Randi and Charlie Wilson

Randi and Charlie Wilson, both originally from Minnesota, moved to the Sun Valley/Ketchum, Idaho area in the early 70s. They spent the next 40 years camping, hiking, biking, crosscountry skiing and, Charlies favorite, fly fishing. Randi has been designing and selling jewelry for about 15 years, attending local art fairs and galleries in Ketchum and Hailey, Idaho. After living in such a beautiful place, it was hard to leave but they were tired of the winters. They desired an active place that was remote but offered outdoor recreation, nearby mountains, and opportunities to explore new things. In their search for a place to retire, they started with Arizona since they had been coming here every year to visit family and Randi regularly attended the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Show. After Charlie retired from the postal service and Randi from the Hailey Public Library, they toured various Arizona communities. They realized that Sun City Festival was a great match for them and moved in 2009. They enjoy all that Sun City Festival offers and are involved in the Ceramics/Pottery Club, Glass Arts Club, and Barrel Buddies. They are both working on their golf games, yoga, and regularly use the gym. They enjoy meeting new people, making new friends and touring Arizona.

What Motivates You?

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., When it comes to exercise motivation we all need at least Fitness/Wellness Director a little. Sometimes we need a lot! Everyone has different reasons for exercise. And some days those reasons are different than others. Many strategies and tools can be used to start or maintain an exercise habit. And typically, once exercise becomes habit and part of life, continuing isnt as difficult as starting.

Motivation is defined as that which gives direction and purpose to behavior. Some believe motivation will come with enough waiting. Perhaps we might be better served to understand that motivation is something we create. Creating motivation can be as simple as setting a goal or deciding whats important and striving to reach it. A goal for exercise/fitness should be simple and attainable. A goal of taking a 20-minute walk three times per week is very manageable and a great place to start. If possible, the goals should build on themselves and become more challenging over time. And, the goals can be revised and renewed as needed. Great tools for motivation are rewards. Food rewards are not included, especially if goals are weight loss. Having a treat such as a massage, an outing to a ball game or movie, or taking a short trip can be a great reward after a month of consistent (3 or 4 times per week) exercise. Or, the reward may not be as concrete. Keeping in mind the rewards of lower blood pressure or cholesterol, improved blood sugar, or better-fitting clothes can also be great motivators. Tracking progress or keeping a log is also a great motivational tool. Reviewing progress over a period of two or three months can be a great way to renew enthusiasm for the daily exercise ritual. This can be done with a pencil-and-paper log, or many high-tech on-line and electronic gadgets that are available. Another great motivational tool is to have support. Support could come from a wife, husband, sibling or child being a cheerleader. Or, support could be in the form of an exercise partner to ensure accountability. Few things keep us motivated like peer pressure. Another critical factor to keep moving is not expecting perfection and to be flexible. Always be aware of things in life getting in the way and remember its okay to occasionally miss a planned day of exercise. Maintaining exercise habits and good health practices is always challenging. Motivation is always critical and often wanes in the face of distractions. Having consistent and reasonable goals, finding encouragement from the outside and having an occasional reward are great ways to keep the ball rolling and be consistent with a healthy lifestyle.
