DENR-NCR GIVES RECOGNITION TO DHL EXPRESS PHILIPPINES

For its active role in foiling illegal wildlife trade

DENR-NCR Regional Executive Director Neria A. Andin, CESO III and PAWCZMS Regional Technical Director Donna Mayor-Gordove awards the Certificate of Recognition to Gavin Convoy, Operations Director, DHL NAIA Office.

Reticulated Phython, and, assorted live spiders (Tarantula), were concealed in boxes and declared as t-shirts, stuffed toy and computer speaker. Apparently, the animals were sold online by illegal wildlife traders based in the NCR and were about to be shipped out of the country and into buyers from South Africa and Indonesia using the package delivery system of DHL. However, alerted by PAWD officials of possible violations of R.A. 9147, NAIA DHL Chief of Security Richard Armoreda readily surrendered the packages to the DENR-NCR. The idea of giving DHL an award was RED Andins brainchild as she hoped to encourage greater awareness and participation from both the private and public sector in the programs of the regional office.

We really need all the help we can get, she explains, as the battle against illegal wildlife trade goes on unabated especially with the advancement of information and communications technology. Accordingly, illegal trade of wildlife has taken on a new life because of the ease afforded by online trading sites to would be sellers and buyers. Thankfully, RED Andin adds, companies like DHL are at the forefront of technological innovations and, on this account, it is very important that DENR is able to forge strong alliances with industry leaders so that we are able to harness and put their competitive technological advantages to good use in our campaigns.
