
sponsor has helped to make this happen.
The nine State Farm insurance agents from the two
counties, along with a matching grant from the
corporate headquarters, are bankrolling the league with
a tidy sum to operate it in its first year and expectedly
years to come.
The schools in the past have been part of several
different leagues, including most recently the Potomac
Valley Conference. However, the opportunity to have
an eastern panhandle West Virginia league consisting of
just Class AAA members for all-sports was the ultimate
goal.
The league, which is off and rolling immediately this
academic year, will have team championships, all-
conference teams and a coach of the year for each sport,
boys and girls.

Two buildings being constructed by
Hospice of the Panhandle on the
Berkeley-Jefferson county line are getting
closer to completion. One building is a
14-bed inpatient unit, designed to house
critically ill patients who have difficult
pain and symptom management for stays
of three-seven days. The other is a
consolidated office building that combines
Hospices four offices in Berkeley and
Jefferson counties. Both are expected to
open in early 2014.
A relatively rainy summer hasnt put too
much of a damper on the construction
project, according to Hospice owners
project representative Bill Cornett.
The contractors are working hard to
stay on schedule, Cornett said.
The total cost of both buildings is $11.6
million. More than $3.6 million has been
raised in a fundraising effort called
Building the Dream.Hospice officials
intend to sell the agencys current offices
on Waverly Court and Legado Drive and
will discontinue rentals of offices on
Winchester Avenue and in Bardane once
the move is complete.

the site, said CEO Margaret Cogswell.
We know that 2014 will be a very
significant year for Hospice of the
Panhandle.
