    Back in mid-May, Regina Mayor Michael Fougere held the Mayor’s Housing Summit and promised to address our affordable housing crisis. However, unlike nearby cities like Saskatoon, Edmonton, and Calgary, who have all adopted 10 year plans to end homelessness, Regina has yet to even announce plans to develop one. We are also the only city to have adopted a definition of affordable rental housing that defines it as "housing with rents at or below average market rent"; the other cities listed have all adopted a version of the one used by StatsCan, CMHC, & SaskHousing that defines affordable housing as spending less than 30% “of total household income on shelter expenses.” “Sadly, lost in the Mayor and City Hall’s singular focus on winning the P3 wastewater treatment plant referendum, are those for whom potable water, food, and safe lodging are but a dream and sought after commodity, rather than a taken for granted given.” said Spooner. Roof-Ready Regina Re-visited is calling for Regina City Council to adopt CMHC’s definition of affordable rental housing, and to create a 10 year plan to end homelessness that includes yearly defined outcomes; for instance, the creation of 500 truly affordable (geared to low income) units in the first two years of the plan through the development of partnerships among municipal, provincial, and federal governments, as well as other key sector and community stakeholders.
