Organization Theory Assignment Submitted by Jorden Simick (2012B03)

Q1 ) Attending OT lectures is a waste of time as the subject matter has NO practical relevance to the Management of Organizations. Justify this Statement - (208 words) Ans: We've seen many popular approaches to management (Management by objectives, T groups, Theory Y, Theory Z, diversification, participative management) come and go with great regularity. According to Staw and Epstein's study of large industrialized companies in the United States, no significant improvement in organizational performance were observed resulting from an association with some popular management techniques. Scientific Management theory claims that if this approach is adopted, productivity improvement can be achieved. Taylor assumed that workers (in this case, students) are motivated only by financial gains (in this case, marks). However, in reality, not all students are motivated by scoring high marks, but also by social needs and personal egos. During our summer internship most of the students were told, Dont apply your Text book knowledge here. Now focusing on this statement, there must be a reason behind it. n numbers of theory can be formulated on this but again this will just be a theory with some random assumptions. So, my point is a theory on organization management has its own credibility but it also carries a baggage of narrow application. Also there is no empirical evidence that application of these theories leads to improvement in organizations performance so learning of these theories is a waste of time.
