CHAPTER 1

Topic: Challenges of middle aged diabetic adults. Aims: How does diabetes affects individuals? Is diabetes hereditary? What measures can be taken to reduce the level of diabetes?

Rationale The researcher chose this topic to highlight the effects and preventative measures of diabetes in the central region of Spanish town. The researcher has been to Spanish Town Health Centre and see how they are suffering. I tried to seek preventive methods, to lessen the rate of this disease.

CHAPTER 3 Methodology This study took the form of a mixed method approach. This means both quantitative and qualitative data were retrieved. Data Collection Instruments Questionnaire was used to collect data because; 1. It is inexpensive 2. Guarantees anonymity 3. Reaches a large number of persons 4. Allows for easy collection of data.

Sample / participants

There were twenty (20) persons selected in the community between the age range of fortyfive (45) to seventy (70). There was a percentage of 20 % which were females and the other 80% for males; however the participants were selected randomly.

Procedure

Having prepared the data collection instruments and selected the sample the following procedures were done:

a. The questionnaires were administered, to a selected sample. b. After the collection of the questionnaires, I placed them in a bag. They were shaken vigorously and I randomly selected twenty (20). c. Data was collected. d. Data was analysed and represented as graphs, charts and tables. e. Then the discussion was done.

Chapter 5 Analysis of Data

The findings of the fig 1 was calculated and percentage accurately. It was seen that diabetes mostly affects people forty five and above, the information collected was twenty per cent was between the ages of 45-55 years, ten per cent at 55-65 years , thirty per cent was 65-75 years and forty per cent at 75-5 years. However since older people lose their taste at this stage, some would want to prepare food or drink with an increase in sugar was will higher their glucose level. Fig 2 shows the symptoms mostly experienced by diabetics, which, three major symptoms were noticed, ten per cent said fatigue, twenty per cent said weight loss and seventy per cent said hunger, therefore hunger was seen at the highest because diabetics should eat regular and some eat two times three times daily but not enough to balance their sugar level. Fig 3 shows the types of diabetes which type 2 was at seventy per cent while type 1 at thirty per cent, reason for this is because, type 2 diabetes is the leading cause of death and this can lead to serious problems. Fig 4 shows the response of participants who are ashamed of having diabetes, which eighty per cent said no and twenty per cent said yes they were ashamed, having diabetes is life threatening but can be treated, and if the patient takes medications and instructed. Fig 5 shows the time at which the patient was diagnosed with diabetes, which twenty per cent said a month ago, thirty per cent said 5 months ago, forty per cent a year ago and ten per cent said ten months ago. Even though diabetes can be treated when persons found out it was shocking for them. However participants who were diagnosed with it ten months ago feel no different than before. Fig 6 shows the response of those whose family members were diagnosed with diabetes, which eighty per cent said yes and twenty per cent said no.

Fig 7 shows the respondents who say diabetes change their life, sixty per cent said yes and forty per cent said no.

Recommendation The case of diabetes in middle aged adults and older adults in my community has become known, and there has been an increase. To lessen this problem, the following situation should be carried out: Have the healthcare providers come in the community to investigate, jot down and give possible solutions. Educate members on importance of having a balanced diet. Have free medications given out for those who cant afford it. Prepare educative flyers on diabetes to be distributed in community.
