N e w s l e t t e r
A very special welcome to Matthew Chiles, Finn Courtney, Arlette Delaborde, Tila Te Whare and their families to Kaikorai Primary School!

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents, The winter sports season has drawn to a close with many teams and individuals doing extremely well. Many thanks to all of our parents and teachers who have helped coach or manage sports teams this season. Your support is greatly appreciated! The editors are working very hard on each classes contribution to this years school movie and we hope that you have marked October the 30th at 6pm on your calendar. The lm will be shown at the Regent Theatre with a red carpet premiere. You could imagine that there is a considerable cost to hiring the Regent Theatre but we would like to make this a free screening to all those who want to attend. To fund the premiere we are going to use crowd funding. More information about crowdfunding and www.pledgeme.co.nz can be found on the next page. Our school continues to have a strong reputation in the community and this is reected in our roll numbers. We will have limited spaces available next year so if you know anyone who is intending on enrolling at school next year then please encourage them to make contact as soon as possible whether they are in zone or not. Kind regards, Simon Clarke

Junior News
Independence is our value this term and what a good time to put it in to practise during swimming which began on Wednesday. Swimming will run for all of next week as well. We encourage the children to be responsible for getting their belongings to and from the pool. Thank you to parents who have named their childs belongings this is a big help if things get left behind at the pool. PMP has ended for the term and a huge thank you goes to all the parent helpers who come along each time to help. We could not run this programme without your input. We will let you know when PMP starts in Term 4. Fun Friday has 3 more session to run. Please come along and help we urgently need more helpers. Marvellous Mammals continues to be our focus. There has been a lot of discovering and discussing about what animals are mammals and how we know that they are mammals. We are learning the difference between a question and a comment and how to ask good questions. We are hoping that you as parents are being asked some challenging questions too and that you will show your child ways of nding information to answer these queries. Happy learning together.

Middle News
The underground topic is turning out to be really interesting. Two speakers have come and talked about their work. Some children have been on visits to jewellers to nd out about gold and more trips are being planned. We met Amber from Oceania Gold. She came and brought along gold, rocks, and tools that she uses. She taught us about gold mining. I learnt about all kinds of rocks. She answered questions like: Can you make anything out of gold? What do the neighbours think of the mines? If you nd gold somewhere, is it yours? Have you found diamonds in the mine? Katie is a civil engineer. She came and told us about water and pipes under the ground. She told us about where water goes through pipes. We know that there is a lot going on under our feet that we dont see. When you are out walking, be on the lookout for storm water grates and other signs that things are underground. The school playground development has got us observing, noticing and wondering too.

Senior News
The children enjoyed an action-packed morning at The Edgar Centre last Friday morning. They participated in modified games and activities designed to give opportunities for lots of fun and skill development. The stations included skill development in: agility and speed, large balls, soccer, rugby and hockey. It was a very enjoyable morning, and we appreciated all the effort and time given to the children by the organisers and the students. All classes are at different stages in their topic work, continuing to develop their inquiry investigations, completing filming, and exploring the science concepts within a topic about moving loads. Our music programmes over the last several days has focused on building the songs which will be included in our school movie. Confidence and enthusiasm has grown very nicely, and the senior classes are providing positive leadership for younger children in the school. It has been exciting to see the playing area behind the hall cleared this week. We are all looking forward to having a large, flat field to play on in the near future.

Board of Trustees News

You may have noticed something new at the far end of the school recently. There are some new security fences, the south end of the school is cordoned off and the dozers are about to arrive!! This means that the rst stage of our brand new playing area is under way and we will soon have a fantastic new (and level) grass area that the whole school can enjoy. This is the rst large landscaping project the Kaikorai primary has undertaken for many years and we are all excited about the prospect of increasing our grass playing area. The planning for the new playground started well over a year ago, and was prompted by our growing roll and by a desire to increase the natural outdoor space for our children. A huge thank you for the support of the Board of Trustees, the Parents Group and all of the staff and parents who have contributed towards this project during this period. We hope that this project will be nished in late November and that the children will get a few weeks before the end of year to enjoy their new space. I will keep you updated as we transform this sloping area into a play ground that we can all be proud of.

Pledge Me!
Pledge me is a crowd funding website that we are using to raise money to cover the costs of the screening of this years movie. We are planning on making the premiere of the movie free for all who wish to attend and have a full house of around 1,500 people attend. We need to raise $6000 which will cover the cost of the Regent and all of the merchandise and events that we offering. You can make a pledge on preferential seating, limousine rides with the stars, T Shirts or business sponsorship packages. A full list of packages is available at https://www.pledgeme.co.nz/1273 How it works . . . Simply make a pledge on the product that you would like to purchase and enter your credit card details. No money will be taken from your credit card unless we get to the $6000 mark. If we dont make the $6000 mark you incur no costs but we will be charging entry for everyone to attend the premiere if we dont reach our target.

Board member Simon Hornal, Ken Cochrane and Principal Simon Clarke turn the rst sod of the back eld redevelopment.
