Year: Date: Year 5 Monday 27th May 2013 Curriculum Area: Time Period: Mathematics Period 1 (60 Minutes)

Specific Lesson Learning Goals Students will be able to: Measure at least 5 reflex angles using a half protractor

Students Prior Knowledge: Students are aware of the different types of angles. Students are aware of how to measure acute and obtuse angles. Preparation: Half protractors for all of the students Students Mathematics books White board and white board markers

How To Measure A Reflex Angle 1. Continue the arm of the top arm of the reflex angle in a coloured pencil 2. Put 180o into the straight line 3. Turn your book upside down 4. Measure the second angle (it will be either acute or obtuse) 5. Label the new angle in degrees 6. Add the new angle and the 180o together this is the measurement of the reflex angle

Time: Lesson Progression Gather the students at their desks and ask for quiet and attention Let the students know that we are going to be looking at how to draw a reflex angle using a half protractor Ask the students to recap how to measure acute and obtuse angles Ask the students to recap how to measure reflex angles using a full protractor Ask the students if they have any ideas on how to measure a reflex angle using a half protractor Draw a reflex angle on the white board Demonstrate how to measure the reflex angle on the white board Write a step by step guide on how to measure a reflex angle with a half protractor on the white board Ask the students to copy down the How To guide into their Mathematics books Ask the students if they have any questions about how to measure reflex angles using a half protractor Explain to the students they will need to use their How To guide to measure the reflex angles on their worksheets Ask the students if they have any questions about the worksheets Have the room monitor hand out the worksheets Have the students work quietly on their worksheets using Red Pirate voices Walk around the classroom speaking with the students about their angles and making corrections or advising where necessary Ensure that all of the students worksheets have been examined Ask the students for their attention Ask the students to glue their worksheets into their Mathematics books and then put their Mathematics books away Using the Cup, select students to recap the steps in how to measure a reflex angle using a half protractor Congratulate the students on a great lesson and prepare them for the start of the next lesson Informal Assessment of Student Outcomes

What will you assess? Measure at least 5 reflex angles using a half protractor How will you assess? What evidence will you collect? I will be checking the worksheets of the students as they are working I will be looking to see which students have measured at least 5 reflex angle accurately I will make note of students who are having difficulties in measure reflex angles using a half protractor
