La expresin ms utilizada en ingls para expresar un deseo es: I would like = I'd like, seguida de:

un objeto directo:

I'd like a cup of tea. (Quisiera una taza de t.)

una forma infinitiva:

I'd like to meet them at the conference. (Me gustara conocerles en la conferencia.)

un objeto indirecto seguido de una forma infinitiva:


I'd like you to call them now. (Quisiera que los llamaras ahora.)

Dos expresiones importantes que se utilizan para hablar de preferencias son:


I would rather = I'd rather I would prefer = I'd prefer

"Would you like some tea or coffee with those cookies?"


I would rather have tea than coffee. (Preferira tomar un t en vez de un caf.) I would prefer tea to coffee (Preferira un t en vez de un caf.)

"What do you think, shall we go skiing or diving for our next vacation?"

I'd rather go skiing than diving. (Preferira esquiar en vez de bucear.) I'd prefer skiing to diving. (Preferira el esqu en vez del buceo.)

Todos estos ejemplos se refieren a contextos especficos; se utilizan sobre todo en respuestas a preguntas que incluyen una eleccin. Cuando hablamos de preferencias en general, se utiliza prefer sin would o like better.

I prefer tea to coffee. (Prefiero tomar t que caf [me gusta ms]). I like skiing better than diving. (Me gusta ms esquiar que bucear.)
