Course'description/goals' ! ! ! The!study!of!applied!voice!begins!with!the!assumption!that!all!singers!are!capable!of!improvement!in! vocal!tone,!musicianship,!and!selfKassessment.!This!assumption!is!predicated!on!the!willingness,!devotion,! and!selfKdiscipline!of!the!student.!Appropriate!repertoire!will!be!discussed!and!assigned!to!that!end.!The! objectives!are!as!follows.! ! To!provide!an!atmosphere!fostering!confidence!and!poise!in!singing! To!develop!good!posture! To!understand!and!use!diaphragmatic/costal!breathing!

ng! To!learn!to!relax!the!throat,!tongue,!and!jaw!while!singing! To!develop!correct!use!and!control!of!the!registers!of!the!voice! To!produce!accurate!vowel!and!consonant!sounds!in!a!variety!of!languages! To!probe!the!meaning!of!poetry!and!learn!to!interpret!and!communicate!the!text! To!broaden!cultural!understanding!of!different!historical!periods!and!diverse!musical!styles! To!gain!experience!in!musical!research!through!reading!and!writing! ! These!course!objectives!synthesize!with!the!Music!Departments!common!Learning!Outcomes:! Students graduating from the Department of Music should be able to:
1.!Perform!to!a!high!standard!on!at!least!one! instrument!or!voice! 5.!Demonstrate!functional!piano!skills! ! 6.!Use!with!some!fluency!at!least!one!music!related! computer!application!! 7.!Have!an!understanding!of!the!business!of!music!!

2.!Demonstrate!an!understanding!of!common!practice! and!post!tonal!theory! 3. Speak with conviction about the development of music in the western tradition 4.!Perform!in!an!ensemble!setting!with!a!knowledge!of! how!this!is!different!from!solo!performance!

8.!Confidently!undertake!research,!making!use!of! available!resources!(library,!online,!databases!etc.)!

! ' Course'requirements' ! ! Attendance/makeKup!lessons:!An!excess!of!two!lessons!or!studio!classes!missed!will!result!in!a! reduction!of!the!final!grade!by!oneKhalf!letter.!If!more!than!two!lessons!and!studio!classes!are!missed,!the! grade!reduction!will!be!cumulative.!Lessons!will!be!made!up!only!for!excused!absences.!!Excused!absences! are!granted!for!the!following!reasons:! Music!department!performances,!tours,!field!trips,!or!other!activities,!in!which!the!student!is!officially! representing!the!college,!and!for!which!the!student!has!made!a!reasonable!effort!to!communicate!such! absence.!

 Illness!K!confirmed!by!written!notice!from!a!doctor! Family!emergency!involving!illness!or!death! Every!effort!must!be!made!to!contact!the!instructor!24!hours!in!advance!in!these!instances.!!Because!of! professional!performing!demands!and!administrative!responsibilities,!it!is!difficult!to!reschedule!more!than! two!makeKup!lessons!per!semester.! I'will'be'diligent'in'making'up'lessons'due'to'teacher'absence.' ! Lesson'protocol' ! In!order!to!take!full!advantage!of!your!lessons,!it!is!wise!and!prudent!to!adhere!to!the!following.! ! Be!on!time;!you!may!enter!the!studio!at!your!lesson!time,!thus!encouraging!the!prompt! conclusion!of!the!preceding!lesson.! ! Arrive!warmedKup!and!ready!to!sing;!this!does!not!necessarily!mean!that!immediate!work!on! repertoire!will!commence,!but!you!will!be!ready!to!sing!both!repertoire!and!vocal!exercises.! ! Secure!an!accompanist!that!can!both!expertly!play!your!assigned!repertoire!and!collaborate! musically;!there!exist!both!extremes!!pianists!able!to!play!difficult!music!who!are!unmusical! and!those!who!are!musically!talented!but!lacking!in!technique.!It!is!not!in!your!best!interest! to!worry!about!whether!your!accompanist!can!play!your!literature.!I!will!intervene,!if! necessary.! ! When!assigned!repertoire,!it!is!your!full!responsibility!to!!! 1. Accurately!learn!rhythmic,!melodic,!and!expressive!components! 2. Accurately!translate!foreign!language!texts!!meaning!a!wordKforKword!rendering,!not! a!general!idea!of!the!text;!multiple!online!resources!are!available.! 3. Pronounce!and!sing!texts!clearly!using!IPA! 4. Rehearse!with!your!accompanist!before!lessons!!you!are!a!collaborator!in!musicK making! 5. Make!notes!and!markings!on!your!score!for!further!review!and!learning! 6. NEVER!(almost!never)!make!the!same!mistake!twice.!The!rate!at!which!one!improves,! both!technically!and!musically,!is!directly!correlated!to!the!diligence!of!ones!selfK corrective!ability!and!memory.! 7. Purchase!your!music;!copyright!laws!are!strict!and!all!of!us!do!our!best!to!observe! them.! 8. Schedule!a!regular!practice!time!during!the!week,!daily!if!possible,!that!you!protect!as! you!would!any!other!appointment.!In!addition,!find!a!practice!space!that!allows!you!to! make!sounds/noises!that!passersKby!might!find!humorous,!offensive,!or!simply! ludicrous;!you!must'be'able'and'willing'to'experiment'with'your'voice'without' feeling'intimidated.! 9. Listen!to!professional!recordings!(several)!of!your!repertoire,!if!available.!The!Curry! Library!database!contains!two!audio!libraries!of!classical!recordings!for!your!use.! Much!can!be!learned!by!listening.! ! Drink!plenty!of!water!(stay!hydrated)!at!all!times,!especially!the!day!of!your!lesson;!bring!a! water!bottle!to!your!lesson.!Absolutely!no!caffeine,!nicotine,!or!antihistamines!in!your! system! ! Get!adequate!rest!at!least!48!hours!before!your!lesson.!Do!not!come!to!a!lesson!having!slept! less!than!a!few!hours;!or!worse,!no!sleep!at!all.!Your!body!(voice)!is!your!instrument.!TAKE! CARE!OF!IT.! ! When!you!become!ill,!i.e.,!coughing,!sneezing,!runny!nose,!fever,!drainage!in!throat,!chest! congestion!K!DO!NOT!COME!TO!YOUR!LESSON!!We!will!schedule!a!makeKup.!Occasionally,!one! must!sing!when!ill!and,!therefore,!it!is!necessary!to!learn!how!to!manage!ones!voice!while! combating!a!virus.!But,!there!is!no!need!to!risk!infecting!others!by!entering!a!confined!space.!
