Adaptive Writing and Evaluative Commentary Checklist 2013 What Must I Do? My Adaptation A.

I must Create a new specified text (adaptation) by o o modifying the linguistic features modifying the content in the source texts

Create the intended effect(s) on the new audience to achieve the new purpose, and in the specified mode (spoken, written, online or multimodal) and the specified genre Modify the significant linguistic features in the source texts by o o o o Changing the LFs used in the source texts eg verbs to nouns, nouns to pronouns Adding LFs not used in the source texts Omitting LFs used in the source texts Retaining LFs used in the source texts

For spoken texts only: turn-taking, adjacency pairs, topic management strategies Spoken texts only: non-fluency features (eg fillers, backchanneling, minimal responses, hedging, vague language) and phonology (eg stress, pauses, intonation, vowel length, monophthongs, diphthongs, consonant clusters) My evaluation should: Compare my adaptation to the source texts to explain changes made and why in relation to new purpose, new audience and new genre. Select and explain key differences between the LFs in my adaptation and the LFs in the source texts Explain and justify changes I made in significant linguistic choices for my adaptation in terms of new PASC in relation to PASC of linguistic features in the source texts Select, explain and justify changes made in my adaptation to materials in the source texts Evaluate my adaptation in terms of its effectiveness what worked well/did not work well in terms of fulfilling the purpose of the task /text type , and why . Cite specific examples of specific LF from adaptation and the source texts to support comparative analysis of changes made in this particular LF in the adaptation eg changing 1st person pronoun in source texts to 2nd PP in adaptation (give the whole sentence to explain the effect of the change made).

Structure of a paragraph in the Evaluative Commentary Identify in the topic sentence 1 significant LF that has been changed in each paragraph in relation to new purpose, audience and genre Foreground the adaptation in the paragraph ie begin with references to the adaptation.

Compare the change made in the LF in the adaptation with the original LF in the source texts Cite examples from the adaptation and the source texts to show change made Explain the change in the LF Justify the change in relation to new PACC Explain the intended effect on the new audience Explain the differences in effects between the adaptation and the source texts Evaluate the degree of effectiveness of the change made in the LF in the adaptation in relation to new PACC Identify any area of difficulty in the process of adapting the source texts eg one source text uses a LF that is inappropriate in relation to its PASC and how this LF could not be used in the adaptation
