GIST Visit to the U.S. Department of State The Department of State is the United States federal executive department responsible for the international relations of the United States. It is the equivalent of foreign ministries in other countries. This afternoon will provide an overview of U.S. government activities to promote entrepreneurship in the U.S. and around the world. In addition, the State Departments Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) staff will discuss the exchange program alumni network in which Journey participants will be enrolled. Dr. Mohsin Islam Tiwana, Co-Founder of Artificial Brain Controlled Upperlimb Prosthesis
Growing up on the move, Mohsin witnessed extreme poverty and desperation in rural areas of Pakistan. After meeting a seven-year-old girl who lost her arm in the 2005 earthquake, he and his brother committed themselves to improving the lives of disabled Pakistanis by inventing and producing an affordable prosthetic device which will return hope and dignity to those who have already lost so much. The Artificial Brain Controlled Upperlimb Prosthesis provides a cost effective solution to people with limb dismemberment. In 2007, Mohsin received his B.E. degree in Mechatronics engineering from National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia. --MIT-EF Pan Arab Business Plan Competition, 3rd Place A proponent of getting outside of ones comfort zone, Rafik believes more young people should start their own companies and work for themselves. After helping found the Nile University in Egypt with a specific entrepreneurial focus, Rafik decided to walk the talk and partnered with one of his graduate engineering students to help develop a new and improved microchip, so portable electronics can last longer and use power more efficiently. SilGenix is an Integrated Circuit (IC) design company specializing in on-chip power distribution and management. Mr. Guindi founded SilGenix and received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, in 1995. Dr. Guindi has held various research positions in electronics at Cairo University, Nortel Networks in Ottawa, Canada, the University of Toronto in Canada and most recently at Nile University in Egypt. 16

--MIT Enterprise Forum Turkey, Business Plan Competition 2nd Place Winner Like most computer engineering students, Taner was pressured into accepting work with a big software firm in Turkeys capital Ankara, after graduation. Always a free spirit, however, he soon decided to quit his day job and found his own tech startup. Taner, who has cultivated his reputation as a talented DJ in clubs by night, knew that one social networking tool was missing: A place to share your calendar with friends to plan ahead for future adventures and figure out where the next big party would be happening. The solution he developed, called Gonnasphere, aims to organize and share what everyones gonna do on the social scene so no one can say they missed out. Gonnasphere is a web-mobile application that helps users organize their to-do lists and share the lists with friends. Mr. Yildirim is a young entrepreneur and recent computer engineering graduate of Bilken University in Turkey. His project, Gonnasphere, won second place in the 2012 MIT Enterprise Forum Turkey Business Plan Competition. Now, the company is developing iPhone and Android applications.

Alex Bakir helps manage Omidyars for-profit investments and nonprofit grants, focusing on government transparency zworking to encourage accountability and effectiveness in government, and property rights supporting organizations that help formalize land rights and increase security of tenure for the poor. Previously, Bakir has worked for Climate Change Capital, a London-based investment management firm, the World Bank, where he helped deliver grant financing to renewable energy and energy efficiency projects globally, and a number of additional governmental and nonprofit organizations.
Jim Bagnola is an international speaker, an executive coach and a corporate educator with expertise in the fields of leadership and body-mind management, focusing on how thinking patterns affect health, happiness, success, and the capacity to lead; his personal mission has been the coaching of young entrepreneurs and students on six continents for the past 20 years as chair of the board of Leaders Romania and traveling globally with AIESEC, the largest student organization in the world. Bagnola practiced numerous professions before becoming a Certified Speaking Professional in 2002.
Jeffrey Barclay is a Principal in the Boston office where his practice emphasizes patent prosecution in the area of electrical engineering. Barclays prior technical experience includes work as an electrical engineer in the Submarine Electromagnetic Systems Department and Submarine Sonar Department of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and as a research assistant at the Center for Electromagnetic Research, Northeastern University
Ravi Belani currently manages Alchemist Accelerator, a venture-backed initiative and venture fund focused on accelerating startups whose revenues come from enterprises (not consumers); previously he spent six years at venture capital fund Draper Fisher Jurvetson in Menlo Park. Ravi is also on the faculty of Stanford University where he teaches The Spirit of Entrepreneurship. Born and raised in Silicon Valley, Ravi holds degrees in engineering from Stanford and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Joost Bonsen, Lecturer, MIT Media Lab; Founding Research Fellow, MIT Program in Developmental Entrepreneurship
Joost Bonsen is an innovation ecologist studying global transformations at the level of invention in research labs, action in entrepreneurial ventures, and the orchestration of innovation ecosystems generally; he has taught a course in Development Ventures at MIT since 2001. He is co-founder of the Howtoons Project which distributes educational cartoons which show kids everywhere How To build things, and prior to MIT Sloan, Bonsen ran the MIT Founders Project which quantified the economic impact of MIT-related entrepreneurs.
Cathy Campbell joined CRDF Global in 2002 as vice president for programs, and has served as president since 2006, bringing three decades of international science and technology policy and program management experience including work and travel in Eurasia, the Middle East, East Asia and Latin America. Prior to CRDF, Campbell held a number of distinguished positions at the Department of Commerce, the U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Commission, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and the US State Department. Campbell is a member of a number of advisory groups and boards associated with international science and technology collaboration. 19

Leland Cheung is in his second term on the Cambridge City Council, where he has been a strong leader in economic development, community building, and regional cooperation; in addition to being the youngest member of the Council, Cheung is the first student to be electedhe was pursuing his MPA at the Harvard Kennedy School and an MBA at MIT Sloan as well as the first Asian American. Cheung has served as the Executive Vice President of The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAP), and on numerous other boards and committees at the state and national level.
Dr. Gloria Duffy oversees the organizational strategy, programming, publications, broadcast outreach, membership activities and fundraising for the nations largest and oldest public affairs forum. Dr. Duffy served as U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense and Special Coordinator for Cooperative Threat Reduction and founded and served as president and CEO of Global Outlook, an independent research institute on international security issues in Palo Alto, California.
Josh Constine is a technology journalist who specializes in deep analysis of social products. Prior to joining TechCrunch, he was the lead writer of Inside Facebook, where he covered Facebook product changes, privacy, the Ads API, Page management, ecommerce, virtual currency, and music technology. Constine has spoken at the South by Southwest Interactive and Music conferences, and has been quoted by The Wall Street Journal, CNN Money, The Atlantic, BBC World Magazine, Slate and more.
Janis Fraser is a Principal in the Boston office where she has been providing strategic patent advice since 1989 to clients ranging from startup biotech companies to multinational pharmaceutical corporations to academic institutions, assisting clients in obtaining or defending U.S. patents of inventions related to genes, recombinant proteins, antibodies, transgenic animals, pharmaceutical compounds and formulations, methods of treatment, antibody libraries, and screening methods. Dr. Fraser has received numerous honors include being named among the Top Women of Law by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly in 2011.
Catherine Cook graduated from Georgetown University (B11), where she majored in OPIM and marketing. Catherine has been reported on extensively by CNBC, MTV, ABC News, Fox News, CosmoGIRL, BusinessWeek, the San Francisco Chronicle and CBS. She has spoken at a number of high profile conferences, including the Foursquare conference, and spoken at events at Princeton University, Boston College, and Georgetown University.
David Feigenbaum is a senior and seasoned patent Principal in the Boston office where his practice emphasizes creative, strategic intellectual property planning and implementation to produce useful outcomes in general IP counseling, patent strategies, software licensing, opinions, due diligence projects for a broad range of clients, including individuals, startups, mid-sized businesses, and large corporations. Feigenbaum was recently recognized by Best Lawyers 2013 Boston Technology Law as Lawyer of the Year.

Dr. Jaleh Daies broad and distinguished career in academia, foundations, business, NGOs and government demonstrates her fierce determination to advance international science and technology development with a special emphasis on the involvement of youth and women. Since her days as a university professor she has gone on to consult for a wide variety of agencies and institutions, serving on civic and corporate boards and speaking around the world to promote the cause of scientific learning and discovery earning countless accolades, including being inducted into the Hall of Fame of Women in Technology international among many others.
Timothy French is the Managing Principal of the Boston office where his practice emphasizes patent and trademark prosecution in the United States and foreign countries, over a broad range of technology, with experience in patent and trademark licensing, trademark oppositions, patent and trademark related acquisitions, and some litigation and patent interference work; he also supervises the Foreign and Trademark Departments. French worked previously as process and materials engineer for E.I. du Pont De Nemours and Company and as plant engineer and manager with Tenneco Chemicals.
Sean P. Daley is a Principal in the Boston office where his practice emphasizes general IP counseling including agreements (license, supply, joint venture), due diligence, reexamination, opinions (infringement and validity) and patent portfolio development and strategy.
