A construction in front of floors is a special variation to offer a solution for improved thermal characteristics of a building. For offices and residential buildings in premium-priced city locations, for example, this construction type is ideal. By moving the insulation in front of the floor, an optimal solution is provided which minimises thermal bridges. So heat loss is kept to a minimum in winter and there is a more comfortable indoor climate in summer.

Low-rise buildings with rain-proof cladding (glass, wood, brick, fibre composite, vinyl etc.) still require a weatherproof substrate. This wall construction option provides a freeze-thaw-cycle proven and non-combustible A1 building envelope under ventilated cladding systems. It uses AQUAPANEL Cement Board Outdoor Climateshield (8mm) as the backing board for long-term moisture and wind protection and is suitable where there is no direct weathering from driving rain and where wind loads do not exceed 1.55 kN/m (likely to correspond to a building with 4 storeys).

Ventilated faades optimise physical comfort inside the building by creating a chimney effect that funnels away warm air and humidity. They can be installed with all standard and premium cladding products from the market including non-rainproof versions (standard glass and aluminium cladding as well as special granite and sandstone claddings). The KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall between floors as single or double stud construction with AQUAPANEL Cement Board Outdoor (12.5 mm) is recommended as the standard building-closing element. This type of wall is suitable for rapid closure of the building and provides a long-lasting weather-proof solution.

A KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall construction is ideal for existing buildings which require improved aesthetics with minimal disruption, or for projects where the original wall remains. Cracks, flaking or other wear and tear damage on the faade disappear as the curtain wall creates a fresh new appearance. Almost any surface finishing is possible or perfectly smooth, curved monolithic walls can also be created. No additional reinforcement of the primary building structure is required so calculations can be used based on existing statics.

In projects where the original faade does not fulfil todays energy saving requirements, the KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall can be used to provide improved thermal performance. The lightweight system is easy and fast to apply: special reinforcement of the primary building structure is not required and the solution can be implemented with minimum disruption to the building users. The additional thermal insulation not only helps to save energy costs but also adds to the buildings sustainability, making a positive statement about the owners.

The Allianz Arena in Germany is a powerful example of the versatility of the KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall. The Allianz Arena is a construction between floors. The substructure is sandwiched between 2 layers of Knauf Fire-Rated Gypsum Board built on Knauf CW 100 profile with mineral wool inside and 2 layers of AQUAPANEL Cement Board Outdoor on the outside.
Here the architect, Herzog & De Meuron, Switzerland, chose a special membrane produced by 3M to finish the building. A comparable structure was used by the same architect to create the National Stadium in Beijing, China, also colloquially known as the Birds Nest.

Promenadebyen, Odense, Fyn, Denmark The Promenadebyen project features exclusive waterside apartments in Odense Harbour. A prime requirement was that the faades should be able to resist high wind speeds and high moisture conditions. This was due to the height of the buildings and the wind factor, in combination with the high humidity conditions of the harbour. The specification of faade walls which combined a SBS steel frame system with a KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall resulted in a secure and slim construction with the high thermal insulation needed to meet the stringent Nordic energy consumption building regulations. Slotted profiles were used to minimise thermal bridges. The drylining solution has also maximised the effective area of the building particularly important in expensive waterfront areas where the demand for accommodation is very high.

Case Study
Villa Akarp, Malm Ring, Sweden This is Swedens most energy-efficient house: a plusenergihus which the owner claims will actually generate more energy than it consumes. During the construction phase, consideration was given to aspects such as insulation and thermal bridges, windows, air tightness, ventilation and energy consumption. The house is on one and a half levels and built with a double timber framework. It has a living space of 150 square metres. Extremely high thermal insulation requirements were met by using a KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall double stud system with insulation. This particular wall construction achieves a U-value of 0.07 W/mK with an insulation thickness of 400 and 545 mm. This thick insulation maintains heat in the house during winter. The ventilated faade allows warm air to go out in summer. Moisture is constantly funnelled away.

This standard economic solution can be used to create a better indoor climate and is non-combustible, diffusion-open and resistant to aging. It is produced using ECOSE Technology and is environmentallyfriendly. Thanks to its high level of compression and lightweight, it is easy to transport and lift. It conforms to EN 13162 standard.
Stone Wool
The new binder technology ECOSE Technology enables the production of natural mineral wool insulation materials which are based exclusively on fast-renewable resources and bonded using a bio-based technology free from formaldehyde, phenols, acrylics and with no artificial colours, bleach or dyes added. ECOSE Technology, and the natural brown colour which results, represents a level of sustainability and handling never achieved before:

Improving
Knauf Insulation Air-tightness Systems LDS LDS Vapour Control Layers are special foils made from polyethylene or polypropylene and are robust and resistant to aging. They are diffusion-open. A range of LDS Sealant Tapes is available for all kinds of openings, such as windows, doors or HVAC* installations, for interior and exterior use.
*HVAC = heating ventilation and air-conditioning
Increasing the insulation thickness increases the surface temperature and thus the comfort of the room.
Here, low surface temperatures are identified which are likely to promote growth of mould.
The lack of insulation of the window embrasure leads to energy loss. The rest of the faade area is sufficiently insulated.

Metal profiles
Corrosion-resistant metal profiles and accessories
A KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall system is constructed with a metal framework. Knauf offers a full range of profiles and geometries to suit all applications. KNAUF metal profiles are precision-engineered, high-quality steel sections used to form the metal substructure of the KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall.
Profile thickness and stud spacing is determined by local wind loads and seismic activities.
For
standard applications, profiles from 0.6 mm to of 1 mm or higher thickness should be used on climate zones or special applications,

Corrosion-resistance of metallic substructures in KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall systems For metal substructure kits, it is important to observe appropriate corrosion protection. Where different materials are being combined, compatibility must be checked in each case. For substructure kits of coldformed galvanised sections with associated stamped parts, refer to EN 13964. (Note: EN 12944 covers corrosion protection of metal structures.) A minimum protection of Z275 should be chosen for substructures in directly applied / water-managed exterior systems. For more demanding requirements, for example structures in exposed areas near the sea, a higher level of protection is required. Methodical ventilated systems are excepted from the given recommendation; here the relevant norms for ventilated systems have to be considered. Conclusion: Corrosion protection of profiles is an important consideration when using a KNAUF AQUAPANEL Exterior Wall. National standards must be observed.
Description Building components generally exposed to varying relative humidity up to 70% and varying temperatures up to 25C but without corrosive pollutants. Building components frequently exposed to varying relative humidity up to 90% and varying temperature up to 30C but without corrosive pollutants. Building components exposed to an atmosphere with a level of humidity higher than 90% and accompanied by a risk of condensation. This includes typical swimming pool environments. More severe than the above. Includes conditions typical in salt-water swimming pools, thermal baths, steam saunas.
EN 13964 C
EN 13964 D
Class C requires metal profiles Z 100 (zinc coating of 100 g/m) with an additional organic coating of 20m per side. Class D requires additional protection depending on use and exposure to corrosive pollutants. National standards may include even more stringent requirements (e.g. DIN 18168). Note: AQUAPANEL Maxi Screws with a special coating are also corrosion-resistant. They have been successfully tested in a salt spray water test for 720 hours.
