Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Turkey

to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south and Israel to the southwest

Syria has been embroiled in civil war in the wake of uprisings (considered an extension of the Arab Spring) against Assad government. Conflict is between forces loyal to the Ba'ath government and those seeking to oust it. The conflict began on 15 March 2011, with popular demonstrations that grew nationwide by April 2011. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, whose family has held the presidency in Syria since 1971, as well as the end of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party rule since 1964. After months of military sieges, the protests evolved into an armed rebellion. The conflict is asymmetrical, with clashes taking place in many towns and cities across the country. Growing influence of the Islamist group Jabhat al-Nusra within the opposition forces, and in 2013 Hezbollah entered the war in support of the Syrian army. The regime is further upheld by support from Russia and Iran, while Qatar, Saudi Arabia transfer weapons to the rebels. By summer 2013 the government's offensive had slowed in the country's north, while gained in the south. The second narrative raises the specter of the spread of radical Sunni political Islam in the MENA region, asserting that the support of regional and international states for the Syrian opposition is fueling this trend. The third narrative alleges a Western propaganda campaign against the al-Assad regime. In the summer of 2011, various local resistance groups and neighborhood militias came together under the umbrella of the newly-formed Free Syrian Army (FSA). Asad distinguished himself from other Arab potentates by his youth, but also by his consistent foreign policy directed against the US and Israel, while promoting Syrias association with the so-called resistance front that comprises Iran, the Lebanese Hizbollah, and the Palestinian Hamas
