SPARK PROGRAM
COUNSELOR: Mr. Angel Colon TEL: 212 312 4800 x. 2733 EMAIL: spark273@gmail.com

Dear Stuyvesant Students,

SPARK is an additional counseling service program where you can help others and meet in a warm, friendly, confidential atmos-
phere to talk about any issues and/or concerns that they (and/or you) may have.

Here at Stuyvesant High School, SPARK has many missions which we aim to reach by dividing SPARK into two components.
The first component is making SPARK a place where any student, who is having a problem at home or is feeling socially and/or aca-
demically isolated can be helped. We understand the competitive nature at Stuyvesant and know how stressful it can be. We’re here for
you every day for anybody to drop by and talk to a Peer Counselor about anything they wish.

The second component of SPARK (and also a major goal) is getting involved! You are encouraged to join SPARK to help out fel-
low students by suggesting solutions to their problems/concerns. We also attempt to raise awareness about common teen issues, such as
adolescent transitions, peer pressure, stress factors, substance use, and family problems to name a few.

As a member of SPARK, you will learn peer counseling and coping skills through our small dynamic group discussions/trainings.
In addition, we present and act out scenarios that help promote individual and group counseling skills. Through this educational train-
ing, you will qualify to become a Peer Helper as a Freshman and Sophomore and a Peer Leader starting in your Junior year.

At SPARK, we give emphasis to our Substance Abuse Education Awareness curriculum – a Prevention/Intervention model. Stu-
dents are educated about various drugs ranging from tobacco and alcohol to methamphetamine use and the consequences of taking
them. In addition, we conduct classroom presentations and do awareness outreach projects in hopes of bettering our communities.

If you are interested in getting involved in SPARK, then please visit our office (Room 273B) located at the end of the second floor
atrium. We look forward to meeting you. “Confidentiality is honored and respected!”

Sincerely,

TÇzxÄ VÉÄÉÇ

THE ESSAY CONTEST AND SCHOLARSHIP FOR SENIORS

The Parents’ Association is awarding five $1,000 scholarships for the best essays written by seniors and submitted to the PA
Scholarship Committee.

Write an approximately 500-word essay, formatted in MS Word, and email it by the deadline, Saturday, April 15th at 12 Mid-
night, to Larrysit@yahoo.com. At the top of the essay, the writer should write his or her name and official class. This infor-
mation will be removed before the essays are sent to the Scholarship Committee members for grade.

Essay Question:

“If Stuyvesant had been an alternate universe where all of your friends were your teachers and all of your teachers your
friends, what might you have learned that you didn’t?”

The essays will be judged on content and creativity. The members of the Scholarship Committee are Stuyvesant parents, not
your teachers. We are looking for unique insights.

All essays will be kept confidential and read only by the Scholarship Committee members, who will not know the authors’ names. Win-
ners will be announced at the Stuyvesant High School Awards Night in June 2006. If the PA wishes to publish any of the essays, we will
ask the authors for permission.
Any questions? Call Larry Sit, chair of the Scholarship Committee, at Home 718-898-8459 (evenings and weekends) or at work: 718-
707-7779, or email Larrysit@yahoo.com.
