Metals & Alloys

Direct spectrometer techniques give very fast and accurate results provided standard samples are available in substantial quantities. Spectro Labs was the first lab to introduce direct Spectrometer (OES) techniques for metal analysis. It has the largest capability in the country to analyze any Metal- ferrous, non-ferrous or precious metals.Spectro has the largest range of certified reference materials (CRM) to cover the entire range of metals. Metals not possible to analyze by direct optical emission spectrometer are analyzed by XRF or by ICP Spectrometer. The XRF spectrometer has the capability to analyze elements from sodium to uranium in the periodic table, While the ICP can analyze many other elements not possible by above techniques. All precious and rare metals are now possible to be analyzed by these techniques. Hazardous elements and restricted substances like Pb, Cd, Hg and total Cr can also be analyzed in plastics and rubbers.

Role Of Thermal Technique In Polymer Studies

A complete thermal analysis system comprises different techniques. Each technique characterizes the sample in a particular way. The combination of all the results simplifies interpretation. TGA measures the weight curve, DSC the heat flow. All these measurement quantities change as a function of temperature or time.TGA is a technique that measures the change in weight of a sample as it is heated, cooled or held at constant temperature. Its main use is to characterize material with regard to their composition. Application areas include plastics, elastomers and thermosets, mineral compounds and ceramics as well as wide range of analyses in the chemical and the pharmaceutical testing. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is the most frequently used thermal analysis technique.DSC measures enthalpy changes in samples due to changes in their physical andchemical properties as a function of temperature or time.

Exremely Wide Application Range:

Thermogravimetry provides quantitative information on the composition and thermal stability of many different types of materials. The method is fast and can even be used with very small samples. Control in numerous fields such as plastic, building material as plastic, building material minerals, pharmaceuticals and Foodstuffs. Thermogravimetry provides quantitative information on the composition and thermal stability of many different types of materials. The method is fast and can even be used with very small samples. The DSC signal can also be quantitatively evaluated, allowing transition and reaction enthalpies to bedetermined. The TGA/DSC is an exceptionally versatile tool for the characterization tool for the physical & chemical material properties under precisely controlled atmospheric conditions. it yields valuable information for research, development and quality.

Rubber analysis of SBR:

In rubber analysis, the sample is first heated to 600C under inert condition. The volatile components (plasticizers, often oils) vaporize and pyrolysis of the polymer being shortly afterward of about 400C at 600C, the atmosphere is then switched from inert to oxidative, resulting in the combustion of the carbon black additive. Inorganic components remain behind as a residue.

Identification of plastics:
Plastics can be identified by measuring their glass transition temperatures and melting temperatures. The figure shows the melting peaks of different polymers. The peaks clearly differ in size and their position on the temperature axis. The example of PP and POM shows that identification depends both on the melting temperature and on the enthalpy of fusion. If the type of polymer is known, the degree of crystallinity can be determined from the melting peak.

Environment & Endurance Testing

SPECTRO offer a variety of shock and vibration testing services for testing a wide range of products across many industries. Automotive components are tested to simulate the effect of road condition. Other components may be exposed to vibration during transportation until they reach their final destination. Aerospace/Defense products are also exposed to vibration conditions thus requiring vibration testing to ensure product quality and safety. The Environmental Simulation Department performs a variety of tests designed to simulate the effects of various environmental conditions on components and finished products. Some of the more common environments simulated in our chambers include, salt fog (ASTM B117), ultra-violet (UV, QUV), cyclic corrosion (GM 9540P), and CASS (ASTM B368) testing. We can also perform temperature and humidity cycling in chambers that range from 2 cubic feet. We specialize in evaluating products that are exposed to these environments before, during, and after exposure. This can include operating components in complete power up mode during the exposure cycle and acquiring real time data using our 8 channel data acquisition system.
Capabilities and Testing Process:

Humidity / Temp. Cycle Test:

Environmental temperature testing will expose the unit under test to constant high or low temperatures or cycle temperature during testing. Humidity testing can be added concurrently to a temperature test.

Vibration & Shock Testing: Vibration and shock testing is an important part of product performance and evaluation. Vibration and shock testing may be used to evaluate products and packaging for their predicted and to determine influence of packaging techniques and modes of transportation.
Specification:

The purpose of the Bump test is to verify the product's ability to withstand repeated force stress during transportation.

DropTest:

The purpose of the drop test is to simulate two situations: one is improper handling of packages during shipping and transportation, and the other is accidental dropping of unpackaged hand held products.
Specification: mASTM D 775-80

Dust creates a harsh environment for chassis, underhood, and exterior mounted devices; and can be a long term problem in interior locations (such as under the dash and seats in automobiles). Exposure to fine dust causes problems with moving parts, forms conductive bridges and acts as an absorbent material for the collection of water vapor. Some electromechanical components may be able to tolerate fine dust, but larger particles affect or totally inhibit mechanical action.

RoHS
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) EU Directive 2002/95/EC New European RoHS directives now severely restrict the presence of Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr6+, PBB & PBDE (Br) in all electrotechnical products. In the electronics industry this is the driving force behind Lead-free (Pb-Free) manufacturing.

Failure Analysis

Failure analysis is the process of collecting and analyzing all the data to identify the cause of a failure and how to prevent it from recurring. It is an important discipline in many industries, such as the electronics industry, petrochemicals industry where it is a vital tool used in the development of new methods & products and for the improvement of existing methods & products. The main principle of failure analysis is a forensic inquiry into the method or product upon the failure. Such inquiry can be conducted using scientific analytical methods such as Mechanical, Non-Destructive and Electrical Testing measurements, or through speculative approach when the data is not available but an action has to be taken. Failure Analysis and prevention are important functions to all of the engineering disciplines. The materials engineer often plays an important role in the analysis of failures, whether failure occurs during manufacturing or production processing or component/product fails in service. Features of root cause failure analysis capabilities include: ~Evaluation of field failures ~Evaluation of Life Cycle Test Failure ~Identification of Failure mode ~Contamination Analysis ~Corrosion and Environmental effects ~Photographic Documentation ~Broad Failure Analysis experience Fracture Evaluations ~Identification of product defects Spectros Failure Analysis reports provide a clear picture of the root cause, and include recommendations to avoid future failures - from component design, through material selection and processing. Over the last few years many such types of evaluations have been performed.
