Waste disposal facility to receive financing Ukraine's government has approved an plan to prevent an emergency at Landfill 5 located at Pidgirtsi

The document was drafted and filed by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resour ces of Ukraine.The plan provides allocation to the Kyiv City Administration of 47 million UAH for building dams, as well as for expanding a leachate processing f acility.The funds will be allocated from the cash balance of the State Environmen tal Fund. Landfill 5 is operated by JSC "Kyivspetstrans" (51% owned by the Kyiv City Counc il) is Kyiv's main solid waste disposal facility located 15 kilometers from the capital. In operation since 1986, the landfill is located on 63.7 hectares and a has total capacity of 45 million cubic meters. The land where the landfill is l ocated was provided to PJSC "Kyivspetstrans" by the Council of Ministers of Ukra ine. Historically, leachate accumulation in large quantities is one of the major prob lems at the landfill.It is generated by the landfill operation. It is dangerous f or the environment, and may initiate an emergency. Kyiv officials are looking for a comprehensive solution for disposal of solid wa ste, including new sorting lines, new containers for separate waste collection, and new waste treatment facilities.The enhanced approach allows for reducing the volume of disposed waste by 50%, cutting the landfill load.This also helps manage the leachate problem. The adoption of the decree helps reduce the risk of an emergency on the Municipa l Solid Waste Landfill 5 at Pidgirtsi, which could damage Kyiv's surrounding env ironment.
