4.1

General

The purpose of a disconnector (isolator) is to open a circuit by means of physical separation. Disconnectors are also referred to as isolators and Disconnect Switches (DS). By operating the disconnector and earth switch at both ends of a circuit, the high voltage equipment can be made safe for maintenance.

4.2

Disconnector (Isolator) Type

Disconnectors referred to in the Power & Water Corporation (PWC) technical specification [4] shall be three-pole, outdoor and manually operated. PWCs preference is for horizontally rotating switch blades with a dual disconnect function. Disconnectors shall be heavy duty geared crank type. The hub of the crank type operator handle shall be located approximately 900 mm above the structure base plate for easy operation. The manual operation shall not require an operating force greater than 200 N. The disconnectors shall be capable of being motor retrofitted, if required at a later stage. Sacrificial arcing horns shall be used on the disconnectors to minimise deterioration of the wiping blades. The disconnectors shall be designed in accordance with [5].

4.3

Disconnector (Isolator) Rating

The equipment shall be rated as shown in Table 4.1: Table 4.1 Nominal Voltage Highest System Voltage Number of Poles Installation Frequency Insulation Level - Lightning Impulse Insulation Level - Power Frequency Continuous Current (Feeder) Continuous Current (Transformer) Continuous Current (Bus Tie) 66 kV Disconnector 72.5 kV 3 Outdoor 50 Hz 325 kV 140 kV 1250 A 1250 A 2000 A 66 kV Earth Switch 72.5 kV 3 Outdoor 50 Hz 325 kV 140 kV N/A N/A N/A

4.4

Auxiliary Contacts

Auxiliary contacts shall be provided for remote monitoring of the status of the switch. Each disconnector shall be provided with an auxiliary switch with six (6) normally open (NO) and six (6) normally closed (NC) sets of contacts enclosed in an IP54 housing. The auxiliary contacts should be specified to be "Early Make and Late Break" in case the substation is a double busbar substation. Each earth switch shall be provided with an auxiliary switch with six (6) normally open (NO) and six (6) normally closed (NC) sets of contacts enclosed in an IP54 housing. All contacts shall be provided in accordance with [2].

4.5

Earthing Point

The earthing switch blade shall be connected by a copper conductor, of suitable cross section direct to the substation earth grid in accordance with [1]. The disconnector shall be joined or bonded to the appropriate earthing terminals to form and effective earth in accordance with [1].

4.6

Earth Switches

Earth switches shall be heavy duty crank type. The hub of crank type operator handle shall be located approximately 900 mm above the structure base plate for easy operation. Typically earth switches are located on the line side of the disconnector. Refer to SLD B10-12014 for location of the earth switches. The manual operation shall not require an operating force greater than 200 N. In the event of failure the earth switch shall be of robust design such that it does not swing into the closed position under the action of counterweights or springs. Likewise, it shall not swing into the open position under the same action of counterweights and springs if the device is closed. Earthing switches must have a short circuit making current capability equivalent to the rated short time withstand current capacity of the associated disconnector.

4.7

Interlocks

Mechanical interlocks shall be fitted on all disconnectors so that the earth switch cannot be closed unless the disconnector is completely open and the disconnector cannot be closed unless the earth switch is completely open. The operating mechanism of the disconnector and earth switches shall not be fitted with interlock coils as a result there will be no electrical interlock between the disconnector and the circuit breaker. The operating mechanism enclosure for the disconnector and earth switch shall be padlockable in both the open and closed positions.

4.8

Bushings and Terminal Loadings

The designer shall calculate the static and dynamic loadings applicable to the terminals of the disconnector or earth switch as per [13]. The calculated short circuit loadings shall not be greater than the terminal static and dynamic ratings provided by the disconnector or earth switch manufacturer. It is the designers responsibility to determine suitable plant arrangements to satisfy all terminal loading conditions thereby mitigating against excessively long conductor spans. When determining the suitability of terminal loading conditions applying to the plant item the designer shall not use the static and dynamic loading ratings for the post insulators integrated into the disconnector or earth switch.
