Beginning the new year with Confidence

September 2013 - Vol. 3, Issue 11

Howe to plan
20-22 September Founders Day Weekend 20 September First Grading Period Ends 21 September Deadline for Alumni Cruise

Fresh Start
In the early morning hours the flag rises above The Howe School and students begin a new school year. This is early September and it is already apparent that this year is much different than the previous year. Faces and expectations have changed. Mrs. Leanne DeFelice has taken a position at Lakeland Schools as the new middle school assistant principal and athletic director. She has been replaced by Mr. David Watson. Also new to Howe are four teachers: Anthony Venable, English, Leeland Shaw, science and math, Amanda Wieckert, Spanish, and Beth Baumgartner, ESL and Individualized Education. Mr. Watson was previously at The Howe School from 2008-2010 and has returned after developing an alternative school in Sturgis, Michigan. He holds two masters degrees from Western Michigan University and has held positions as a high school teacher, a high school principal, middle school principal, and superintendent in both Michigan and Ohio. He lives locally on South Twin Lake with his wife, Alice.

ABCDEducation!
New teachers at Howe
Leeland Shaw comes from Fremont, Indiana. He holds a B.S. degree from Manchester University and a M.E.S. in Environmental Science from Taylor University. He is teaching math and science in the Lower School and is working with staff on data collection. He has three daughters and enjoys baseball. Beth Baumgartner is from Lafayette, Indiana. She holds and undergraduate degree in special education from Purdue University, and her endorsement in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the University of Cincinnati. She is developing our ESL and Individualized Education Programs.

Amanda Wieckert is from Huntington, Indiana. She earned her undergraduate degree in Spanish and Linguistics from IU Bloomington and her masters from Marian College. She taught two years in the Indianapolis Public School before joining our staff to teach Spanish and World Languages.

Anthony Venable is from South Bend, Indiana and received his undergraduate degree from IUSB in English education and Theatre. He is very active in area theatre and spends as much time as possible developing his acting skills. He is teaching ninth and tenth grade English; along with speech.

Our international students will have more assistant than ever before in their integration to our American society due to the new ESL program. Students who have learning difficulties will be given an educational plan and special assistance at The Howe School. Students will have a Spanish teacher and will not have to rely solely on Rosetta Stone for their foreign language requirement. Teachers at The Howe School are writing weekly plans that identify the Indiana State Standards, there is a year-long test prep class, and teachers are reviewing data in order to help students improve their ACT and SAT test scores. The Howe School has access this year to an on-line e-library that will assist in research. The new e-library will also be helpful in providing students with periodicals and books. This is the same system many colleges and universities are using today. This has started out to be a great school year. There is a commitment to a great education, a fine core of students, and the excitement of a new school year. We all wish to make 2013-14 the best academic year yet!
