Tree Bingo

Objectives: To learn the names of different native trees found in Canada. Create awareness about the importance of forests. To have fun and learn! What you need: Tree Bingo Cards Tree Dice Alternative: letters spelling TREES and names of trees on a card Counters

What you do: Pre-Step Previous lesson(s) completed with students on the different types of trees that make up a forest. You will need to make a few Tree Bingo cards ahead of time and distribute to the students. This activity is intended to increase the frequency of contact with the names of trees. 1. Quick name recognition game. You hold up a picture of one of the six (6) trees and ask students to name it. This can be extended to also include pictures of leaves of the trees. 2. Discussion about why we need trees. Encourage students to look at the importance of conservation and the impact of logging. 3. Each student gets one Tree Bingo Card and counters used cover the tree name once called. 4. You roll the Tree Dice. One die will have the letters T, R, E, E, S and the other die will have the names of trees on it. 5. Call out the letter (T, R, E, E or S) and tree name that appears on top of each die. a. For example: T Maple / E - Oak 6. Students who have a matching letter and name can cover it with a counter. 7. Students who have a line of counters vertical, horizontal or diagonal wins! Alternative: Instead of using the dice to call out tree letters and names, you could put the letters and names in bags and randomly pull. You can extend the activity by adding more tree names to the blanks on the Bingo Cards. Extension: This activity can be paired up with a recognition game have students also identify the tree and its leaves. The cards can be modified so that the leaves are the only thing shown. Trees are essential to our environment and our survival and so we need to take care to protect and plant trees. Why are trees important?1 They provide oxygen, clean the soil, , clean the air and control storm run-off. They are carbon sinks (they absorb carbon dioxide) and are good noise barriers. They are essential to our survival on this earth. Some common trees that you can find throughout Canada are: Ash, Maple, Birch, Oak, Pine and Cedar. Cut out the dice by cutting along the outside of the shape. Then fold along the dotted lines so that you create squares. Tape/glue the side flaps (edges) together.
