The Bicycle Race

By Shalini Gupta

hen the animals of Sundarvan came to know that a bicycle race was being held the next month, they all became very ecstatic about it.

Chimpu Monkey, Monu Rabbit, Baby Cat and Baggy Jackal had already started training for the upcoming race. Chimpu will win the race like he does every time. This thought was perturbing Baggy again and again so much that he stopped practicing completely.

VENKI

While all the animals were busy practicing for the event in the big ground of Sundarvan, Baggy was sitting dispiritedly in one corner. One day, Jumbo Elephant came there and saw Baggy. He couldnt bear to see Baggy getting disheartened like this and decided to speak to him about his problem. Baggy, why are you sitting here alone? Shouldnt you be practicing just like your friends? There are only a few days left for the race, Jumbo said. Uncle Jumbo, you already know that Chimpu is a pro at riding a bicycle. Whats the point of practicing when I know that he only will win the race? Jumbo thought for a while before answering: Baggy, I know Chimpu is a champion but you cant just sit and do nothing. This is not the solution to a problem. Anyway, people who work hard always win. You must have surely heard of that. Jumbos words motivated Baggy and he felt urged to train hard and win the race. He acted upon his thinking and learnt to ride the bicycle quickly in a few days. The race began at the scheduled date. At first, it was Chimpu who was leading the race, but soon Baggy rode at a greater speed and left him behind. He soon crossed the finish line and thus won the race. When Sher Singh declared Baggy as the winner of the bicycle race and presented him with the trophy, Baggy broke down in tears. Jumbo came forward and hugged Baggy tightly in his arms.

Spirit of the Game

By Bhagwat Prasad Pandeya

he talkative birds from all over served as the news reporters for Champakvan. This time too Champak van inhabitants came to know through them that Olympics were being held in London. Every evening, all the animals and
July (First) 2012

birds met under the Peepal tree at the banks of Rupa River. When they had all reached there, the eagle gave out a sigh of sadness and said, Its really unfortunate that the Olympic Games are being held so far away. Had they been organised somewhere near, we could have watched them live! Chulbul Squirrel quickly descended the tree and said, Friends, think of something so that we can watch the Olympics in front of us!
7

The way you are saying, its as though the games are being held at the banks of the nearby pond! Do you even know how far away London is? Its in Europe, very far away from here, the eagle told her. Then Bhallook Bear cleared his throat and said, If we use our brains, then not only Chulbuls, but everybodys dream of watching the Games can be fulfilled! Really? How? The eagle held his head up in anticipation. There is a big ground near Brahmatal. We can easily organise any game like the Olympics there, Bhallook said, putting an end to everyones curiosity. Yes, its a great suggestion. Dad also says that games not only help us in staying fit, but also increase our potential to compete in life, Prince Babbar also nodded his head in agreement. This led to a loud applause among everybody present there. After that, the Prince delegated different duties of organising the Games to Appu Elephant, Shera, the mascot of the Commonwealth Games and Bhallook. Many other animals were also involved in this process. From the next day onwards, all animals got busy in preparing for the games. Somebody

was making soft mattresses with the grass, while somebody was getting the boxing ring ready with the thick creepers. The elephants made the goal posts with the dried trunks of trees and the birds cleared the ground of pebbles and stones. The frogs and ducks worked on cleaning Brahmatal of the green moss. After a few days, the ground was ready to conduct the games. The birds and animals on the other part of the river were practicing hard for the games. Training was on as per their respective talents in games like wrestling, running and the long jump. Heavy rocks were being used in the practice of weight lifting. Hockey and football practice were being done with complete dedication. Time flew and the long wait finally was over. King Sher Singh inaugurated the Champak Games on the anniversary of the establishment of the jungle. Koel sang the theme song of the games in her enchanting voice. The lyrics of the song were so captivating that the entire audience gave a big round of applause. An exciting match of

football was played between the elephants and the camels. Honey Elephant made a goal in the last minute of the second half and won his team a gold medal. Jhappu Bear won in cycling, while the deer won over the reindeer in long jump. Even the long jump of small insects proved to be very interesting. The next morning, as soon as Hariyal Parrot gave the news that there would be water games in Brahmatal, all the birds flew in that direction. Mouni and Rouni Ducks won in the boat race, while nobody could beat Mahasheer Fish in swimming. The leopard easily won in the 100meter race, proving that he was the fastest animal in the jungle. In the 400-meter race, the great grandchildren of the rabbit and the tortoise participated and surprisingly, the tortoise won even this time. The rabbit fell asleep this time too on the track and woke up to see himself having lost to the tortoise. Kalu Bear established his supremacy in wrestling, while Daddu Monkey did the same in gymnastics. When Matku Elephant won in weight lifting, the audience went berserk in excitement.

The boxing ring was the place where the animals and birds couldnt decide on who could be the winner. The vulture said, Tanny Rhino will definitely beat Manny Rhino. Winning and losing are all part of game. We should just concentrate on enjoying. Hey, Tanny has come inside the ring but where is Manny? The eagle looked in all directions to see if Manny had arrived. After some time, Manny came from his tent and the fight began. Both were punching each other heavily from the first round itself, but Manny seemed more agile than usual. He hit Tanny so hard that he fell down and couldnt get up. As the bell for the last round rang, something clicked in the eagles mind. He wasnt convinced with the way Manny had won. He shared his doubts with Shera and Bhallook. When Mannys supporters were carrying him on their shoulders with garlands

around him, Shera and Bhallook were watching the CCTV camera footage of the tent. The footage showed that Manny had taken dope. Mannys doping test was conducted and showed that Manny had taken performance enhancing drug. His win was nullified as he had won using unfair means. As soon as this was revealed, the prince became furious. Not only did he take back Mannys medal, but also banned him for playing for life. As Manny was leaving, the audience rebuked him for being a cheater. After Manny reached home, he couldnt even face his family. He deeply regretted what he had done. He realised that participating in the games after taking performanceenhancing drugs was against the basic principles of the games. Determining that he would never do anything like that again, he vowed to keep up the spirit of the game.

olu Deer always kept his eyes on the racing ground. He had been fond of racing since his childhood, but unfortunately his right leg was of no use due to a problem since birth.

towards him, he didnt feel happy. Watching animals like the horse, deer and Despite his lameness, he so loved racing that when rabbit running, his deepest desire the racing ground would be empty in the evening, would surface up, but then he he would run with his three good legs. Nobody couldnt do anything. would notice in the dark of the night that somebody was running alone. But how long can one live in dejection? Everybody has a When he was very young, he had been right to happiness and disheartened with the fact that he couldnt hope. Golu had to participate in a race due to his crippled leg. find his happiness Even though everybody was sympathetic despite his disability, which he did. He targeted on not winning any racing competition but on enjoying the feeling of running. He didnt want to feel sorry for himself; he rather just wanted to run in the playground. So he would run in the ground for hours when nobody would be there. Initially he did face some problems, but then he began enjoying

running with his three legs as much as any pro athlete. Though Golu had now gained the expertise for running, he couldnt take part in any competition. However, he was fine with his life. He had been able to fulfil the expectations he had from himself to a certain extent. He was satisfied and content. A huge crowd had gathered in the ground since morning. Bholu, is some race getting held again? Golu asked his friend Bholu Deer. Golu, dont you know? Selections are on for the London Olympic. Their team has arrived in our jungle too. All the horses and deer have been practicing for months for this only! Hearing these words, Golu felt his desire of running in a competition surging up, but then he checked himself.

Nonetheless, he got worried thinking that now the ground wont be available for him to run. When will the race start? Golu asked. The race will start from tomorrow morning and it will be a day and night thing then, Bholu replied. Let me not miss this opportunity of running tonight. I dont know for how many days the ground will be occupied then, Golu was thinking. By evening the entire ground had become

PROITI ROY

empty. Like every day, Golu began his running when he felt that nobody would watch him now. He ran for a longer time than usual. Then thinking that his mother would get worried for him, he decided to go back home. Wait. He heard a voice when he was about to leave. He turned to find himself looking at a stranger. What were you doing now? Are you a contender for the race? Were you practicing? he asked. No, I am Golu. I cannot take part in the race because my right leg is crippled, Golu told everything about himself to the stranger. I run here daily because I cannot live without it. It is my passion. Do you know who I am? I am the judge of this race. Athletes selected by me only will go ahead. Why dont you participate in the race? You are very good at running, the judge said. But I have already told you about my problem. So what if one of your legs doesnt work? Still you are a good runner. We require skilled athletes like you only. You can definitely take part in Paralympics, The judge told Golu.
18

Paralympics? Yes, Paralympics is the race for those who have some physical disability. You run like a champion athlete. You will be easily able to win the Paralympics, The judge explained. But I have never participated in a race. Will I be a good enough contender in comparison to others? Golu was still hesitant. Why are you getting nervous? Your hard work, dedication and confidence are enough for you to win. You must have gone through many depressing situations since your childhood, but your enthusiasm helped you overcome all the obstacles. You kept practicing without even participating. Despite your disability, you have your dreams and the zeal to fulfil them. Then why wont you win? You are an example to others. I am confident that you will definitely win. Now I dont want to hear anything from you. Come with me, Ill write your name in the list. Hearing Judge Uncles encouraging words, Golus eyes moistened with tears. The next moment he was walking with Judge Uncle towards the sports office.

The Win of Sports Spirit

By Ashish Jain he preparations were on full throttle for the Olympic Games in Champakvan. For the past few years, the competition between the players of Champakvan and Sundarvan had been fierce. Sometimes Champakvan emerged winner and at other times, Sundarvan became the Champions. This year, the Olympic Champion cup should come to our jungle. All the players should put in their maximum effort. The players who win medals in the Olympics will be rewarded by me and the best player will receive a special award, the king of Champakvan, Sher Singh, announced the rewards to encourage his players. All the players clapped enthusiastically in response to the kings declaration. We promise you that we will try our level best to bring the Olympic Champion cup to Champakvan, said the leader of the players team of Champak van, Jacky Horse assured King Sher Singh. We are expecting this only from you, Sher Singh said. As the day of the Olympics was approaching closer, the fervour among the players was steadily escalating. The teams of Sundarvan, Chandanvan, Nandanvan and Kanchanvan had also reached Champakvan to take part in the Olympics. On the scheduled day, Olympic Games were inaugurated in a cultural ceremony. Mohini Koel sang in her enchanting voice and a group of peacocks performed the peacock dance. Both the performances were applauded by the audience. After that, King Sher Singh formally announced the commencement of the Olympic Games. All the teams marched past the audience in the beginning.

Jacky Horse was leading the march for Champak vans team by carrying the flag in his hand. The spectators clapped and encouraged their respective teams. Then began the games for which everybody had been waiting eagerly. The first day hockey matches were played. The teams of Champakvan and Sundarvan reached the finals after beating all the other teams in their groups. They played a close match which was finally won by the team of Champakvan. After that, the football match was won by Sundarvans team. On the last day of the Olympic Games, the total tally of medals for Champakvan was 15. Sundarvan too had won 15 medals. Chandanvan had won five and Nandanvan and Kanchanvan both had won one medal each. Only one competition was left on the last day, the marathon race of 25 kms. Jacky Horse was participating from Champakvan while Chini Leopard was representing Sundarvan. All the athletes had to complete an entire round of Champakvan starting from the Olympic ground. As soon as the competition judge Cheeku Rabbit blew the whistle, all the athletes began running on the Champak van highway. Many animals were standing on both sides of the road and were encouraging the athletes by clapping for them. Jacky and Chini were running almost together, while SONAL SUMIT the other athletes were left way behind. They both reached the hilly area while running. The path was very narrow over here. There was a mountain on one side and a deep chasm on the other. Big stones were also scattered on the way due to which they had to run very cautiously. Suddenly Jacky tripped on a stone and fell down, getting injured in the process. Chini saw this and, instead of helping Jacky, laughed and said, Bye, bye Jacky, now

nobody can stop me from winning. He ran ahead saying that. Jacky looked around just to find that he was all alone. Forget running, he couldnt even walk properly. Yet he began running slowly, tolerating the immense pain. Jacky had just gone a little further when he heard a sound of screaming. As he looked down into the abyss, he saw Chini hanging down, holding a rock for support. Jacky, please save me or else Ill fall down in the gorge, Chini pleaded with Jacky. But how did you fall down? Jacky asked. I tripped on a stone, Chini answered. For a moment Jacky thought that he should leave Chini and complete his marathon, but soon he realised that it was not a right thought. A banyan tree with its long and thick creepers was fortunately rooted there. Jacky cut a thick and strong creeper and let one end of it hang towards Chini, the other end being tied to the tree. Hold this and come up, friend. When Chini thanked Jacky after coming up, Jacky asked, Dont you want to complete the marathon? Both began running again. Eventually Jacky won the race. His teammates lifted him up on their shoulders while celebrating his victory. On the basis of the number of medals, Champakvan was declared the winner. Before taking the cup for the Olympic Champion, Jacky sought King Sher Singhs permission to say something. Jacky held the mic and said, The real winner of the marathon race is Chini. He deliberately ran slowly to let me win. Chini came up on the stage and narrated the entire incident to King Sher Singh. Sher Singh said, Winning and losing are part of every game, but these two have let the sports spirit win today. I announce a special award for each of them as the best player. This declaration led to a thunderous applause by all the animals.

Shortcut
By Renu Mandal onty Donkey was having peanuts sitting in a park when Jumpy Monkey passed by him. He rapped hard on Montys back and asked, Hey Donkey, how are you doing? This incensed Monty. He caught hold of Jumpys hand and took him over to Sher Singh and Cheeku Rabbit, who were standing just nearby. Sir, I have a complaint

to make. Jumpy calls me a donkey every day, Monty objected at Jumpys behaviour. But Sir, I am just calling him what he is. I cant call him a horse or an elephant! Jumpy said with an innocent face. Sher Singh and Cheeku couldnt help but laugh at the reply. Sher Singh patted Montys back and said, He has called you a donkey. You call him a monkey. Monty made a bad face and left the park. This was not a single incident that had happened with him. Even in his office all the animals made fun of him by calling

him a stupid donkey. Teju Deer and Rinku Elephant were talking to each other at the gate of the park. Teju was saying, Olympic games are going to be held in Champak Van very soon. We should start practicing from now only so that we can get selected to be in the hockey team. You are right, Teju. We will reach the Champak ground tomorrow morning itself for the practice. Once we get selected for the Olympics and if we win, then not only us but Champakvan will also get famous, Rinku nodded his head. Monty heard them and moved on towards his house. A thought struck in his mind that if he could also participate in the Olympic Games and win, his life would change forever. He would become a star overnight. Nobody would dare call him a stupid donkey. This thought transfused a new zeal and ardour in Monty. Next morning he reached the Champak ground at 6 oclock. He saw that Teju and Rinku were playing hockey there. Monty too began practicing with them, but he got tired very soon.

A week passed. Every morning Monty would come to the ground, practice hockey for some time and go back early after feeling tired. He got bored after just a few days. He was not in the habit of getting up early nor of doing hard work. He began thinking of following a shortcut way to success. Ronny Bear was the Chairman of the Selection Committee. Monty thought that if he could please Ronny, he would easily get selected to the hockey team. With this in mind, Monty bought many fruits and sweets from the market and reached Ronnys house. He gave the fruits and sweets to Ronny and said, Sir, please select me for the hockey team. I will do anything for you in return. Ronny got furious on hearing this. He said, You cannot get selected this way. It is wrong. Pinky Vixen, Ronnys secretary, whispered in his ears, Sir, we need to teach this donkey a lesson. You are right, Pinky, Ronny smiled. Monty, you will have to drop my kids to school daily from tomorrow. As you say, Sir, Monty bowed his head with respect. From next day onwards, he would drop Ronnys children to school in his car at 8 oclock in the morning. One day Ronny called him and said, Monty, my servant has taken a leave for a month. So you will do all my household chores. Dont worry, Sir. Ill do all the work.

Monty went to his office and told his boss, Sir, I want leave for a month. His boss was already irritated with him. He said, I am giving you leave forever. You are late everyday and now you want to take leave for a month! Get out of my office right now. I dont need irresponsible workers like you! Okay, I am leaving. Even I dont want to work here. Once I get the opportunity to play in the Olympics and our team wins, Ill get millions of rupees. Many big companies will also give me job offers. I dont need this job! You silly donkey! The boss muttered. Monty began doing housework for Ronny from morning till night. One day he was buying vegetables for Ronny when he met Teju. Monty, why dont you come for practice these days? Dont you want to get selected in the team? Teju asked. Oh! I will get selected without practicing. How? Monty didnt reply and walked away. After a few days game competitions were held for selections in the Olympics. Many animals were selected for that. Teju and Rinkus names were on the list of hockey team, but Montys name was nowhere to be seen. Monty got very angry and went to Ronny for an explanation. Sir, I served you day and night. I worked at your house like a

KEITH

servant, but you didnt select me even then! Ronny said, Monty, you are really stupid. The animals who were selected had worked hard for it, but you wanted to reach up by a shortcut. Monty left for home, fuming. He met Cheeku on the way back and told him everything. Cheeku said, Monty, Ronny has taught you a good lesson. Your own mistake has made a fool of you. Instead of buttering Ronny, you should have practiced hard to get selected. Working hard is the only way to success, just remember that. There is no shortcut to be successful. Monty decided that he will work hard and not follow any shortcut method to succeed ever again.

DADAJI AND OLYMPICS 3

By Vivek Chakravarty

DADAJI, WHY ARE MARATHONS 26 MILES AND 385 YARDS LONG?

RAJU, INITIALLY MARATHONS WERE 23 TO 26 MILES LONG. IN THE YEAR 1908 IN THE LONDON OLYMPICS, THE ROYAL FAMILY REQUESTED THE ORGANIZERS TO END THE MARATHON IN FRONT OF THE ROYAL BOX SO THAT THEY COULD CLOSELY WATCH THE MARATHON.

THIS MARATHON RACE WHICH HAD STARTED FROM THE WINDSOR CASTLE AND WAS GOING TO END AT THE OLYMPIC STADIUM COVERED 26 MILES AND 385 YARDS. LATER ON, THIS DISTANCE WAS MADE AS THE STANDARD DISTANCE FOR THE MARATHON RACES.

DADAJI, YOU GAVE US VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION RELATED TO THE OLYMPIC.

RIYA, THIS IS NOTHING. MORE INTERESTING INCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED DURING THE OLYMPICS.

WHAT INCIDENTS, DADAJI?

IN THE 1912 STOCKHOLM OLYMPIC GAMES, THE GREEKO ROMAN WRESTLING MATCH BETWEEN FINLANDS ALFRED ASIKAINEN AND RUSSIAS MARTIN KLEIN WENT ON FOR MORE THAN 11 HOURS.

FOR SUCH A LONG TIME! WHO HAD WON IT, DADAJI?

MARTIN KLEIN HAD WON THIS MATCH IN 11 HOURS AND 40 MINUTES, BUT HE HAD BECOME SO TIRED AFTER THIS MATCH THAT HE COULDNT PARTICIPATE IN THE FINALS AND HAD TO BE CONTENT WITH THE SILVER MEDAL.

HOW UNFORTUNATE! HE REACHED THE FINALS AFTER SUCH HARD WORK AND THEN COULDNT PLAY IN IT!

RIYA, THIS IS NOTHING. AMERICAN ATHLETE ROBERT LEGENDRE WAS EVEN MORE UNFORTUNATE. HE MADE A WORLD RECORD BUT STILL HAD TO REMAIN CONTENT WITH A BRONZE MEDAL.

ROBERT LEGENDRE TOOK A 25 FEET 4 INCH LONG JUMP IN THE 1924 PARIS OLYMPIC, BUT THIS JUMP WAS PART OF PENTATHLON COMPETITION. HE GOT THIRD POSITION AS PER HIS PERFORMANCE IN THAT COMPETITION. IN CONTRAST TO THIS, THE ATHLETE WHO HAD WON THE GOLD MEDAL IN THE LONG JUMP IN THIS VERY OLYMPIC HAD TAKEN A JUMP OF JUST 24 FEET 5 INCHES.

WHY DID THAT HAPPEN, DADAJI?

THIS IS INDEED VERY STRANGE.

DADAJI, LET US WATCH THE OLYMPIC GAMES ON TV. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WE MIGHT WITNESS SOME MORE INTERESTING INCIDENTS IN THESE OLYMPICS.

SONAL SUMIT

DADAJI AND RAJU TOO DIRECTED THEIR ATTENTION TOWARDS THE TV ON HEARING RIYAS WORDS.

The Defeat by Fear

By Surya Narayan Maurya

t was the final match of hockey for the Londonvan Olympic. It was going to be played between five-time winner Salilvan and Nirjharvan, which had reached the finals for the first time. Friends, we have been winning for the past five times in the Olympic Games. Today we will be facing a team which has reached the finals for the first time. We are definitely more experienced than they are. I dont think we should have any difficulty in beating them, the captain of Salil van, Chunky Monkey, gave a pep talk to his teammates. Though Nirjharvan was playing in the finals for the first time, they were full of confidence. Friends, we have reached the finals and that is no small feat. However, it does not mean that we shouldnt try to win the finals. The opponent team is under more pressure to win as it has been the champion for the past five times. On the other hand, we have nothing to lose, so we can play without pressure, Nirjharvans captain, Monty Rabbit, was boosting his teams morale. The match began at the scheduled

time. The entire stadium was packed. Both teams were trying hard to goal. While Salilvan was relying on its experience, Nirjharvan was counting on its enthusiasm. After some time, the players of Salilvan got the ball and they got a penalty corner by entering Nirjharvans penalty area. They converted this into a goal and got a lead of 1-0. Chunky called his teammates while they were celebrating their goal. Friends, we are ahead by one goal. Now if we tighten up our defence and not let the opponent team enter our penalty corner, the time will be over on this score itself and we will be able to win this final match, Chunky explained his strategy to them. What will we have to do? one player asked Chunky. We will put two more players in defence and just remember that we shouldnt let the other teams players enter our penalty corner, Chunky told them the plan. This strategy worked. The players of Nirjharvan couldnt enter Salilvans penalty area. This worried Monty Rabbit and he called his team members. I have noticed one thing. Salilvans defence is weak from the left side. The

SONAL SUMIT

player who is standing there is looking listless. So the next attack should be from the left side. As soon as someone gets the ball, place it on the left side. Ill be standing near the line. Pass the ball to me as I will just have to tackle only the goal keeper then, Monty chalked out a plan. All the players understood the plan and acted accordingly. The ball finally reached Monty as planned. As Monty began taking the ball towards Salilvans goal post, Chunky reached near him. Chunky panicked seeing Monty so close to making a goal. He ran quickly and impulsively pushed Monty from behind. The push was so hard that Monty couldnt keep his balance and bumped into Salilvans goal keeper and injured his head. Before Nirjharvans players could demand a penalty stroke, the bell indicating half time buzzed off. Montys face had turned red

with anger as he had reached a position to make a goal had Chunky not made him fall. He decided to directly confront Chunky about what he had done. You deliberately made me fall. Now see how I and my teammates will avenge this injury that you have given me, Monty said, pointing towards his injured head. After half time, the team of Nirjharvan completely dominated their opponents. They made five goals in succession and won the match by 5-1. When the medals were being awarded, Chunky came to speak to Monty.

You had said that you will take revenge, but you didnt hurt a single player of Salilvan. Why? he asked Monty. Monty smiled at Chunkys question. We did hurt you and took revenge as well. When I spoke of avenging you, you and all the players of Salilvan developed fear. As a result, all of you couldnt face our team. We took advantage of this and towered above you and won the match. For a simple physical injury, we injured your entire Olympic history. It will always be said in the history of Olympics that a first- time finalist crushed a five-time champion team. Could there be a better revenge? You are right, Monty. We were defeated by our own fear. I am sorry for what I did. Please forgive me, Chunky put his hand forward in a friendly gesture. Monty let bygones be bygones and hugged him. Both became close friends from then on.

The Last Win

he Olympic Games were about to begin. Chanchalvan too was participating in them for the first time. This was the reason of the excitement which had pervaded in the entire jungle. Only the selected few were participating. Those who won in the jungle were going to Londonvan to participate in the Olympics.

Hinhina Horse was participating in the race along with Cheeku Rabbit. While Kangru Kangaroo was in the long jump competition, Gajju Elephant and Kanni Cat were in volleyball and football, respectively. Sheru Singh was trying to choose the best of his athletes for the Olympics. That is why he had arranged for this test Olympics. The winner was going to play in the finals. While this process was going on, Kachhu Tortoise came there. I want to participate in the London Olympics too, Kachhu said. Kachhu, there is no game for you here. Neither can you play football nor volleyball, neither hockey nor basketball. Badminton and tennis are not for you. Then have you come here to take part in racing? Cheeku began mocking Kachhu. Cheeku, I think Kachhu must have heard the story of the tortoise and the rabbit. And has taken its ending too seriously, Gajju joined in with Cheeku to make fun of Kachhu. Dont laugh at me. I can perform better than all of you, Kachhu said with confidence.

But Kachhu, they are not wrong. In which game will you participate? Register your name in the game you want to play. The test Olympic is going to be held tomorrow. If you win, you can go ahead for the London Olympic, Sher Singh said. Kachhu enrolled his name and left. When Sher Singh saw the game in which Kachhu was going to participate, it brought a smile on his face.

Fish, Giga Frog and Magru Crocodile will showcase their swimming skills. The one who swims in the most interesting way will be declared winner. All of them jumped in the water as soon as the announcement was over. Giga was jumping to and fro while Rany was swimming inside-out. Magru too was performing similarly. While everybody was enjoying all this, something else attracted their attention. They saw that a ball was floating on the water.

The next day all the participants had gathered on the playground of Chanchalvan. All the inhabitants of the jungle were curious and excited to see the matches. Not everybody could go to Londonvan, but this seemed equally fun to watch. The race began and Hinhina Horse won it amidst a huge round of applause by the spectators. Then it was the turn of basketball match and Champi Monkey was declared the winner of it. After that, winners were chosen in football, hockey, tennis and badminton. Then a loud announcement was heard. Now, Kachhu Tortoise, Rany

Sometimes it was floating, at other times it was bouncing with the waves. At times two legs would be seen with it which were performing various antics. After a long time, everyone came to know that it was Kachhu who was entertaining everyone like that and had also finished the swimming race first. When the game was over, Kachhu was declared the winner. Yes, Kachhu had been successful in not only winning the game, but also in winning the hearts of those who had made fun of him. We shouldnt have made fun of Kachhu. He proved that the winner shows consistency. He had won with his efforts years ago and even today too, Gajju said. They all walked in the direction of Kachhu to congratulate him.

Tom Joins Hands with Jerry

R
By Shantha Nagarajan ight from the time they arrived at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse had been fighting with each other. Tom and Jerry were members of the American Animals Team coming to participate in the Sports Meet at Champakvan. The competition was between the American Team and the Champakvan Animals Team. Had I known that this Jerry fellow is also in the team, I wouldnt have given my name, muttered Tom. His worry was that Jerry, being a better player than

48

himself, might win more prizes. Ooh! I cant imagine my foe winning more prizes than I do. Ill have to prevent Jerry from playing. Tom meowed to himself. As soon as the American Team arrived at the Champakvan Airport, President Sher Khan and the other animals took them to the animals quarters. Ugh! My foe Jerry is staying in the neighbouring room! Cant they shift him to some other place? Tom grunted upon seeing Jerry in the adjoining room. Sitting inside his room, Tom began to think of ways to prevent Jerry from participating in the Meet. I wont let him play ha ha... During the night, the jealous Tom poured oil from a bottle on the floor at the entrance of Jerrys room. He then ran into his room and screamed in his cell phone, Jerry, rush at once to my room, Ive to discuss an important matter with you. Quickly! Alack! The next moment Jerry was in his room! You said its urgent, no? So I just climbed the wall and slipped into your room through the ventilator of my bathroom hee...hee... Ugh! Toms plan didnt succeed! Alas! Tom had another blow! A loud thud and a roar from outside shook him. He rushed out to see what had

happened. Ooh! There lay on the oily floor the huge figure of Sher Khan! Ooh... aah... Someone has dropped the oil here to make me slip and fall. Who is the culprit? Im going to hang him! roared Sher Khan. Sher Khan was visiting the quarters to wish the team happy stay but lo, while rushing by Jerrys room, he slipped on the oil that Tom had dropped. The guilty Tom hid himself inside his room. Oh! Jerry escaped, and Sher Khan suffered! Now hardly one day remained for the meet. Tom had thought of another plot to prevent Jerry from taking part in the games. Early in the morning, the American team gathered at the playground for practice. Tom reached the ground much earlier. He stealthily looked here and there, and then dug the ground near the winning post. After digging a pit, he filled it with sharp stones and glass pieces, and then covered it with leaves. Gee! Anyone keeping the foot here will hurt his feet so badly that he wont be able to walk for days. As soon as his team assembled there, Tom, who was the team leader, called Jerry and said, Jerry, you practice first. Let me see how much time you take to reach the post. Tom gave the whistle and Jerry sped towards the post. As he was nearing the post, Jerry impatiently made a bounce towards the post.

Sher Khan standing at the entrance! Tom was happy. Hee! Now Sher Khan is going to throw Jerry out, hell be jailed! Sher Khan beamed a smile and clapped his hands. Well done Mr. Jerry! I enjoyed your mimicry. Jerry jumped with joy, and the heartbroken Tom ran away. Urr...rr...now there is only one way left... I must kill him. Tom burst into anger.

Zoom... He landed away from the pit dug by Tom. Ugh! Lucky fellow! He has once again escaped!Alack! Tom had another blow! Bugs Bunny, another Runner, was next running towards the winning post. Ouch! Bunny lay inside the pit wounded and screaming. Oh! What a blow! My plan has failed a second time! Tom swore not to let Jerry take part in the race. In the evening, the American team was enjoying a party at the top of the building. Tom felt like crushing the jovial Jerry. He walked up and down the hall wondering what to do. Just then he saw from the top President Sher Khan coming towards the building. Tom had a flash of an idea. Standing in the middle of the crowd, Tom said, Now lets have some fun... Jerrys good at mimicking. Jerry, how about mimicking Sher Khan roar? Tom dragged Jerry to the centre. Cheered by the others, Jerry gave a loud roar and thundered just like Sher Khan, Ooo... urrr... There was loud cheer. Alas! Just then they saw

Tom decided to take Jerry to the bridge across River Champak in the morning and then push him into the river. In the night Tom went for a walk. When he passed by Sher Khans den, he heard some voices. Tomorrow our jungle team must win all the competitions. The American team must go back Empty handed without a single prize, said Sher Khan. Your Highness! We are all united and well assist each other. We wont let them defeat us. Well bring glory to our jungle state, said the animals in a chorus. Tom, who overheard this, was ashamed of himself. Oh! These players are so patriotic! For them their countrys interests are more important than their own interests. On the other hand, I am trying to defeat my own country animal! Ill forget about my enmity and work for Jerrys victory. We must bring glory to our country. The next morning Tom wished Jerry success. Both vowed to stay united during the meet and work for their teams success.

The Justice of the Queen

By Mahesh Chandra Tripathi

long time ago, on the banks of the Thames River, where the city of London is situated today, there was a jungle called London Kanan. The queen of London Kanan was a lioness, Romila. Nobody would dare to exploit or do any injustice under the reign of Romila. She was a justice-loving queen. Once, an inspector of London Kanan presented a case in her court. The inspector was a rhinoceros, Joseph. He had brought along a slender reindeer named Valentine. Inspector Joseph gave his statement, Your Honour, I saw him trespassing in Wooly Sheeps house. He ran as I called out. I too ran behind him and caught him. Now I have brought him to your court. When you called him, how far was

he from you? the queen asked. Around 50 yards, Your Honour, Joseph replied. The Queen was not convinced by Josephs answer. She got up from her throne and took both of them on the road. She said, Mr. Joseph, leave 50 yards. Ill put Valentine just one yard away from you. Catch hold of him if you can. Many animals had gathered there to see how the Queen showed justice. Valentine ran so quickly that in moments he was out of reach. On the other hand, the overweight Joseph couldnt even make 20 footfalls. He began panting and his heartbeat increased alarmingly. Valentine completed his round, came near Romila and stood with folded hands. He

was all smiles now as he had complete faith in Romilas judgment. Queen Romila reached her court again and gave her verdict after being seated on her throne. She acquitted Valentine of the false charges put on him and wrote to the police department to punish Joseph for his wrongdoing. All the animals and birds present in the court praised the righteousness of the Queen. This incident once again established the fact that Queen Romila was never wrong in her justice.

History of Olympics
In the ancient times, Olympic Games were played in a place called Olympia in Greece between 776 BC to 393 AD. They would be played as a religious festival in the honour of their deity, Olympus. The father of the contemporary Olympics has been Frances Pierre De Coubertin whose efforts initiated the games again in the city of Athens of Greece in 1896. The tradition of lighting the torch in the Olympic Games has been an old one. o A blitz glass would be used to light fire from the sunlight in Olympia which in turn would light the torch. This tradition is being O followed fo even today. This torch goes in the hands of various athletes starting sta from Olympia to the place where the Olympics are held. In the modern mo times, the tradition of lighting the torch began for the first time in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. The blue, yellow, black, red and green rings on the white flag of the Olympics represent the five continents: Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia. The reason of choosing to keep these colours in the flag is that out of these colours, one is definitely present in the flag of all the countries of the world. The Olympic flag was designed by Pierre De Coubertin in 1914, but it was used for the first time in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics in Belgium. Pierre P De Coubertin gave his contribution in the formation of Olympic Motto, Olympic O Oath and Olympic Creed. Olympic Ol Motto is a Latin phrase, Citius, Altius, Fortius which means Swifter, Higher, High Stronger. It motivates the athletes to run faster, reach higher and showcase their strength to their highest potential. According to the Olympic Creed, the most important aspect of Olympic is not to win, but to participate and try to give ones best performance. Olympic Games were held in Greece in the old times and the present Olympic Games are the modern version of the old ones. The first modern Olympic game too was held in Greece. That is why Greece is considered the originator of the Olympics and is honoured by giving it the first position in the March Past. After Greece, teams of other countries are positioned as per the alphabetical order of the language of the host country and the host country concludes the Olympic March Past.

The hosts of the Olympics are not countries, but cities. Hence they are named after the cities they are held in, rather than countries like 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2012 London Olympics.
