INTRODUCTION

Definition of Cloud Storage Cloud storage is a service model in which data is maintained, managed and backed up remotely and made available to user over a network which is typically the internet. Cloud storage is a model or networked enterprise storage where data and stored not only in the users computer, but in virtualised pools of storage which are generally hosted by a third party Type of Cloud Storage Public Cloud Storage services, such as Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3), provide a multi-tenant storage environment thats most suitable for unstructured data. An enterprise-level cloud storage system should be scalable to suit current needs, accessible from anywhere and application-agnostic. A public cloud is one based on the standard cloud computing model, in which a service provider makes resources, such as applications and storage, available to the general public over the Internet. Public cloud services may be free or offered on a pay-per-usage model. Private Cloud Storage services provide a dedicated environment protected behind an organizations firewall. Private clouds are appropriate for users who need customization and more control over their data. Private cloud also called internal cloud or corporate cloud is a marketing term for a proprietary computing architecture that provides hosted services to a limited number of people behind a firewall. Marketing media that uses the words "private cloud" is designed to appeal to an organization that needs or wants more control over their data than they can get by using a third-party
3

hosted service such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Simple Storage Service (S3). Hybrid Cloud A hybrid cloud is a composition of at least one private cloud and at least one public cloud. A hybrid cloud is typically offered in one of two ways: a vendor has a private cloud and forms a partnership with a public cloud provider, or a public cloud provider forms a partnership with a vendor that provides private cloud platforms A hybrid cloud is a cloud computing environment in which an organization provides and manages some resources in-house and has others provided externally. For example, an organization might use a public cloud service, such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for archived data but continue to maintain in-house storage for operational customer data. Ideally, the hybrid approach allows a business to take advantage of the scalability and costeffectiveness that a public cloud computing environment offers without exposing missioncritical applications and data to third-party vulnerabilities. This type of hybrid cloud is also referred to as hybrid IT. Function of Cloud Storage Enables you to upload your computer files (photos, music, documents etc.) to a central server managed by an Internet company. It offers you the peace of mind that you're files are backed-up if anything should ever happen to your computer. You will be able to access your files from other devices.

The Benefit of Cloud Storage IT Infrastructure Service No wasted capacity if extra capacity is required, it can be purchased as needed, rather than over-specifying hardware and storage in advance. To cope with future

needs. Conversely, extra capacity can be handed back and de-provisioned if no longer required. No in house maintenance there is no hardware or environment maintenance to be considered in maintaining cloud based IT-infrastructure. With hosted servers, the operating system may still need to be maintained. Software As a Service Fast deployment of new services the overheads of platform provision and installation are eliminated, along with the base install and configuration of the application No in-house maintenance of infrastructure to support application the platform and hardware providing the service are provisioned and maintained by the provider. This area of cloud services is also of most interest to College staff and students. Many people already use Gmail / HotMail email or Google Apps services. User Cloud Service Access to data anywhere email / documents stored with cloud providers are accessible through any internet connected device with a web browser. Some providers offer specific support for portable devices (e.g. Apple iCloud). Easy to share data a number of user-centric cloud services provide features to share data with other users. Data is backed up although usually no liability is accepted for loss of data, in practice, cloud providers such as Microsoft and Google have robust data redundancy in place to prevent loss of end-users data. No in-house maintenance of infrastructure to support application on an institutional level, there are maintenance benefits. The platform and hardware providing the service are provisioned and maintained by the provider, although resource will still be required to integrate the service with in-house IT. Costs Cloud storage may be cost-efficient for many corporations and small businesses for everyday use, but for the average user of the computer and internet, the costs of cloud storage may outweigh its benefits. As a result users have other alternatives of storage such as: Local wired hard drive Local wireless hard drive External USB hard drive. 5 Tips How to Use Cloud Storage 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Pay attention to storage limit Encrypt your cloud storage Understand your clouds streaming capabilities Use secure devices to access the cloud storage Bring your clouds together

GOOGLE DRIVE

Definition of Google Drive Google Drive is a premium cloud storage service that is integrated with the company's other services and systems -- including Google Docs, Gmail, Android, Chrome, YouTube, Picassa, Google Video, Google Analytics and Google+. Google Drive, which enables a seamless browser-based interface between the users files and applications, competes with SkyDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage service which is similarly integrated with that company's applications and systems. Files added to one folder are available through a Google Drive web app or the Google Drive folder on each device. Changes made to one file in a Google Drive will be synchronized across all Google Drives.

History of Google Drive Google Docs originated from two separate products, Writely and Google Spreadsheets. Writely was a web-based word processor created by the software company Upstartle and
9

launched in August 2005. Spreadsheets, launched as Google Labs Spreadsheets on June 6, 2006, originated from the acquisition of the XL2Web product by 2Web Technologies. Writely's original features included a collaborative text editing suite and access controls. Menus, keyboard shortcuts, and dialog boxes are similar to what users may expect in a desktop word processor such as Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. On March 9, 2006, Google announced that it had acquired Upstartle. At the time of acquisition, Upstartle had four employees. Writely closed registration to its service until the move to Google servers was complete. In August 2006, Writely sent account invitations to everyone who had requested to be placed on a waiting list, and then became publicly available on August 23. Writely continued to maintain its own user system until September 19, 2006, when it was integrated with Google Accounts. Meanwhile, Google developed Google Spreadsheets using the technology it had acquired from 2Web Technologies in 2005 and launched Google Labs Spreadsheets on June 6, 2006 as the first public component of what would eventually become Google Docs. It was initially made available to only a limited number of users, on a first-come, first-served basis. The limited test was later replaced with a beta version available to all Google Account holders, around the same time as a press release was issued.

Benefit of Google Drive 1. Google Drive lets you send large files to your colleagues, clients and friends directly from your Gmail account. When you join Google Drive, you automatically have 5 GB of storage space. It is also possible to buy more go at a low cost. 2. Google Drive allows you to access your files remotely. SLIDESHARE Definition of Slideshare SlideShare is a Web 2.0 based slide hosting service. Users can upload files privately or publicly in the following file formats: PowerPoint, PDF, Keynote or Open Document presentations. Slide decks can then be viewed on the site itself, on hand held devices or embedded on other sites. Launched on October 4, 2006, the website is considered to be similar to YouTube, but for slideshows. The website was originally meant to be used for businesses to share slides among employees more easily, but it has since expanded to also become a host of a large number of slides that are uploaded merely to entertain. Although the website is primarily a slide hosting service, it also supports documents, PDFs, videos and webinars. SlideShare also provides users the ability to rate, comment on, and share the uploaded content. The current list of SlideShare's investors includes Venrock, David Siminoff and Dev Khare. The website gets an estimated 58 million unique visitors a month, and has about 16 million registered users. SlideShare was voted among the World's Top 10 tools for education & elearning in 2010. SlideShare's biggest competitors include Scribd.com, Issuu and Docstoc. Some of the notable users of SlideShare include The White House, NASA, World Economic Forum, State of Utah, O'Reilly Media, Hewlett Packard and IBM.

The Application of Slideshare; Zipcast In February 2011 SlideShare added a feature called Zipcasts. A Zipcast is a social web conferencing system that allows presenters to broadcast an audio/video feed while driving the presentation through the Internet. Zipcasts also allows users to communicate during the presentation via an inbuilt chat function.
12

Zipcasts do not currently support screen sharing with the presenter, a feature available in competing paid services like WebEx and GoToMeeting. Additionally, presenters using Zipcasts are not able to control the ow of a presentation allowing viewers to navigate back and forth through the slides themselves. How to Use Slideshare You need sign up and should fill out your profile. In your profile, you can include a link back to your websites URL, choose some tags to describe you, include an image for you or your company. Include your keywords in your tittle and in the keywords section so that people will be able to find your presentation either when searching on Slideshare itself or even in the search engines for SEO purpose. Remember to also include a good description for the video, as well, so people know the focus of your presentation without their having to check it out first. You can also add audio narration to your presentations.

Benefit of Slideshare 1. It can support your companys public relations efforts by acting as another thoughtleadership platform 2. It provides quick and easy feedback in the form of view counts (similar to YouTube) 3. It can boost SEO: Similar to how YouTube videos often rank on the first page of results generated by Google searches, keyword-optimized SlideShare presentations are also often among the top hits 4. It can increase traffic to your site 5. It makes it easy for your PowerPoint content to get more views: Once you create content on SlideShare, it can be embedded anywhere, by anyone; this, in turn, leads to more

views, as people outside your community embed your content on their websites, blogs, etc. Because it isnt as crowded as platforms like YouTube, SlideShare offers the opportunity by means of high-quality content to be a big fish in a smaller pond, especially given that many SlideShare presentations are very basic It offers an easier and less expensive means of content creation, as compared to YouTube It offers the opportunity to identify new partners and business contacts. SlideShare PRO, in particular, enables users to specifically track views and downloads to know exactly who downloaded files It plays well with other social media tools: You can easily align SlideShare with other social media tools by putting its share button on your corporate website, as well as sharing recent uploads on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.

Tips for Using Slideshare 1. Use existing content, but update slides and trim fat as necessary. Any existing PowerPoint presentation that doesnt contain confidential information is fair game for use on SlideShare. 2. Keep it simple, but make it visually interesting. If creating new content specifically for SlideShare, use as few slides as possible to convey your ideas, and keep text to a minimum. Where possible, try to tell the story through images or video, as opposed to text. 3. Enable embedding. An incredibly useful feature of SlideShare is the fact that if you allow for it anyone can embed your presentations on their websites, blog posts, Facebook page, etc. When they do, they expand your reach exponentially. 4. Optimize for search. SlideShare content ranks very well in external searches engines like Google and Bing, so use this to your advantage. It is important to use titles, descriptions and tags in such a way that they facilitate the location of your material online. 5. Add hyperlinks. Add a hyperlink to your corporate website (or Facebook page or Twitter feed or LinkedIn page) on the front page and last page of your slide decks, in case someone who enjoyed the presentation should want to learn more about your company. 6. Integrate your SlideShare, LinkedIn and Facebook accounts. LinkedIn and Facebook offer its users SlideShare integration. So be sure to add the SlideShare apps for LinkedIn and Facebook. Then all you need to do is log in with either service on SlideShare and it will enable automatic sharing across both networks. 7. Take advantage of SlideShare analytics. By reviewing how many views, comments and shares your presentations get, youll get a feel for what your audience is and isnt interested in. 8. Invest in SlideShare Pro if you want leads. If you want to leverage the full power of SlideShare to acquire new partners or customers, you can upgrade your account to SlideShare Pro, which will provide you with insight into whos viewing your decks.

SCRIBD

Definition of Scribd Scribd /skrbd/ is a document-sharing website that allows users to post documents of various formats, and embed them into a web page using its iPaper format. Scribd was founded by Trip Adler, Tikhon Bernstam, and Jared Friedman in 2006. Scribd's major competitors are Slideshare, Docstoc, edocr, WePapers, and Issuu. History of Scribd The idea for Scribd was originally inspired when Trip Adler was at Harvard and had a conversation with his father, John R. Adler, about the difficulties of publishing academic papers. He teamed up with confounders Jared Friedman and Tikhon Bernstam and they attended Y Combinator in Cambridge in the summer of 2006.

Scribd was launched from a San Francisco apartment in March 2007 and quickly grew in traffic. In 2008, it ranked as one of the top 20 social media sites according to Comscore. In June 2009, Scribd launched Scribd Store, and shortly thereafter closed a deal with Simon & Schuster to sell ebooks on Scribd. Over 150 publishers including Random House, Wiley, Workman, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson, Harvard University Press and Stanford University Press are now associated with Scribd. ProQuest began publishing dissertations and theses on Scribd in December 2009.
15

In October 2009, Scribd launched its branded reader for media companies with The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Huffington Post, TechCrunch and MediaBistro. Over 100 media companies now use Scribds branded reader to embed source material into their stories. In August 2010, news stories began to break and documents and books began to go viral on Scribd including the overturned Prop 8 and HPs lawsuit against Mark Hurds move to Oracle Corporation. Adler is currently the CEO of Scribd, where he is responsible for the product and strategic direction of the company. BusinessWeek named Adler one of the Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs 2010.

Technology of Scribd Scribd used iPaper, which is a rich document format similar to PDF built for the web, which allows users to embed documents into a web page. iPaper was built with Adobe Flash, allowing it to be viewed the same across different operating systems like Windows, Mac OS, and Linux, without conversion, as long as the reader has Flash installed. Although Scribd has announced non-Flash support for the iPhone. All major document types can be formatted into iPaper including Word docs, PowerPoint presentations, PDFs, OpenDocument documents, OpenOffice.org XML documents, and PostScript files. All iPaper documents are hosted on Scribd. Scribd allows published documents to either be private or open to the larger Scribd community. The iPaper document viewer is also

16

embeddable in any website or blog, making it simple to embed documents in their original layout regardless of file format. Scribd iPaper requires Flash cookies to be enabled, which the default is setting in Flash. If the requirements are not met, there is no message; the white or grey display area is simply blank. Scribd launched its own API to power external/third-party applications. However, only a few applications use this API. On May 5, 2010, Scribd launched the largest implementation of HTML5 to date at the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco. TechCrunch reported that Scribd is migrating away from Flash to HTML5. Scribd Feature Faster and friendly This design strives to connect the Scribd homepage experience more closely with the mobile experience. JUSTCLOUD.COM Justcloud.com Review JustCloud is a relatively new online backup and synchronization service. Founded in 2010, the JustCloud team thought about how to revolutionize online backup and make it more accessible for everyone. They came up with the idea of unlimited online backup, as this is the easiest way to organize your files. Granted, the idea of unlimited online backup is not new: Carbonite and Backblaze also offer unlimited online backup. So there is some competition in the space and we are going to see whether JustCloud can live up to our expectations.

It is very compelling to combine backup and synchronization in one solution. Yes, backups are necessary, but the user also needs their files across multiple devices. In example, for my personal use I have an iPad and a smartphone. At home, I tend to work with a Windows PC. So I have at least 3 devices that I need to sync data across. Fortunately, JustCloud comes with a 1-GB free syncing space. 1 GB is not much, but certainly enough for the occasional syncing of documents or PowerPoint presentations. If you need more space you can extend your syncing folder up to 20 GB, at an additional cost. Justcloud.com Feature Justcloud.com is not only a backup solution but also a syncing and file sharing suite there is a lot for user to look at: Unlimited online backup File sharing ability 1 GB of free syncing space Mobile access File versioning
18

Encrypted and secure online backups 100% automated Tips to Use Justcloud.com There are three easy steps to use Justcloud.com: 1. Register an account with your e-mail and password. 2. Download the software on your Windows machine or Macintosh, and install it. 3. Select your files or let the software do the selection for you. There is no need to mess around with menus or other complicated items, because it is all done automatically.

Once you have installed the software, your backup starts with uploading the selected files. With the new version 2.1.1.9 of JustCloud the service uses Amazon S3 servers, which speeds up the backup significantly and also adds another layer of security to your files. Another advantage is that the JustCloud client is a very lightweight piece of software that does not take much system resources and thus doesnt slow your machine down during backup.

19

Justcloud.com Security Security is one of the major issues when thinking about online backup. You need to make sure that nobody can spy on your data. Especially when you have sensitive files that is crucial to your business or personal use. Hackers are everywhere, and especially as a Windows user your PC is prone to attack. However, in many cases the best security isnt worth a dime if you dont choose your passwords wisely. Thats why it is important to set up a secure password when registering for JustCloud or any other service. With a secure password in place you can safely upload your files with JustCloud as it uses the Internet standard AES encryption. This encryption method is also used by banks and other institutions that rely heavily on data security.

Operating Systems that Justcloud.com Run On Justcloud works on the following operating systems: Windows 8 Windows 8 RT Windows 7 Windows Vista Windows XP Mac OS X 10.5+ Debian Linux Android iOS Blackberry Windows Phone 8 Kindle Fire

If your cell phone isn't yet supported you can access backed up files through Justcloud.com mobile site http://mobilemy.justcloud.com

YOUTUBE

Definition of Youtube YouTube is a video-sharing website, created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005 and owned by Google since late 2006, on which users can upload, view and share videos. The company is based in San Bruno, California, and uses Adobe Flash Video and HTML5 technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals, although media corporations including CBS, the BBC, Vevo, Hulu, and other organizations offer some of their material via the site, as part of the YouTube partnership program. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users can upload an unlimited number of videos. Videos considered to contain potentially offensive content are available only to registered users at least 18 years old. YouTube, LLC was bought by Google for US$1.65 billion in November 2006 and now operates as a Google subsidiary. History of Youtube YouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all early employees of PayPal. Hurley had studied design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, while Chen and Karim studied computer science together at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. According to a story that has often been repeated in the media, Hurley and Chen developed the idea for YouTube during the early months of 2005, after they had experienced difficulty sharing videos that had been shot at a dinner party at Chen's apartment in San Francisco. Karim did not attend the party and denied that it had occurred, while Chen commented that the idea that YouTube was founded after a dinner party "was probably very strengthened by marketing ideas around creating a story that was very digestible". Karim said that the inspiration for YouTube came from Janet Jackson's role in the 2004 Super Bowl incident, when her breast was accidentally exposed during her performance. Karim
21

could not easily find a video clip of the incident online, which led to the idea of a video sharing site. Hurley and Chen said that the original idea for YouTube was a video version of an online dating service, and had been influenced by the website Hot or Not. YouTube began as a venture-funded technology start up, primarily from an $11.5 million investment by Sequoia Capital between November 2005 and April 2006. YouTube's early headquarters were situated above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. The domain name www.youtube.com was activated on February 14, 2005, and the website was developed over the subsequent months. The first YouTube video was entitled Me at the zoo, and shows co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo. The video was uploaded on April 23, 2005, and can still be viewed on the site.

Features Video Technology Playback Viewing YouTube videos on a personal computer requires the Adobe Flash Player plug-in to be installed on the browser. The Adobe Flash Player plug-in is one of the most common pieces of software installed on personal computers and accounts for almost 75% of online video material. Uploading All YouTube users can upload videos up to 15 minutes each in duration. Users who have a good track record of complying with the site's Community Guidelines may be offered the ability to upload videos up to 12 hours in length, which requires verifying the account, normally through a mobile phone. When YouTube was launched in 2005, it was possible to upload long videos, but a tenminute limit was introduced in March 2006 after YouTube found that the majority of videos exceeding this length were unauthorized uploads of television shows and films. The 1022

minute limit was increased to 15 minutes in July 2010. File size is limited to 2 GB for uploads from the YouTube web page, or 20 GB if up-to-date browser versions are used. Quality and Codecs YouTube videos are available in a range of quality levels. The former names of standard quality (SQ), high quality (HQ) and high definition (HD) have been replaced by numerical values representing the vertical resolution of the video. The default video stream is encoded in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format, with stereo AAC audio. 3D Video In a video posted on July 21, 2009, YouTube software engineer Peter Bradshaw announced that YouTube users can now upload 3D videos. The videos can be viewed in several different ways, including the common anaglyph (cyan/red lens) method which utilizes glasses worn by the viewer to achieve the 3D effect. The YouTube Flash player can display stereoscopic content interleaved in rows, columns or a checkerboard pattern, side-by-side or anaglyph using a red/cyan, green/magenta or blue/yellow combination. In May 2011, an HTML5 version of the YouTube player began supporting side-by-side 3D footage that is compatible with Nvidia 3D Vision. Content Accessibility YouTube offers users the ability to view its videos on web pages outside their website. Each YouTube video is accompanied by a piece of HTML that can be used to embed it on any page on the Web. This functionality is often used to embed YouTube videos in social networking pages and blogs. Embedding, as well as ranking and commenting, can be disabled by the video owner. How to Use Youtube 1. Log on to the YouTube site and find several categories that you can browse to watch videos. To start, sign up for a free account. An account can save your ratings and favourite videos. 2. Watch the promoted videos. Television network and movie studios often offer free peeks at their new shows and trailers on YouTube. To see the newest studio offerings, look under "Promoted Videos." 3. Create a playlist on YouTube. You can also use YouTube to create multiple playlists featuring your favourite site videos. 4. Upload your own videos to YouTube. Click the "Upload" link on the main page. Sign in with your login information and upload the file with a title and description. 5. Rate the videos on YouTube. To rate a video, simply click on the number of stars that you feel the video deserves. The videos with the best ratings appear under the category "Top Rated." 6. Check out the Test Tube area of YouTube. This section of the website is where YouTube tests out new features before they are officially launched on the site.
