IMS in Fixed Mobile Convergence

Common service machine for NGN
3GPP IMS selected by large number of operators to be the core of next generation fixed network providing voice and multimedia services over both mobile and fixed broadband networks Open interfaces towards terminals, application servers and other networks Supports mobility between different access networks

Wide range of services

Delivers today wide range of multimedia communication services for mobile terminals (gaming, videosharing, Push to talk etc.) Supports VoIP service over broadband for multiple different terminals (PC Client, SIP Phone, legacy telephone with analog to SIP adapter) Enables new multimedia services over broadband (videotelephony, video conferencing, interworking with mobile multimedia)

Common core IMS architecture and protocols

Common technology in mobile and fixed SIP infra provides economies of scale to both the operators and vendors Operators will have a larger choice of vendors to select from Vendors will be able to create the functionality once, and reuse it later
faster time to market avoid extra cost from replicating the effort Common interest for both the operator and the vendor

NGN standardization status

ETSI TISPAN selected 3GPP release 6 IMS to be the baseline for the SIP service machinery in fixed networks
2nd joint workshop March 2005 Joint work meeting July 2005 in TISPAN#7 and later in the autumn Possible IMS core changes will be standardized in 3GPP TISPAN is proceeding fast with the supplementary services
Straightforwardly adding services on top of 3GPP IMS TISPAN NGN release 1 standard ready by the end of 2005

Also ITU-T and ATIS are adopting the TISPAN IMS standards The industry as a whole has consensus over the SIP service machinery architecture and IMS standards

TISPAN NGN Architecture

IMS subsystem provides the SIP multimedia services (simulation) PSTN/ISDN emulation subsystem provides the legacy compatibility (emulation) The architecture supports nomadic mobility between access networks The same IMS services are available to multiradio terminals over cellular access, or WLAN+xDSL at home

3GPP NGN related activities

Fixed broadband access to IMS IMS Combinational Services Voice call continuity between CS and IMS (incl. I-WLAN) WLAN Interworking Universal Mobile Access (UMA)
Use the GSM CS services over WLAN access Multimedia Telephony Capabilities for IMS
The objective is to define the minimum set of capabilities required to secure multi-vendor and multi-operator interoperability for Multimedia Telephony and related Supplementary Services. Close cooperation shall be sought with TISPAN. TISPAN requirements, as captured in TISPAN-01002-NGN, shall be taken into account, and referred to where appropriate. The objective is to reuse and build on IMS capabilities provided in Release 5 and Release 6."

Summary
IMS will provide the common service machine for NGN multimedia Global fixed mobile convergence (FMC) standards provide fast time to market and economies of scale to all players TISPAN reuses 3GPP IMS
Fixed access specific modifications agreed with 3GPP SIP supplementary services on top of IMS Also ITU-T and ATIS are adopting the 3GPP IMS

Multiradio UE with Home WLAN (+xDSL) means FMC now!
