My Year in Science: 8

This year in science we will learn lots of interesting things, including, but not limited to the following: The Process of Inquiry (Standard 8Sa): How to design a controlled scientific experiment, and then conduct it safely and accurately. How to analyze your data and use it to draw conclusions. How to develop new questions based on the results of your investigation. Why its important for your experiment to be reproducible.

The History of Life on Earth (Standard 8Sb): How adaptations help populations survive in their environment. How fossils are formed and what they can tell us about the past. How disasters like comet strikes and volcanoes have changed the planet and the creatures that live on it. How and why the Earths long history has been divided into smaller units of time. How the geologic time scale can help us understand the diversity of life over time. How different factors, natural and man-made, can cause extinction.

How the Earth Works (Standard 8Sc): How the three layers of the earth differ. How scientists use sound and magnetic to investigate the inside of the earth. How earthquakes are formed and how to find their epicenters. How the three main types of rocks circle through the rock cycle. What the study of tectonic plates can tell us about the earth. How natural forces like volcanoes and internal pressure shape the earths surface. How aerial photos, satellite images, and topographic maps help us understand regional features.

Astronomy and Space (Standard 8Sd): Whats in our solar system and how these objects move What the surface features of the sun are and how they can affect the earth How the movement of the earth and moon days, years, tides, eclipses and more. How the earths tilt changes the length of days, and gives us seasons. How gravitational forces work and how they influence tides and orbits. Where our sun is in the universe, and how our galaxy compares to others. How scientists use tools and technology to explore space.

All about Forces and Motion (Standard 8Se): How to use formulas and graphs to measure motion and speed. How forces affect the speed and direction of objects. How to predict the effect forces have on moving objects How balanced and unbalanced forces change an objects motion How to understand the concept of inertia

All about Waves (Standard 8Sf): How types of waves differ, and how energy moves through them. The properties of waves and what causes waves to change. How sound waves and your ears create your hearing. How light waves and your eyes create sight. Why and how we see different colors. How the electromagnetic spectrum is set up and it shows.
