The European Union is ready to send a European electoral observer team to Fiji during the 2014 elections if invited. EUs Head of Delegation to Fiji, Andrew Jacobs has confirmed the EU will provide their support upon an invite from the Fijian Government. We would be very pleased if invited as Fiji is on the right path for the 2014 elections. The electoral process is well underway and we are happy with how things have progressed, he said. We are all looking forward to elections next year. There are no sanctions on Fiji, but since 2007 the EU had placed special measures on Fiji, he said.
From the special measures, the EU had not been able to channel funds for development directly to the Government of Fiji. We have been able to support assistance through non-governmental organisations. The EU has funded FRIEND Fiji to help the agriculture industry with a grant of EUR$2.8 million (FJD$6.4 million) under the Social Mitigation Programme providing assistance to farmers. Through Habitat for Humanity Fiji (HFHF) the EU has provided housing for farmers in the sugar belt areas. Mr Jacobs says after the election, the EU will assess the result and is hopeful to lift the special measures on Fiji.
MANY residents of Suva and Nasinu by now will have noticed the iconic black London taxis in operation. The service is proving to be very popular, particularly among wheelchair-bound passengers as the taxis are equipped with ramps to provide them easy access. "I did some homework and found out from various organisations that there are 6200 people in wheelchairs in Fiji," Tauz Khan, owner of the taxis, told this newspaper. He said the service regularly received calls from hospitals to transport discharged wheelchair-bound patients. The taxis are also being utilised by wheelchair-bound tourists from cruise liners visiting Suva. "Since we got the cars the Ports
Authority calls us to send four to six cars, so we are also covering the tourism side," said Mr Khan, who first saw the cabs on a visit to London last year. But the taxis are not just beneficial to wheelchair-bound passengers. "Families also call for London taxis, because five passengers can travel in them," Mr Khan said. He assured that the taxis, which until recently rode on the streets of London in England, operated on the same fares as regular Fiji taxis. LTA media liaison officer Iliesa Sokia said the authority applauded the initiative taken by the London taxis, and added that they were looking at other modes of transport to accommodate wheelchair-bound passengers.
PRIME Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama told the people of Nadogo that there was no room for racism in Fiji. Responding to a concern raised during a talanoa session regarding the unfairness of scholarship awards based on race preference, Commodore Bainimarama said this was not true and that students should perform to get scholarships. Speaking in the iTaukei language, Commodore Bainimarama said he had also received concerns from iTaukei groups regarding the involvement of the Attorney-General Aiyaz SaiyedKhaiyum as a way of impeding iTaukei development. "Those with these sorts of racist ideas should stop because it will just hinder
our attempts to better our nation," he said. "In fact the new Constitution strives to mend all ethnic differences in an attempt to unite us as one people. "We should refrain from relying on such racist ideas and remarks as it will only affect our attempts to grow as a multicultural country." Commodore Bainimarama said academic success was based on the performance of every individual. Speaking to iTaukei parents, he encouraged them to strive for academic enlightenment and the success of their children. "If your child is getting his or her marks in the range of 300, encourage them to exceed the 300 mark and go for 380," he said.
The Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, and his team completed their northern tour after opening five telecentres in various schools. As part of their tour, the AttorneyGeneral Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum joined the Prime Minister in distributing Fijis new Constitution. Our constitution that passed into law at the weekend states that our young people are entitled to primary, secondary and tertiary education, Commodore Bainimarama said. He told the students it was important to read the 2013 Constitution because it was the blueprint for Fijis future. Ive brought with me copies to distribute here today in English, iTaukei and Hindi. Speaking further on the education provision he said: Its an ambitious clause but I dont want any smart child in Fiji to be held back because his or her parents cant afford a better education.
The Prime Minister said they were currently reviewing the education funding programmes to provide a helping hand to those Fijians who most need it. We all know that its happened in the past and unfortunately it still happens now, but Fiji can never be judged to be a fair country, let alone a smart country, if even one child is left behind. We want to empower you by giving you things you need to improve your lives and those of your families and that includes a whole range of basic rights laid out in the new Constitution, the Prime Minister said. A future in which every Fijian finally gets an equal opportunity to get on in life and also the basis on which we will hold the first genuinely democratic elections in our history next year. He further urged the students who were turning 18 before the elections to register and have their say in the future of Fiji.

Avinesh and Rajeshni during their engagement at Hilton Resort Sweet smell of frangipanis, screeching sand between toes and the soft sound of lapping waves breaking ashore. This was the order of the day when Avinesh Goundar and Rajeshni Goundar exchanged rings to tie the knot for-ever in an extra ordinary way. The young Indian couple got engaged in a Fijian traditional ceremony by Pastor Eremasi Rova at the Fiji Beach Resort & Spa managed by Hilton on Denarau Island. Surrounding the couple were friends, family and loved ones who shared happiness and witnessed such a ceremony for the rst time. For the couple Avinesh and Rajeshni who got introduced by their families in June last year, the feeling of getting engaged in a traditional Fijian ceremony was overwhelming. When I visited her in California during my vacation, on February 14 this year (Valentines Day), we were ying to Las Vegas and I proposed to her in air, she was absolutely amazed with my proposal style and said yes. To our excitement, the pilot announced it on board and everyone cheered for our union, Avinesh Goundar said. Before I ew back to Fiji in March we made plans to get married and decided to do something different and this is when we planned to get engaged in the Fijian style on the beach at the Hilton Resort and later performed the traditional South Indian wedding on Sunday, July 14 in Raviravi, Ba at her parents place, Mr Goundar added. Rajeshni has been living in California, USA for the past 13-years and is in a nance team in an IT rm while Mr Goundar is an ex Housekeeping manager at Hilton Fiji. Originally from Navoci, Nadi, Avinesh has now joined his wife in California. Mr Goundar said they have plans to settle in US but are also thinking of returning to Fiji where they would like to start up some business and retire on the beautiful lands of Fiji in future.
THE Lautoka City Council will keep a close eye on its properties now that CCTV cameras have been installed. Special administrator Praveen Bala said the installation of cameras within the central business district area of the Sugar City would enable the council to also monitor traffic offences. "Everything is monitored on the cameras including properties that the council owns," he said. "Apart from the traffic offences, we can also look at all the other illegal activity that is going on in the CBD area. "This includes the stealing or
vandalising of council property." Launched last Thursday, he said the $45,000 cameras had made their work a lot easier. "Aside from our council officials on the ground monitoring work, the cameras have become another set of eyes for us. "At the moment the cameras are only installed in the CBD area and not outside of the city boundaries," Mr Bala said. He added monitoring would also be done by the Lautoka Police Station. While launching the five closed circuit TV cameras, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said the focus was on keeping citizens and businesses safe.
THE FMF Group became the first exhibitor to sign on for the Trade Pasifika 2014 event. And according to FMF Group export manager Jason Chandra, they were honoured to join the expo, which provided a platform to showcase the best of the Pacific. "We have invested a great deal of time and resources to establish a superior brand image in our export market," he said. Organised by the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO), the trade expo would focus on agriculture, aquaculture and tourism. PIPSO CEO Mereia Volavola said the trade expo would allow about 100 businesses and companies from around
the Pacific to showcase their products, enhance trade within the region and create long lasting relationships. "The opportunity the Pacific has to develop niche markets for quality and unique products to help build economic resilience is profound. We will not only be having exhibitors from across the Pacific but we will also be inviting buyers from all international countries." She said the FMF Group supplied to markets in 20 countries and was an example of a company that had successfully tapped into the potential of the huge regional market. The Trade Pasifika 2014 expo will be held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva from April 2-4.
ENTRIES for the Fiji Development Bank small business awards are not restricted only to FDB's clients, says customer relations and business development manager Sylvia Low. Ms Low said the invitation to submit entries for the awards was also extended to non-clients. "This means that even if you are not a client of FDB you are welcome to enter," Ms Low said.
She said entries were usually returned to the respective branches, posted or emailed closer to the close of entries. As the years progress, she said they now had introduced new awards. "We expanded the agriculture, professional and business services as well as the wholesale and retail categories. "We have also included the Best Risk Management and the Small Business Award category to the jury prizes."

FROM humble beginnings as a tailor to owning multiple residential and commercial properties, Chanan Singh is the proud owner of the soon-tobe-completed President Plaza in Samabula. The three-storey property, worth more than $4.5million according to his son Pramendra Singh, was the site for the iconic landmark, Ajanta Theatre. Mr Singh said the construction business was a hobby that soon grew into a passion. His company, DC Singh's Investment Limited, built President Towers along Ratu Sukuna Rd and Knollys Apartments, the latter was sold to Yatu Lau Company Limited. "We bought this whole land for more than $1m and invested about $2m. The market value is about $4.5m," said his son, Pramendra, who is also a company director. "This adds more investment in Fiji and government would love us to invest in Fiji so why not. Why spend it elsewhere when you can do it in our own country and give people more opportunities. "There are 36 outlets and people have started inquiring about rent but we haven't signed anyone yet.
"Construction started about a year ago and we hope to complete construction in the next two weeks." He said rent prices ranged from $600 to $1800, adding the project included 50 car park spaces, 24-hour security and employment opportunities for locals. "We believe in the economy. It has been stable and has never gone down. Fiji is a place that people would love to invest. We're a friendly nation and there's a small market for business here." At the recent Fiji Economic Update, Reserve Bank of Fiji governor Barry Whiteside said the improved consumer confidence had translated well to business and investor confidence. He said investment was forecast to be about 28 per cent of gross domestic product this year, compared to an estimated 18 per cent for GDP last year, and above the government target of 25 per cent. "Recently, significant new investments have been noted in the aviation, tourism, mining and financial services sectors while government has embarked on massive public infrastructure projects in roads, ports and bridges," Mr Whiteside said.
THE Fiji National Provident Fund has collected $3million from defaulting employers during the amnesty period for the waiver of surcharges this year. The fund had extended the amnesty period twice in the midyear and employers were given until July 31 to pay their workers outstanding FNPF contributions. FNPF CEO Aisake Taito told the newspaper the fund collected $3m after the July deadline. "All employers who have outstanding contributions as of August 2013 will be subjected to the penalties stipulated
under the FNPF 2011 Decree," he said. Under section 40 of the decree, defaulting employers would be surcharged $100 per month per workers which was in addition to contributions owed. As such, he said, a company with 100 workers with unpaid contributions would be surcharged $10,000 per month until the contributions were cleared. Mr Taito said about 480 employers would be taken to task for not complying with the requirement to settle their dues before the amnesty
THE Fiji Labour Party will ensure that adequate relief is provided to low income earners and the poor if it wins the next elections and comes into power. It will do this by extending the list of basic food and consumer items that are zero-rated under Value Added Tax, in view of the cost of living. After the party's annual delegates conference in Lautoka last month, the party came up with some resolutions or a mini-manifesto as part of its policy platform for the general elections. The FLP also said providing old age pension above 65 years who had no source of income had been a cornerstone of the party's policy on social justice and equity since its inception. "But both in 1987 and 1999, we were forcefully removed from office before
we could implement our social reform programs," the FLP mini-manifesto said. "FLP believes that our senior citizens should be able to live the twilight years of their lives in dignity and some degree of independence on a rate of pension that should be adequate to ensure this." The party said it would also review all hidden (indirect) taxes, particularly for services where a 15 per cent VAT was already being charged. On rural development, FLP said it would encourage and promote commercial agriculture as a means of providing jobs and to enhance rural incomes and improve the quality of life in rural communities. "A FLP government will invest heavily in commercial agricultural development," said the party's minimanifesto.
deadline. "We encourage all FNPF members to contact the fund for an update of payments made into their account to ensure it is up to date. "We also encourage employers to ensure all contributions are up-todate," he said. Under the terms of the amnesty, the fund said defaulting employers would need to clear all contributions owed to
their workers. Employers would not be required to pay penalties for the late payment of contributions, which was known as surcharge, during the amnesty period. "This penalty is charged at 2 per cent of the total owed as stipulated in the old FNPF Act. So any employer, who fails to pay FNPF these contributions every month, as prescribed, is surcharged," Mr Taito said.

TWENTY-NINE schools were among those that contributed to Project Cover Up 2, which gave about $16,000 worth of bed linens to the CWM Hospital's pediatric unit. Losalini Tuwere, a volunteer with Friends of the CWM Hospital which organised the project, said the community had an obligation to help make hospital services more comfortable. Last year, Project Cover Up gave three sets of linen per bed, and Ms Tuwere said this year they wanted to include children from the Suva-Nausori corridor to raise awareness of the need
to support the hospital. "We've been very blessed with the response and enthusiasm from the schools," Ms Tuwere said. "We really appreciate what the principals, teachers and students have done toward this project." Hospital general manager Soro Toutou was grateful. "This donation is overwhelming. I'm very grateful to the group for organising such assistance. This is the way CWMH should move forward because the government alone cannot afford hospital services," he said.

The Fiji Elections Office has gained experience that will enhance its preparations for 2014s parliamentary elections during a five-day long mission to Canberra this past week to observe Australias federal election. There are a number of lessons that well take back to Fiji with us, on such things as best practices for the setup and management of polling stations. It was also valuable to see the manner in which Australias Voter Education programme is conducted, said the Acting Permanent Secretary Responsible for Elections, Mohammed Saneem. Mr Saneem said that his team also had the opportunity to network with
electoral administrators from other countries, and other international organisations like the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). He has thanked his Australian counterparts at the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) for their invitation to participate in the Election Visitor Programme. The programme included briefings on the Australian electoral system and the structure of the AEC, as well as providing the opportunity to observe pre-polling, polling, the scrutiny of votes, counting after the close of polling and the election night virtual tally.
Two more telecasters were declared open in the Northern Division by the Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. One at Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa Secondary School and the other at Nadogo Central College. Commodore Bainimarama said this service would provide faster communication and information resources to the less privileged areas. It is important for my government to do the work that other government leaders have not done, especially in rural areas, Commodore Bainimarama said. It will be an advantage for the students and also to the people living around the area to get access to the internet. It is providing them with knowledge and skills and has given them one of the modern technologies since they are in a rural area. We are doing a lot of work in the North and we are proud to see that people in
the North are using both languages which are iTaukei and Hindi. Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa Secondary School principal Mohammad Gani expressed his gratitude to the Government for providing such services for the students and communities near the school. The principal of Nadogo Central College, Sanjay Prasad, thanked the Prime Minister for the help to the school and to the community. It makes a new era and gives accessibility to the students as it is a boarding school, Mr Prasad said. He also thanked the Government and the Prime Ministers office for their assistance and contribution to the school. A double-storey school building was built recently and water tanks were also received because water is scarce in the area. On Monday, the Prime Minister also opened a telecenter at Seaqaqa.

With Fijis new Constitution now effective, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) says it will support government in all ways possible to ensure there are free and fair elections in 2014. RFMF spokesperson and Land Force Commander, Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga told the reporter that the military knows its role and will always stand behind the government of the day. We have an important role to play in ensuring there is peace and security in the country in the lead up to the elections and during the actual voting process, said Tikoitoga. Our role is clearly specified in the Constitution and the RFMF will remain apolitical and will work closely with Police and relevant authorities to
ensure things flow smoothly. He has also urged our neighbouring countries to stop targeting the military and making false allegations against its officers. I want to again make it very clear that we are not in any way working with our neighbouring countries and allegations of spying which surfaced recently are totally baseless and carry no substance. They should stop making such accusations because our soldiers are not even allowed to travel to their countries so how can we be closely working with them and carrying out operations. All the claims are false and we stand loyal and committed to serving our nation with full honour and dignity, he added.
More than 100 participants from around the world have gathered at the 15th Commonwealth Veterinary Association Regional Conference in Nadi to discuss ways of sustaining animal health production and care. While speaking at the opening of the conference, His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said producing and sustaining Fijis production is a challenge due to the growing requirements for stringent food safety standards, disease control, animal welfare and the need for veterinarians. The head of state pointed out that the low presence animal specialists against the increased consumption of livestock products have led to gaps that need to be filled. The consumption and imports of livestock products from dairy products like powdered milk, ice cream, cheese and yoghurt, to meats, leather and fibre are increasing steadily right across the region, Ratu Epeli said. Fiji imported $68million worth of dairy products in 2012 while animal and meat products imports reached $57m. The major challenge is to produce more of these requirements locally while providing economic opportunities, greater self-reliance and an enhanced food security in the process. The President highlighted that the Fijian government is ensuring greater
cohesion and effective implementation of the import substitution program to increase self-reliance and reduce imports. Government has been injecting around $4m-$5m annually to the livestock sector, in terms of improving livestock research and breeding, upgrading of veterinary pathology laboratory, dairy industry support through the demand driven approach program, livestock rehabilitation program and agriculture development programs. Government has also allocated $1m this year for the dairy development program to assist farmers through subsidizing agro-input costs. Ratu Epeli added that livestock are an integral part of the Pacific islandssocio and cultural systems and feature prominently in many traditional ceremonies. He also highlighted that livestock face major risk due to climate change and steps are being taken to ensure sustainability. He stressed to participants that more effective disease surveillance systems need to be in place to be able to detect and respond to any new disease incursions from changing environment conditions. The theme for the week-long conference is Sustainable Animal Health Production- the role of veterinary education, disease control, food safety, food security and animal welfare.

The Attorney-General and Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, says those who continue to object the 2013 Constitution, are trying to hinder the efforts of preparing the country for the 2014 general elections. Speaking on FBC TV, he said: The Bainimarama government does not engage in this he said this, I said that tatter-tale type of approach. We take a national approach to issues. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the way forward for politicians, was to ensure that they maintained their standards of engagement at all levels. His Excellency our President
highlighted in his address on September 6, that the way forward for politicians are that they need to have proper code of conduct, proper standards and they need to be decent about these things. Politics does not mean that you engage in some name calling and to sort of bringing yourself to the gutter level. There needs to be some sort of a certain level of propriety. There needs to some certain level of decency. But more importantly there needs to be a certain level of honesty. The Attorney-General said Government would continue with its roadmap to take the country back to democracy.

"We are also happy that those films entered into the Kula Festival Awards will be shown during the Fiji Film Festival in all FNU centres." Inter Island Airways (Fiji) Limited has said it is looking to finalise the terminal space agreements with the Airports Fiji Limited later this month. This has been confirmed by the chief executive and president of this Las Vegas-based Aviana Airways-managed airline, Barney Sene. The soon-to-be new domestic air service providers will do this after completing their site reviews and then move forward with their improvements in October. Mr Sene said Airports Fiji had provided them with the scope of work, location of counter space and detailed costs earlier on. We have reviewed the counter spaces and office space at Nadi Airport which my team and I inspected two weeks ago, he said. We are working to finalise our reviews of the other airport locations plus additional land/facilities we plan to lease at both Nadi and Nausori. Ten more homes were opened in the Nadi district as rehabilitation works continue in the western division after Hurricane Evan. Villagers and individuals whose homes were fully destroyed by the cyclone thanked government in assisting in rebuilding their lives. We are grateful to government as we did not expect to be given our new home after the cyclone took our home away in December, said Tagi Moala a resident of Nadi who stepped into her new home after the last one was destroyed during Hurricane Evan. I would like to thank the Prime Minister as he has treated everyone equally. Before it was those in urban areas that used to get the first priority but this government has shown that everyone is equal and has treated us equally. The homes were handed over to its owners by the District Officer Nadi,
Peni Koro in the different areas of Nadi including those living in Nagado at the foot of the sleeping giant mountain. Its been almost a year since the cyclone hit us but government is thankful for your understanding and patience, he told the home owners. There have been a lot of damages in the whole of the western division and not Nadi alone and we are happy that some of you will now be able to benefit through government rehabilitation. Another resident Iosefo Nasaro could not hold back his emotions as he was handed the keys for his new home. I do not have words to thank this government for what it has done for me and my family. After we lost our home, we stayed with other villagers as we had nowhere to go, Mr Nasaro said. My two children now have a home they can call their and I must thank the Prime Minister and his ministers for their assistance.
Ross and Cheryl Whittaker, Robert and Chris Radcliffe, Rod and Jayne Roberts on board Blue Lagoon Cruise's MV Fiji Princess at the Sacred Islands
FIJI has proven to be more than just a tourist destination for two Australian couples who found out this week that travel also provided an opportunity to meet up with people from your own home town. As guests on Blue Lagoon Cruise's MV Fiji Princess, Robert and Chris Radcliffe of Port Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, were pleasantly surprised when they were introduced to Jayne and Rod Roberts. "We live practically five minutes away from each other and apart from having such a great holiday in Fiji and on the Fiji Princess, we are now buddies for life," said Mr Roberts. The two couples were among about 60 guests that launched Blue Lagoon's brand new cruise itinerary a sevenday sojourn through the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups of islands.
General manager operations Craig Mercer said the launch was historic because it offered guests on resorts in the Mamanuca Group a chance to join their vessel for a four-day cruise via transfer on high speed South Sea Cruises catamarans. Mr Mercer said, to his knowledge, this was the first time island resort guests had the opportunity to enjoy such a holiday experience. "This has never been offered before, instead of travelling back to Port Denarau to begin their cruise, guests get transferred off the island straight onto the MV Fiji Princess," he said. Mr Mercer added cruise numbers had risen and pegged the success of Blue Lagoon Cruises to the quality of their product and the outstanding efforts of the crew.

Vodafone Fiji has launched its Tap to Win $100,000 worth of prizes with new e-ticketing promotion. Every day one lucky customer will win $1000 cool hard cash. Thirteen lucky customers will win $50 worth of e-ticketing value daily and 166 customers will go into the draw daily to win $10 free talk time. In all, a total of 180 winners will be drawn daily until the promotion concludes. Vodafones chief marketing officer, Sanjeewa Perera, said: This promotion is the first rewards campaign for our e-ticketing customers. All they have to do is tap their e-ticketing card on buses fitted with Vodafone and Fonelogy consoles. Each time e-ticketing customers pay their bus fare with e-ticketing
cards, they automatically go into the draw to win prizes. There will be no additional charges to get into the draw. With more than 430,000 active Vodafone e-ticketing cards in the market, and growing, we are confident that our customers and our partner bus operators will enjoy the benefits of our latest technology for payments. More promotions planned Mr Perera said this was only the beginning. As we progress through the year, we will be launching more exciting and rewarding promotions through e-ticketing, he said. We are proud to be the first to bring the NFC technology to Fiji and offer its benefits to our customers and business partners.
THE provisional value of goods imported in May this year was $624.6million while the total for exports was $168.3m. And total imports increased by $320.5m while total exports decreased by $26.3m compared to the previous corresponding month. According to a recent report on the International Merchandise Trade figures by government statistician Epeli Waqavonovono, trade deficit for May this year amounted to $456.4m compared to $236.5m in April. Compared to May last year, it was recorded that vehicles, aircraft and associated transport equipment increased from $248.5m to $269.7m because of the import of an aircraft (Airbus).
"Notable increases include machinery, mechanical, electrical appliances at $33.4m to $83m due to increased imports of turbo jets and propeller and other gas turbine. "Mineral products, chemicals and allied products also increased in imports." However, he said import decreases were for live animals and animal products, down by $14.3m to $21.4m because of the decrease in imports of fresh fish. Fiji's major sources of imports were France, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and China for that month. He said there were no domestic export categories recording notable increases but export decreases were for live animals and animals products.
Four months after Levuka Town was declared a world heritage site, the government and the town council have seen an increase in economic activity on the island. According to Lomaiviti provincial administrator Lomaiviti, Kepeli Kubunameca, the land value at Baba settlement for instance had risen dramatically. The value for a piece of land above the town area had risen from $20,000 to about $200,000. "Since Levuka was declared a heritage site in June, my office and other government offices have been receiving calls from here and overseas every second day," he said. "And they are interested in buying properties here in Levuka. We have interested buyers from Australia and China." In June this year, UNESCO declared the Old Capital a world heritage site because of the unique colonial structures that have remained since the 1800s. "Just the word heritage has added value to the town because it is now an international town and we count it as a blessing," Mr Kubunameca said. Levuka Town Council CEO Suliana Sandy said the northern end of Levuka Town was occupied by Europeans. "We have seen a lot of investors expressing their interest in establishing businesses here," she said. "And a cottage industry is about to open in town, where they will sell bottles of grog known as 'Taki Mai' as a anti-depressant drink."
The town has 152 rate payers and Ms Sandy said they were also happy that a new home stay resort would open soon to cater for tourists who were flocking to the island to witness for themselves why Levuka was known as an international town. "Friends from Hawaii, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Netherlands, Tonga, Samoa, South Africa, Korea, USA and Canada stayed for one to three weeks in our lovely Ovalau and participated and also enjoyed the scenery of the first capital of Fiji and they already plan to come back next year to be part of our rugby growing development," Mr Kubunameca said. In November, the government will celebrate this milestone with the people of Ovalau. The area in the Old Capital of Fiji is 363 hectares in total with a sea area of 246.4 hectares. With historical sites such as the first government station, the first Hindu temple and Muslim mosque in Fiji, and the first place where a Catholic priest celebrated mass are just a few places why Levuka is so unique. Senior Heritage officer with the Department of Heritage, Culture and Arts, Ana Kalougata said government spent $90,000 alone this year to renovate and maintain the Catholic parish at Cawaci that was built from coral in the 1800s. Mrs Kalougata said the impact of Levuka's recognition as an international town was slowly being felt by businesses and the people in Ovalau.

As the world marked World Suicide Prevention Day, statistics from the police reveals alarming suicide and attempted suicide cases in Fiji. The statistic revealed that from January to August this year there were 80 suicide cases recorded. The males topped the list with 62 cases and females with 18 cases. More worrying is the fact that there were 83 cases of attempted suicide recorded and this time the females topped the list with 48 reported. The statistics also show an increasing trend of suicide cases among the younger and productive generation from 17 to 26- year-olds. Police Commissioner BrigadierGeneral Ioane Naivalurua says the growing trend needs to be seriously addressed. He challenged members of the community to step forward and assist the police to address this social issue. He said public awareness campaigns such as World Suicide Prevention Day was being facilitated to prevent and reduce the number of suicide and attempted suicide incidents which the Fiji Police continues to be challenged with.
Having good infrastructure could be a key factor to gain exposure for tourism in the North, says the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. As an example Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the road from Nabouwalu to Dreketi that was under construction would make travelling from Viti Levu a lot easier. He said this would not only attract foreign visitors but local visitors as well. With the road construction, better
We need to raise awareness that suicide is preventable, improve education about causes of suicide, decrease stigmatisation, join hands and reach out to our fellow humans who may be emotionally distressed and need our help, Brigadier- General Naivalurua said. The Commissioner is adamant that more proactive measures need to be adopted to prevent further loss of innocent lives. While today has been specifically set aside to raise awareness on the prevention of suicides, the issue at hand needs a more concerted and continuous approach, he said. We cant afford to wait once a year and come up with solutions to this issue, particularly since the victims are getting younger and those deemed to be in their productive years. Last year, from January to August there were 81 cases of suicide and 91 cases of attempted suicide cases reported. He said the police cannot deal with the problem on their own and urged families to spend time with their loved ones, understand what theyre going through, listen and be more understanding.
telecommunication and better infrastructure, with water, it improves the attractiveness of the destination, he said. That is a very fundamental way where it will open up Vanua Levu not just to visitors of course but also for commercial activities as well. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said tourists were already heading to Vanua Levu and that Tourism Fiji overall promoted not just Viti Levu but all parts of Fiji.

But, this week you will need to increase your pace, since there looks set to be a substantial increase in your workload. You will rise to the challenge, approaching the lined up tasks in a positive manner. In fact, you may even be ready to work overtime. On the flip side, you will not get enough time to rest and relax, and as a result, you may become temperamental. A relatively smooth personal life shall give you the much-needed respite. Cherish! Gemini You shall kick start the week on a positive note, and will be in a mood to take the challenges head on. Well, you may end up wasting a lot of time in fruitless arguments, and may even lose your focus at times. However, you will not have to regret it, as you will also spend a lot time in accumulating knowledge about things that really interest you. A favourable week for your business. The week ahead looks set to be a good period to strike new business relationships. As far as your personal life concerned, a love affair is foreseen, but you will know from the start that it is unlikely to survive for a long period. Financially, you may not face any serious problems. However, avoid spending recklessly. Cancer You are being innovative, implementing new methods in your business or profession. Brimming with enthusiasm, you will try to make up for the past dullness and lethargy. Besides,
you will look at everything with a new perspective, trying your best to infuse some freshness in your life. If you are in a committed relationship, expect to enjoy emotional and physical intimacy with your spouse. On the financial front, there may not be any serious issues, but there is a possibility that you may have to juggle your resources a bit, in order to fulfill certain obligations. Leo Matters regarding communication will hold prime importance for you this week. Despite the fact that you have been making repeated efforts to everything right problems of miscommunication or a total lack of communication may still persist in your office. You may feel tired of sorting out the same issues again and again. If you are not careful, some people may even try to mislead you. Hence, dont let your guard down. The second half of the week may bring some joyous moments, as you will strike a good rapport with someone special. You realize what a great difference a good friendship can make to your life. However, be careful as there is a strong possibility that in the heat of this blossoming relationship, you will ignore everything else, including the opinions of the others. Dont let yourself falter in the path of love. Virgo You may experience some sort of a mental block this week, and as a result, you may neither be able to concentrate on your work nor comply with your domestic responsibilities. When you will be at work, the domestic matters will keep you mentally occupied, and at home, the work pressure will keep you tensed. You badly need to set your priorities right and change the way you operate accordingly. Besides, you need to increase your adaptability to maintain a nice rapport with the people around you. Be more receptive to others, as you may chance upon some great insights by doing so. You need to get rid of your biased attitude too, in order to see the reasons why people behave in a certain fashion. Good news is that your love life may hit an exciting patch, over the weekend. Get yourself in a right frame of mind! Libra Your fortunes are likely to fluctuate wildly this week. At your workplace,
you shall be sincere and dedicated, which shall earn you the recognition and appreciation of your bosses. Financially, too, you shall be comfortable, and shall not lack the resources to buy the things you have been coveting, either for yourself or for your family members. However, your family members may not be entirely satisfied with the material gifts, and may resent the fact that you seem to be devoting more time to your profession at the cost of your domestic responsibilities. Moreover, someone may be out to smear your good name with mud, so you shall have to be careful of such greeneyed monsters. Overall, this week shall present you with some tricky situations, which will require very mature handling. Scorpio You may expect life to swing from one extreme to the other extreme this week. Professionally you shall have a joy ride, tremendously enjoying the work you are assigned, succeeding in completing it perfectly, and thereby earning the goodwill of all the people who matter. However, and this may be mainly because you have been straining yourself too much at work, your health may keep causing niggling problems. Take proper precautions, eat healthy, exercise and get proper rest in order to maintain good fitness. Remember, health is wealth! Talking about wealth, on the financial front, you may be a bit hard-up for cash, so dont spend your money recklessly. Stick strictly to the bare essential expenses, and try to save for the rainy day. You might have figured out that you have a lot of issues on your platter this week. Sagittarius This week your main focus will be on communication and related activities. You shall be busy sharing your ideas, perceptions and knowledge with people both in your personal and professional spheres. This will result in your gaining a lot of clarity about the strategies to adopt while chasing your goals. You shall also be able to accomplish those tasks that may have been piling up for a long time. Great! Given the fact that your reasoning faculties are razor-sharp now, you may find yourself at odds with the systems in place in your organisation. But, do not make an issue out of it, or you may incur the displeasure of your management, which will only work to your detriment. Capricorn
Pull up your socks and get ready to face some daunting challenges that are foreseen for you this week. You shall have to work very hard, keep immense patience and remain optimistic, or else you may get cowed down by the tasks. The best thing would be to keep pegging on without expecting any immediate benefits. However, remember that you shall have to entrust some tasks, even important ones, to others as you may not be able to do everything on your own. But, while delegating, make sure you delegate the right task to the right person. There may be some pressing domestic responsibilities too, but you will have to put them off until next week, as you may simply have too much on your plate this week. Aquarius You are set to raise the bar for others in your profession this week. You shall churn out so much output that it may be difficult for others to keep pace with you. Since you are setting the precedent, to some extent it may be resented by others, especially by people who like to take things easy. However, you dont have to worry about that; you need to just keep on giving your best, and rest assured that your career progress is bound to speed up. There may be some indecisive moments this week, but they will pass. Avoid working solo now, because working as a cohesive team shall produce better results for your organisation. Over the weekend, however, make plans to spend some quality time with your near and dear ones. Pisces Favourable events are in store for you this week. However, you shall have to take care that you dont squander your energies, and channelize them in productive ways. Your career front, too, looks very promising, as some lucrative job offers may be on the way, but pick and choose carefully, and once you have identified which one would suit your set of skills and temperament best, jump at it. In business also you shall be presented with many opportunities, but on this front you would do well to avoid risky ventures, or you may incur losses. On the personal front, things seem to be cruising smoothly. There is the offchance that someone attractive from the opposite sex may take your fancy, but do not risk the stability of your marriage. You need to tread carefully this week. Be it the question of a job change or the enticement of an extra martial affair, you have to weigh your options carefully.

Prosecutors have sought the death sentence for four men convicted of the gang rape and murder of a student on a New Delhi bus last December, saying the "diabolical" crime had shocked the country's conscience. Judge Yogesh Khanna heard arguments in a fast-track court as he considers how to punish the men who were found guilty this week of "cold-blooded murder". They will be sentenced on Friday. Judge Khanna faces widespread calls from the public and leading politicians to hand down the death sentence, which can be given for "the rarest of rare" crimes but is seldom carried out in practice. "The court should give the maximum sentence otherwise the message will go to society that deviance of this

nature will be tolerated," special public prosecutor Dayan Krishnan told the packed court. "The test is was the collective conscience shocked? There can be no better example than this case," he said, calling the crime "diabolical" in which "no element of sympathy" had been shown to the victim. "The sentence which is appropriate is nothing short of death." The 23-year-old victim, a physiotherapy student who cannot be named for legal reasons, died of internal injuries on December 29 after being lured on to the private bus following a cinema trip with a male companion. After beating up the friend, the gang brutally assaulted the woman behind tinted windows for 45 minutes before flinging the bloodied, naked and barely conscious couple from the vehicle on a road. Defence lawyers call for leniency The four convicts - Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh - were led into the court by armed police and stood at the back of the court wearing t-shirts and displaying no outward emotion. The mother of the victim was seated next to her husband as she listened intently to proceedings. "The manner (in which) they committed this crime and destroyed a life, they should not get anything less than the death sentence," she told NDTV television after the men were convicted. The lawyers acting for the men argued there was political pressure for an
The Coalition is already piling pressure on the Labor Party to "honour" the new government's mandate to repeal the carbon tax. Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott instructed his department to begin drawing up the legislation to dump the carbon pricing scheme, and says Federal Parliament will resume in late October or early November to deal with it. "My emphasis will be on being purposeful, methodical, calm and conscientious," he told Fairfax radio. "And the last thing I want to do is rush the Parliament back for a photo opportunity before the substance of the work is there for it to do." The Coalition is on track for a 32seat majority after wresting a swathe of seats from Labor and independents in Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria in Saturday's poll. Mr Abbott's spokesman - and likely minister - for the environment, Greg Hunt, says scrapping the carbon tax will be new government's "first order of business". "We want to set out now to do what we said we would do, and the only people

who stand between Australia and lower electricity prices are the Labor Party," Mr Hunt said. However, both Labor and the Greens have indicated they will not support moves to dump the carbon pricing scheme, nor will they support the Coalition's direct action scheme to address climate change. Senior Labor frontbencher Chris Bowen says his party's stance is clear. "The Labor Party believes that climate change is real," he said. "The Labor Party believes that we need to do something about it. The Labor Party believes that a market mechanism is the best way to do that, and we won't be walking away from those beliefs." Labor's opposition to the moves, would leave the bills deadlocked in the Senate and could trigger a double dissolution election - an option Mr Abbott has said is on the table. The alternative would be to wait until the newly elected senators take their seats next July, though that would mean negotiating with a disparate group including South Australian senator Nick Xenophon and, potentially, two senators from the Palmer United Party and one from the Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party. Mr Abbott says Labor and the minor parties should respect the new government's mandate. execution. Vivek Sharma, a lawyer for Gupta who was 19 at the time of the crime, argued that life imprisonment should be the sentence for a crime committed on the "spur of the moment". "The court must bear in mind that life imprisonment is the rule, and the death sentence is the exception," he said, adding there was a possibility of reforming Gupta because of his "tender age". A fifth adult defendant, bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanging in his prison cell in March while awaiting trial. The case brought simmering public anger over rape and harassment to the boil, sparking unprecedented protests, tougher new laws to tackle sex crime and a bout of introspection about India's treatment of women.
to implement its mandate," he told Fairfax radio. "Now I know it's a two-way street and respect has got to be earned rather than merely demanded, but nevertheless the people voted for change and change they will get. "And I am determined that the Parliament delivers them the change that they want."

The food the world wastes accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than any country except for China and the United States, according to a United Nations report. It says every year about a third of all food for human consumption, around 1.3 billion tonnes, is wasted, along with all the energy, water and chemicals needed to produce it and dispose of it. Almost 30 per cent of the world's farmland, and a volume of water equivalent to the annual discharge of Europe's River Volga, are in effect being used in vain. In its Food Wastage Footprint report, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimated the carbon footprint of wasted food was equivalent to 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. If it were a country, it would be the world's third biggest emitter after China and the US, suggesting that more efficient food use could contribute substantially to global efforts to cut greenhouse gases to limit global

countries, it is mainly the result of inefficient farming and a lack of proper storage facilities. "Food wastage reduction would not only avoid pressure on scarce natural
resources but also decrease the need to raise food production by 60 per cent in order to meet the 2050 population demand," the FAO said. It suggested improving communication between producers and consumers to manage the supply chain more efficiently, as well as investing more in harvesting, cooling and packaging methods. It also said consumers in the developed world should be encouraged to serve smaller portions and make more use of leftovers. Businesses should give surplus food to charities and develop alternatives to dumping organic waste in landfill, the report said. The FAO estimated the cost of the wasted food, excluding fish and seafood, around $US750 billion a year, based on producer prices. The wasted food consumes about 250 cubic kilometres of water and takes up about 1.4 billion hectares - much of it diverse natural habitat that has been cleared to make it arable.
Over 10,000 men in Asia and the Pacific admitted to committing physical and/ or sexual violence against a female partner, a UN study says. Of these, the vast majority (72-97 per cent) did not experience any legal consequences. Half of the men said their first time when they were teenagers, 14 years or younger as in the case of 23 per cent of men who raped in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, and 16 percent in Cambodia. Overall, four percent of respondents said they had perpetrated gang rape against a woman or girl, ranging from 1 to 14 percent across the various sites. This is the first time we have data from such a large sample of men on the
A 107-year-old Arkansas man has been killed during a shootout with US police and SWAT team members. Police said officers responded to a disturbance at a house in Pine Bluff city and found that suspect Monroe Isadore had pointed a gun at two people. The two victims were led out of the house. As the officers approached the bedroom where Isadore had taken cover, he shot through the door. Isadore failed to injure any of the officers with his gunfire. Supervisors began negotiating with Isadore and a Special Weapons and Tactics team was called out. Using a camera inserted into the room,
the SWAT team was able to confirm that Isadore was armed with a handgun. The officers then slipped gas into the room before Isadore responded with gunfire. "Shortly afterwards, a SWAT entry team inside the residence breached the door to the bedroom and threw a distraction device into the bedroom," the Pine Bluff Police Department statement read. "Isadore then began to fire on the entry team and the entry team engaged Isadore, killing him." The statement did not say which type of distraction device was used. Law enforcement officials are investigating the incident.
emotional abuse as a child, or witnessed the abuse of their mother while others have practices that celebrate male toughness and sexual performance, such as being involved in fights and paying for sex. To prevent violence against women, the study recommended that violence against women be made unacceptable, encourage and promote non-violent and caring ways to be a man, for example through sustained school-based or sports-based education programmes. The study also recommended that child abuse is addressed by promoting healthy families, working with young people, with a particular focus on boys and adolescents, to understand consent, and healthy sexuality, and to foster respectful relationships. The study further recommended ending impunity for men who use violence against women, particularly marital rape, through criminalisation of all forms of violence against women, and promote legal sector reform to ensure effective access to justice as well as esure the full empowerment of women and girls and eliminate gender discrimination.

Scientists say that they have discovered the single largest volcano in the world, a dead colossus deep beneath the Pacific waves. A team writing in the journal Nature Geoscience says the 310,000 sq km (119,000 sq mi) Tamu Massif is comparable in size to Mars' vast Olympus Mons volcano - the largest in the Solar System. The structure topples the previous largest on Earth, Mauna Loa in Hawaii. The massif lies some 2km below the sea. It is located on an underwater plateau known as the Shatsky Rise, about 1,600km east of Japan. It was formed about 145 million years ago when massive lava flows erupted from the centre of the volcano to form a broad, shield-like feature. The researchers doubted the submerged volcano's peak ever rose above sea level during its lifetime and say it is unlikely to erupt again. "The bottom line is that we think that Tamu Massif was built in a short (geologically speaking) time of one to several million years and it has been extinct since," co-author William Sager, from the University of Houston, US, told the AFP news agency. "One interesting angle is that there

were lots of oceanic plateaus (that) erupted during the Cretaceous Period (145-65 million years ago) but we don't see them since. Scientists would like to know why." Prof Sager began studying the structure two decades ago, but it had been unclear whether the massif was one single volcano or many - a kind that exists in dozens of locations around the planet. While Olympus Mons on Mars has relatively shallow roots, the Tamu Massif extends some 30 km (18 miles) into the Earth's crust. And other volcanic behemoths could be lurking among the dozen or so large oceanic plateaux around the world, he thought. "We don't have the data to see inside them and know their structure, but it would not surprise me to find out that there are more like Tamu out there," said Dr Sager. "Indeed, the biggest oceanic plateau is Ontong Java plateau, near the equator in the Pacific, east of the Solomon Islands. It is much bigger than Tamu it's the size of France." The name Tamu comes from Texas A&M University, where Prof Sager previously taught before moving to the University of Houston.
More than 200,000 people from 140 countries have applied to go to Mars and never return, the group behind an ambitious venture to colonise the inhospitable red planet says. Bas Lansdorp, a Dutch engineer and entrepreneur, plans to establish a permanent base on Mars in a mission he hopes will take off in 2022, if he can find the necessary $6.49 billion. One in four of the 202,586 applicants for the one-way trip are Americans, says Mars One, a non-profit group which initiated the hunt for "would-be Mars settlers" in April. There are also hopefuls from India (10 per cent), China (6 per cent) and Brazil (5 per cent), among other countries, the group says. By 2015, Mars One expects put up to 10 four-member teams through intensive training, with the first of those teams reaching to Mars in 2023 on a high-risk journey that would take seven months to complete. If they survive the trip, the human Martians will have to deal with temperatures of minus 55 degrees C in a desert-like atmosphere that consists
Jewel thieves in France have carried off another spectacular heist, stealing gems and watches worth about $2.8 million. Four men rammed a four-wheel-drive into an upmarket Paris jewellery store, before grabbing their loot and setting fire to the vehicle. They escaped in another car. Forensic police officers have been called to the site of the robbery at the Casty store on Rue de Castiglione in central Paris, which is home to numerous jewellery shops. Suspicion is likely to fall on the Pink Panther gang - a loosely aligned
network of criminals that has carried out 300 such raids globally since 1999. At the end of July, an armed man carried out a robbery in broad daylight at a diamond exhibition at the Carlton hotel in Cannes, making off with jewellery worth $140 million in one of the world's biggest heists. Paris has also been the scene of highprofile robberies. In December 2008, three men emptied almost all of the stock of gems from the Harry Winston store. In 2009, police said they had recovered 80 per cent of the haul.
A Montana newlywed has been charged with murder after admitting she shoved her husband off a cliff eight days into their marriage, authorities say. Jordan Linn Graham, 22, appeared in a federal court on Monday charged with Cody Johnson's death on July 7. Police say Ms Graham initially lied about what happened that evening. She reported her 25-year-old husband missing the next day. Her lawyer declined to comment to the Associated Press news agency. Johnson's family had called for an investigation after his body was recovered by helicopter below a steep viewpoint known as the Loop, in Glacier National Park on July 12. 'Fell face first' According to an FBI affidavit, in an initial interview on July 9, Ms Graham told police she had received a text from her husband that he was going for a drive with a friend. But, she said, both she and her husband usually deleted their texts, and so she could not show police the message in question. Two days later she was the first to report finding her husband's dead body. A park ranger told her it was unusual

The project has the support of Gerard 't Hooft, the Dutch joint recipient of the 1999 Nobel prize for physics. "The long-term aim is to have a lasting colony," Mr 't Hooft said. "This expansion will not be easy. How soon that will be accomplished is anyone's guess." Space agencies including NASA have expressed scepticism about the viability of Mr Lansdorp's plan, saying the technology to establish a human colony on Mars does not exist. Mars One says on its website that the mission is a decade-long endeavour, with funding intended to come from the global audience of an interactive, televised broadcast of every aspect of the mission. So far, there have only been unmanned missions to Mars undertaken by NASA, which has signalled its intent to send astronauts there within 20 years.
that she had found the body, according to the affidavit. "It was a place he wanted to see before he died," she allegedly replied. According to the sworn statement, on July 16 she admitted having lied to police about her husband's death. She is said to have told investigators that the couple had been arguing when they agreed to go to the hiking trail at the Loop, where their bickering worsened. Johnson grabbed her arm before she removed his hand, and "due to her anger, she pushed Johnson with both hands in the back, and as a result, he fell face first off the cliff", says the affidavit. The accused had doubts about her week-old marriage, according to text messages she allegedly sent to a friend on the night Johnson died. She wrote that she was "having second thoughts about having been married", the FBI said. That night, she texted the friend that she was about to talk to her husband. "But dead serious if u don't hear from me at all again tonight, something happened," Ms Graham wrote, according to the affidavit.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced a three-year freeze on EI premiums, saying he is still confident about balancing the budget by 2015, just not on the backs of taxpayers. The government announced an annual increase of 5% in EI premiums in 2011 after the global recession led to a spike in unemployment, which saw the EI operating account draw a deficit of $9.2 billion. With unemployment falling and fewer Canadians claiming EI, Flaherty says the premium increase isn't necessary anymore. "More people are working, so more people are paying into the operating account," Flaherty told reporters Monday. "And fewer people are claiming. The result (is that) the account will get into balance earlier than we had anticipated." Greg Thomas, director of the Canadian
Taxpayer Federation, says it isn't quite that simple. Individuals making the EI maximum will still pay rates at a 25% increase since 2008, Thomas says. Additionally, he said the government continues to profit from the EI program while making it harder for unemployed Canadians to qualify for it. "Last year, the government took nearly $3 billion more than it paid out in EI benefits. This year it will be more like $5 billion." NDP employment critic Jinny Sims says Monday's announcement is an example of the government pretending to fix a problem it created. "The Conservatives have restricted who can access this fund incredibly and what's happening now is people who have been paying in are going to find they are denied access to these benefits," Sims said.
Colombian police say they have arrested a Toronto woman who simulated pregnancy to try to smuggle cocaine. Col. Esteban Arias says 28-year-old Tabitha Leah Ritchie was stopped while trying to board an Air Canada flight in Bogota after an inspector noted that her belly was unusually cold and hard. He says police discovered a false belly made of latex taped to her
body and they found 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of cocaine. Police say Ritchie arrived in Colombia on Aug. 6 and he identified her as a social worker. The Canadian Embassy did not respond to requests for details. Colombian officials say 874 foreigners are held in the countrys lockups, most on drug charges.
Police in Metro Vancouver are looking for at least six thieves who have targeted dozens of seniors in broad daylight, using so-called distraction and blessing scams. According to police records compiled by the media, the victims often come from different cultures living all across Metro Vancouver. But what they all share in common is that they are vulnerable seniors who are too easily targeted by clever thieves, eager to take their jewelry, cash and other valuables. In the distraction scam thieves approach a potential victim who is wearing gold earrings, necklaces, bracelets or rings, and overwhelms him or her by talking and placing fake jewelry or a scarf on the victim's head, neck or wrist. The thief then removes the victim's jewelry, leaving behind the fake jewelry or scarf in its place. The victims, who have become disoriented and confused, don't know they've been scammed until they notice their jewelry is missing. In the blessing scam a group of Cantonese-speaking Asian suspects convinced the seniors they needed to have a large sum of money and jewelry blessed by a spiritual doctor to ward off
the bad luck. The suspects then arrange for the seniors to bring them the valuables a few hours later, have the victims put them in a bag to be blessed and tell them not to check the contents for a specific period. But when the bag is opened, the seniors are alarmed to learn that their valuables have been replaced with worthless items. Crimes of opportunity Police have not established any organized connection between the two types of scams, but RCMP Sgt. Bernie Smandych says both appear to simple crimes of opportunity. "It seems to be a predator who is not too complicated and sees an opportunity that takes advantage of that opportunity, it's usually not a complex type of criminal." Martha Jane Lewis at the B.C. Centre for Elder Advocacy and Support says scammers play upon seniors' emotional vulnerability. "These are just awful sociopathic people," she said. Police say many of these thefts likely go unreported because seniors are embarrassed to report them.

For all the growing diversity the 2011 census and related surveys have portrayed in Canada, Wednesday's final release reveals a contrasting constant: the richest of the rich in Canada are married, middle-aged white men. The rest of us are up to our eyeballs in mortgage debt. Statistics Canada has published the final batch of data from its new and controversial National Household Survey -- the survey meant to stand in for the long-form census scrapped by the Conservatives in 2010. The release was delayed for a month due to a glitch in the agency's formulae. It shows that the median family income in Canada is $76,000 -- generally higher in the West than the East -- while the median individual income is just $27,600. That means just as many individuals earn less than $27,600 as earn more. The richest 10 per cent of individuals are making more than $80,400. And the very rich -- the 272,600 individuals that make up the top one per cent -- are all making more than $191,100. Those people are making an average of $381,300 each, 10 times the average Canadian income of $38,700. The large discrepancy between the median and the average suggests there is a very small percentage of the super-rich. The portrait of the rich differs starkly from the portrait of Canada in general that has been exposed in previous releases of the census and NHS. Data up till now have shown an increasingly diverse population -- aging, but also
Norris crunched some of the numbers himself and adjusted for inflation, finding that median family income climbed by about six per cent nationally between the last census and now. The biggest leap was in the Fort McMurray, where median family income jumped 33 per cent. Families in St. John's saw their median incomes rise 18 per cent over the five years. Statcan does, however, venture to make some basic historical comparisons when it comes to mortgage debt and home ownership. The NHS shows that 69 per cent of households in Canada own their home, up only slightly from the 2006 census after a long, historical climb in home ownership. Canadians have paid a price for their tendency to buy instead of rent. More than 25.2 per cent of households are spending more than 30 per cent of their income on shelter, surpassing the standard measure for having an affordable home. That's up slightly from 24.9 per cent in 2006. Of those living in an unaffordable home, 83 per cent of them were saddled with a mortgage. Overall, 58.6 per cent of homeowners were still paying off their mortgages according to the 2011 survey. That's up from 57.9 per cent in 2006 and 55.2 in 2001. In 1991, it was 51.5 per cent. Toronto was the most costly city to maintain a home, at $1,366 a month, while Trois-Rivieres, Que., was the cheapest at $697.
B.C. Man Fighting Ticket After Irate Mailman Allegedly Kicked His Cocker Spaniel And Reported A Dog Attack
A B.C. man is claiming he has been unjustly maligned by Canada Post after a mail carrier kicked his yapping cocker spaniel, threatened him with pepper spray and then reported the incident to authorities as a dog attack. I have a sense that he must be pretty senior in the union. Theyre taking actions way before any investigation was made, said Richmond resident Dominic Li, who is disputing a municipal violation ticket that he says was issued on the untruthful claims of the mail carrier. The incident occurred on July 26 while Mr. Li and his wife were accompanying their dog Craven on a routine front yard bathroom break. Right around 11 a.m., said Mr. Li, after spotting an approaching mail carrier, the dog erupted into a barking fit. Almost immediately, said Mr. Li, the mail carrier ran at the dog and delivered two kicks to the head. When he protested and scooped the dog into his arms, thats when he came up to my face two inches away from my face and said f you, he said, adding that he then pushed the man away with his left hand. He started swearing, cussing I dont know what he was talking about and his right hand was going through his bag and thats when he said Im going to pepper spray your fing ass! The standoff then fizzled out, with Mr. Li heading indoors to file a complaint with Canada Post and the mail carrier whipping out his cellphone, presumably to do the same. By the next delivery day, Mr. Li said he was visited by a Canada Post supervisor and a union representative, who informed him that his mail service had been cut off. Two weeks after that, the City of Richmond slapped him with a $125 violation ticket. There was no investigation at all; they only took the statement from the mailman, and not us, he said. Service resumed after Mr. Li signed a letter issued in the wake of the incident after taking special care to note that he was not claiming responsibility for the alleged dog attack, which resulted in no injuries to the mail carrier. Nevertheless, Mr. Li is disputing the ticket and has complained to the Canada Post ombudsman, alleging extreme bias in favour of the mail carrier. The carrier, whom Mr. Li knows only as Tom the mailman, is relatively new to the route. His predecessor, a dog owner, typically responded to Craven by playing with him, said Mr. Li. Every year, more than 500 bites from dogs big or small are serious enough to require medical attention, said Canada Post spokeswoman Anick Losier. Too often, the first thing our carriers hear from customers, after being bitten, is my dog has never done this before or has never been violent, she added, although she declined to comment on Mr. Lis case specifically. The sentiment was shared by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. [I]n our long experience, the size and breed of the dog are not good indicators of whether its dangerous, said CUPW spokesman Kevin Matthews. Postal workers are given extensive training in dog deterrence, occasionally provided workshops with dog behaviouralists and are equipped with pepper spray although the deterrent is only meant as a last-ditch measure against a surprise dog attack. Normally, said Ms. Losier, when a mail carrier risks encountering a dog, the employee is instructed to stay clear of the dog and report the issue to his or her supervisor. In cases where an incident has happened, however, mail service is immediately suspended until the resident signs a letter of assurance that the dog will be kept safely restrained. If he was afraid of dogs, the owners are there, shouldnt you be approaching the owners first? said Mr. Li, noting that he was a mere two metres away from Craven when the mail carrier landed his first kick. He also alleged the mail carrier entered his property by cutting across his front lawn. Not normally a concern, he said, but a possible reason Craven may have started to bark. Although the City of Richmond did not comment on Mr. Lis case, the municipality denied taking dangerous dog orders directly from Canada Post. We do not track specific complaints from Canada Post nor do we issue tickets solely on their recommendation, said city spokesman Ted Townsend. Although Canada Post submitted the initial complaint against Craven, a Richmond bylaw officer would decide to lay the charge only after an independent investigation, he said.

BC Hydro customers could be facing a 26 per cent rate increase by 2016, according to a confidential document that was leaked to the media but the government says the forecast increase has yet to be approved. The document says the rate increase is necessary to pay for roughly $1 billion in rising costs, including contracts with independent power producers and capital projects needed to meet increasing power demands. But B.C. Energy Minister Bill Bennett says the report was just a preliminary forecast, and no rate increases have been approved. "It's way too early to speculate on how much rates will go up. They will have to go up some. All I can say is that was a very early document. It was the first meeting of five that was held to discuss rates and rates will not go up by what was said in that document," said Bennett Bennett says investments in new transmission and generation facilities will power the B.C. economy in the future and British Columbians can expect an electrical rate increase to fund those projects. Energy expert and lawyer, David Austin says major rate increases are inevitable, because the corporation needs to pay the bills for new capital projects and rebuild aging infrastructure. "In the 1970's and the 1980's when BC Hydro was spending a lot of money on the new dams and the new transmission lines, rate increases were on the same par as they are proposed for today. Nothing is new except that people just don't want to face reality," said Austin. But NDP MLA John Horgan is asking why the issue wasn't addressed earlier. "It's one of those, 'I hate to say I told you so,' but I've been talking about the consequences of buying more power than we need at a price that's higher than the market will bear for some time, in fact for years. "Before the election, Rich Coleman said everything was fine. rate hearing and [said] a 1.57 per cent increase would be adequate." BC Hydro estimates a 10 per cent rate increase would cost the average residential customer an additional $105 a year, while small commercial customers would pay an average $240 per year. Rate forecast leaked by union The forecast rate increases were contained in a confidential report for BC Hydro's Rates Working Group that was leaked by the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE Local 378), which represents 1,900 workers at BC Hydro. The union's legal director Jim Quail blamed the Liberal government for the forecast increases, saying they had mismanaged BC Hydro for political purposes. "Theres so much here that proves government mismanagement its hard to pick a starting point, said Quail in a statement released on Wednesday morning. "Theres the fact that by putting off a rate increase before the election Christy Clark ensured Hydro customers will pay an extra 16 per cent more that could have been avoided. There are the mounting costs of private power contracts contracts the government is now scrambling to get out of. "And despite all of this, the governments siphoning off money from BC Hydro to the tune of 27 per cent of its total revenue requirement by 2016, instead of letting the utility balance its own books," he said. "That means that of every $100 customers pay, $27 will go straight to the provincial treasury." The B.C. government budget indicates it expects to receive $545 million in revenue from the Crown corporation this year. Most cynically, the rate hike arc has been managed so rates will be lowest just in time for the next election. They are actually planning on repeating what they did last time, suppressing rates before we go to the polls, hoping we all have short memories," said Quail. the livestock owner, who told police the six missing sheep are worth $250 each. A major part of discipline is learning how to talk with children. The way you talk to your child teaches him how to talk to others. Here are some talking tips we have learned with our children: 1. Connect Before You Direct - Before giving your child directions, squat to your child's eye level and engage your child in eye-to-eye contact to get his attention. Teach him how to focus: "Mary, I need your eyes." "Billy, I need your ears." Offer the same body language when listening to the child. Be sure not to make your eye contact so intense that your child perceives it as controlling rather than connecting. 2. Address The Child - Open your request with the child's name, "Lauren, will you please..." 3. Stay Brief - We use the one-sentence rule: Put the main directive in the opening sentence. The longer you ramble, the more likely your child is to become parent-deaf. Too much talking is a very common mistake when dialoging about an issue. It gives the child the feeling that you're not quite sure what it is you want to say. 4. Stay Simple - Use short sentences with one-syllable words. Listen to how kids communicate with each other and take note. When your child shows that glazed, disinterested look, you are no longer being understood. 5. Ask Your Child to Repeat the Request Back to You - If he can't, it's too long or too complicated. 6. Make an offer the child can't refuse You can reason with a two or three-yearold, especially to avoid power struggles. "Get dressed so you can go outside and play." Offer a reason for your request that is to the child's advantage and one that is difficult to refuse. This gives her a reason to move out of her power position and do what you want her to do. 7. Be Positive - Instead of "no running," try: "Inside we walk, outside you may run." 8. Begin your Directives With "I want." - Instead of "Get down," say "I want you to get down." Instead of "Let Becky have a turn," say "I want you to let Becky have a turn now." This
works well with children who want to please but don't like being ordered. By saying "I want," you give a reason for compliance rather than just an order. 9. "When...Then."" - When you get your teeth brushed, then we'll begin the story." "When your work is finished, then you can watch TV." "When," which implies that you expect obedience, works better than "if," which suggests that the child has a choice when you don't mean to give him one. 10. Legs First, Mouth Second - Instead of hollering, "Turn off the TV, it's time for dinner!" walk into the room where your child is watching TV, join in with your child's interests for a few minutes, and then, during a commercial break, have your child turn off the TV. Going to your child conveys you're serious about your request; otherwise children interpret this as a mere preference. 11. Give Choices - "Do you want to put your pajamas on or brush your teeth first?" "Red shirt or blue one?" 12. Speak Developmentally Correctly - The younger the child, the shorter and simpler your directives should be. Consider your child's level of understanding. For example, a common error parents make is asking a threeyear- old, "Why did you do that?" Most adults can't always answer that question about their behavior. Try instead, "Let's talk about what you did." 13. Speak Socially Correctly - Even a two-year-old can learn "please." Expect your child to be polite. Children shouldn't feel manners are optional. Speak to your children the way you want them to speak to you. 14. Speak Psychologically Correctly - Threats and judgmental openers are likely to put the child on the defensive. "You" messages make a child clam up. "I" messages are non-accusing. Instead of "You'd better do this..." or "You must...," try "I would like...." or "I am so pleased when you..." Instead of "You need to clear the table," say "I need you to clear the table." Don't ask a leading question when a negative answer is not an option. "Will you please pick up your coat?" Just say, "Pick up your coat, please."

Had trouble sleeping last night? You may want to avoid going grocery shopping today. According to a new study from Sweden, when were sleep-deprived, we end up buying more food overall and more high-calorie foods in particular than we do after a good nights rest. Other, earlier studies have shown that we tend to eat more food than usual particularly high-calorie snacks after were up all night. But this new study suggests that sleep deprivation has an even longer effect on our dietary habits by influencing what we bring home from the grocery store and put in our refrigerators and pantries. Study details For the study, the researchers recruited 14 healthy, normal-weight men in their early 20s. None had any reported sleep problems. The young men
Grocery Shopping After A Sleepless Night Adds Up To More Calories, Study Finds
were brought into a sleep lab on two occasions, a month apart. During one of the visits, they were kept awake throughout the night; during the other, they were allowed to sleep. In the morning, the participants were offered a full breakfast to ensure that they wouldnt be hungry. (Interestingly, as predicted from previous studies, the young men tended to eat larger portions of food after being deprived of sleep than they did after getting a full nights sleep.) Then the men were given the equivalent of about $50 and instructed to spend all of it in an online grocery store. The store had 40 items, including 20 high-calorie foods and 20 low-calorie ones. On the morning after they were kept awake all night, the participants purchased an average of 9 percent more total calories and 18 percent more total grams of food with their money than they did after a night of laboratory sleep. This finding suggests, according to the studys authors, that increased food purchasing in the morning after nocturnal wakefulness may represent another mechanisms through which a repeated or chronic lack of sleep, e.g., through shift work, promotes weight gain. Our findings are broadly significant, they add, for people working in a variety of professions, including shift workers, cab drivers, nurses, doctors, and other jobs requiring work at night. More vulnerable to impulsive decisions The study also found that sleep deprivation causes blood levels of the hormone ghrelin, which is suspected of increasing hunger, to rise. But no direct correlation was observed between ghrelin levels and the amount of food purchased by the studys participants.
That suggests, say the studys authors, that other factors are involved. Indeed, research involving functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has suggested that sleep deprivation leaves the brain more vulnerable to impulsive decision-making. In other words, when were tired, were less likely to be able to resist slipping a candy bar or six-pack of sugary soft drinks into our grocery cart. Caveats Like all studies, this current one has its limitations. Most notably, its a very small study and involves only young men living in Sweden. The findings may or may not hold up in larger and more diverse groups. Still, its always a good idea to keep your wits about you while grocery shopping and especially, perhaps, after a bad nights sleep.
Not being able to sleep at night could be costing our mind dearly, as researchers have observed difference in brain function of people saying they have insomnia and those enjoying a full night's sleep. According to researchers at the University of California, San Diego, the poor sleepers struggled in focussing part of their brain during memory tests. Other experts said the brain's wiring may actually be affecting perceptions of sleep quality. The findings, published in the journal Sleep, have shown how people with insomnia not just struggle to sleep at night, but it also has consequences for them during the day in terms of delayed
reaction times and memory. The study compared 25 people who said they had insomnia with as many describing themselves as good sleepers. MRI brain scans were carried out while they performed increasingly challenging memory tests. Sean Drummond, one of the researchers, said: 'We found that insomnia subjects did not properly turn on brain regions critical to a working memory task and did not turn off 'mind-wandering' brain regions irrelevant to the task. 'This data helps us understand that people with insomnia not only have trouble sleeping at night, but their brains are not functioning as efficiently during the day.'

It's been five years since Govinda landed a resounding slap on the face of Santosh Rai, a curious visitor on the sets of his film Money Hai Toh Honey Hai. Looks like finally the law has caught up with the actor, with the Borivali court recently issuing a non-bailable warrant against him. However luckily for Govinda, his advocate was able to present papers for a stay order in the High Court, providing the actor some relief. Govinda was said to have assaulted Rai
for apparently misbehaving with some women artists in January 2008. Says a source, `After a formal complaint was lodged against him, Govinda was issued summons. But with the actor failing to show up before the magistrate, he was warned with the possibility of a non-bailable warrant.` A fresh warrant has been issued but with his advocate intervening, Chi Chi has apparently been exempted from attending court. The next hearing on the matter is on September 16.

Describing Bachchan as a role model, Speaker Bercow said, "You have been a role model and Amitabh you deserve the award." British actor Hugh Grant was present at the award ceremony which was chaired by Rt Hon Keith Vaz, MP, Chairman, Home Affairs Select Committee. The citation noted that "Amitabh first gained popularity in the early 1970s as the 'angry young man' of Hindi cinema, and has since appeared in over 180 Indian films in a career spanning more than four decades. Bachchan is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema." "He is a Global patron for the diabetes charity Silver Star and last year was presented with a Mobile Diabetes Unit for his home city Mumbai named 'Amitabh' in his honour," the citation said. Receiving the award, Bachchan said he was overwhelmed to receive the "extremely historic award." "I have been extremely overwhelmed by the love and affection of the people of Great Britain," and thanked his parents and family for their support in
achieving what he did. He said when Keith Vaz introduced him to the Diabetes awareness campaign, "It has been a great privilege and honour to visit various cities in helping people to tackle diabetes." The actor thanked Vaz for naming one of the Mobile Diabetes Units in his name in Mumbai and welcomed the announcement to start yet another mobile unit in Delhi, named after his father Harvanshrai Bachchan. "My father taught English in Allahabad University and in 1952 he was the first Indian to get a Doctorate in English Language at the Cambridge. He completed his Doctorate in two years instead of normal 4 years." Referring to Bollywood, he said, "There are very few institutions which can boast of such unity as the Film industry." Asked about his future plans, Bachchan said, "I just did a film called "Satyagraha" which dealt with sociopolitical issues. There are several other films in the pipeline including 'Bhootnath 2'. I am also currently busy with the latest Hindi version of "Who wants to become a Millionaire." In his brief address, actor Hugh Grant said, "It is truly a great pleasure meeting Amitabh Bachchan. He is a gigantic actor, super star who is hugely popular. He is also like a saint in some way because of his charity and animal welfare work. If ever anyone who deserve the Global Diversity Award, it is Amitabh Bachchan. Congratulations."

The Cadillac CTS led GM's blitz against banality, back in 2001. And since then, the "standard of the world" brand has battled back, segment by segment, replacing duller rolling stock with better cars, every time. The streak goes on with the 2014 Cadillac CTS, now ready for its worldwide launch. The thirdgeneration CTS finally tackles the thorny E-Class/5-Series/A6 superset head-on, while it marches Cadillac a few more brisk steps away from its straight-edged Art & Science theming. That retreat is unmistakable--because from some angles, the 2014 CTS has an uncanny resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It's all in the rear roofline, the angle of the pillar that bends down toward the trunklid, and the shapes of the side glass. Everywhere else, the CTS is Cadillac, evolving as it is. The blunt edges have been smoothed down. The CTS' grille has fewer ribs and a higher badge, and the vertical headlamps get LED trim that does the neat trick of pulling the nose to the ground, while it picks it up and into the fenders. The lessons learned from the Cadillac ATS get applied inside the 2014 CTS. The dash cap is wrapped in a single piece that drapes into the center stack, and wood trim mingles with cut-andsew upholstery, at least on uplevel models. The two-tone themes that liven up the ATS can be had on the CTS too, and present some of the same exciting options and pitfalls--we haven't seen all the combinations, but the ATS can get overwhelmed with a poor hand on the options tiller, and we assume the same holds true for the CTS. By the way, the CTS sedan is the only model being shown off by Cadillac to date. From what we understand, the coupe and wagon editions might not return, now that Cadillac has the ELR electric coupe and the SRX crossover wagon to support. Bracketed by turbos Three engines frame the 2014 CTS's argument in the mid-size luxury debate. The base powerplant is the same 2.0-liter turbocharged fourcylinder, rated at 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, that launched with the 2013 ATS just last year. GM says it's likely worth an EPA rating of 19/30 mpg in its lightest rear-wheeldrive application, with the standard paddle-shifted six-speed automatic. All-wheel drive drops gas mileage to 18/26 mpg. The ever-present 3.6-liter V-6 shows up in the midrange CTS, where it checks in with 321 horsepower and 275 poundfeet of torque, and a choice of rearor all-wheel drive. Fuel economy's estimated at 19/28 mpg and 18/27 mpg, respectively. The same six-speed automatic with paddles is standard, but a new eight-speed, paddle-shifted automatic is an option with this engine. At the peak of the CTS lineup there's the Vsport, fitted with GM's new twin-
Autos
turbo 3.6-liter V-6, and good for 420 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It's rear-drive only, paddleshifted eight-speed automatic only, and rates 17/25 mpg in preliminary gasmileage tests. All versions of the CTS ride on a fully independent suspension, and use electric power steering. All models will have access to GM's Magnetic Ride Control adjustable dampers, while the Vsport gets a flurry of handling upgrades all its own, including 18-inch Pirelli tires, with 19-inch upgrades, quicker steering, a track mode, an electronic limited-slip differential, and Brembo brakes. No matter which version's in question, GM says weight distribution of 51:49 will keep handling well-balanced--and it says a relatively light curb weight of 3,616 pounds in base trim puts the CTS about 200 pounds under the BMW 528i and 250 pounds under the lastgeneration CTS. Finally, a true mid-sizer That's all the more surprising since the 2014 CTS has grown up and out, now fitting the current definition of midsize--at least, in the luxury realm. The 2014 CTS is 195.5 inches long overall--4.1 inches longer than before-and the wheelbase is 114.6 inches, an increase of 1.1 inches. The roofline's lower by an inch, to 57.2 inches. We expect great things from the CTS's seats, if those in the ATS and other new GM products are any example. The CTS will be offered with standardissue seats with 14-way power adjustments; leather-trimmed, 16-way adjustable seats and 20-way adjustable seats are options, with manual tweaks for the bottom cushion length and the headressts. As for quality, GM's active noise cancellation will be in effect on fourcylinder versions, cutting perceived interior noise levels by up to 20 dB. It's essentially white noise pumped into
the cabin through the CTS' Bose audio system. Safer seats? Like the 2013 ATS, the 2014 CTS will get a full dose of tech-intensive safety features, above and beyond the usual stability control. Ten airbags, parking sensors, rearview cameras--they're a little passe, aren't they? The CTS will offer a combination of radar and cameras that enable forward-collision alerts, adaptive cruise control, crosstraffic alerts, and lane-departure warnings. The CTS also gets the clever haptic setup from the ATS and XTS, wherein the lane-keeping functions don't vibrate the wheel as they do on some luxury cars--they vibrate the seat, either on the left or the right side of the bottom cushion, depending on which side you transgress. GM's OnStar system is free for a year with the 2014 CTS, and comes bundled with smartphone-app access, down to remote start. 2014 CTS features and options The 2014 Cadillac CTS will come in three different trim levels, named just as those on the ATS are named:
Luxury, Performance, and Premium. All versions will come with power features, cruise control, climate control, and Bluetooth with audio streaming. Cadillac's CUE system will be available. It's a defining piece of technology for the brand, and one that's not completely baked--a sentiment we have regarding other infotainment systems. In particular, CUE's haptic feedback isn't always predictable, and its natural-language recognition isn't foolproof. But it's a dramatic-looking setup with some fascinating features worth learning: there's a big 8.0-inch screen that displays navigation, audio, climate, and phone functions, linked to a second screen between the gauges, controlled by voice or by steeringwheel controls. Navigation integrates with CUE, but it's an option on base versions of the CTS. Other nifty touches include parking assist, which steers the car into parallel spots while the driver keeps a foot on the pedals; ambient LED lighting; Bose audio; and a cupholder with a poweroperated cover. Forget what the GPS says--that's the signal you've arrived.

We should be eating at least two portions of fish a week including one of oily fish. Fish and shellfish are good sources of a variety of vitamins and minerals, and oily fish is particularly rich in omega 3 fatty acids. But if we want to make sure there are enough fish to eat now, and in the future, we need to start thinking about the choices we make when we choose which fish we eat. Why is fish a healthy choice? Fish and shellfish are good sources of essential vitamins, such as niacin, and minerals, such as selenium and iodine. Different types of seafood also give different health benefits. Check out the lists below. Oily fish includes fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout and herring is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which helps prevent heart disease is a good source of vitamins A and D White fish includes fish such as haddock, plaice, pollack, coley and cod is very low in fat. This means, just like beans and pulses or chicken without the skin, white fish is a healthier low-fat alternative to, for example, red or processed meat that tends to be higher in fat, especially saturated fat contains some omega 3 fatty acids, but at much lower levels than oily fish. Shellfish includes prawns, mussels and langoustine is low in fat is a good source of selenium, zinc, iodine and copper some types such as mussels, oysters, squid and crab are also good sources of omega 3 fatty acids. Fish where you also eat the bones includes whitebait, canned sardines, pilchards and salmon help make our bones stronger because they are good sources of calcium and phosphorus If you want to make the healthier choice, remember to go for steamed, baked or grilled fish or shellfish, rather than fried. This is because frying makes fish and shellfish much higher in fat, especially if theyre cooked in batter. But this doesnt mean you need to stop having an occasional portion of fish and chips.
But dont eat too much fish Although most people should be eating more fish for their health, there are maximum levels recommended for oily fish and crab. Also, again for health reasons, adults should have no more than one portion of swordfish, shark or marlin a week. This is because these fish could contain high levels of mercury. People who eat a lot of fish every week should try to eat as wide a variety as possible not only for good health but also because of concerns about numbers of fish. Do you take supplements? If you take fish liver oil supplements, remember these are high in vitamin A. This is because fish store vitamin A in their livers. Having too much vitamin A over many years could be harmful.
If you take supplements containing vitamin A, make sure you don't have more than a total of 1.5mg a day from your food and supplements. Oily fish, shellfish and omega 3 The type of omega 3 fatty acids found in fish (theyre actually called long chain omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) help prevent heart disease. These fatty acids are also important for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding because they help a baby's nervous system to develop. Oily fish such as mackerel, sardines, trout, herring and salmon are the richest source of omega 3 fatty acids. The main shellfish sources are mussels, oysters, squid and crab. Some white fish and other shellfish also contain omega 3 fatty acids but not as much as oily fish. You can check which fish are oily and which aren't in the table below. And while youre looking at the lists, have a think about how many of these fish you usually eat. Why not try eating something different? Oily fish Anchovies Carp Eel Herring (Bloater) Hilsa Jack (also known as Scad, Horse mackerel and Trevally) Kipper (herring) Mackerel Orange roughy Pilchards Salmon Sardines Sprats Swordfish
Trout Tuna (fresh) Whitebait White Fish Brill Catfish Cod Coley Dab Dover sole Flounder Flying fish Gurnard Haddock Hake Halibut Hoki John Dory Lemon sole Ling Marlin Monkfish Pangas (also known as River cobbler, Basa or Pangasius) Parrot fish Plaice Pollack Pomfret (also known as Butterfish) Red and grey mullet Redfish (also known as Ocean perch or Rose fish) Snapper (also known as Jobfish and Red snapper) Rock salmon/Dogfish (also known as Flake, Huss, Rigg or Rock eel) Rohu (also known as Ruhi) Sea bass Sea bream (also known as Porgy) Shark Skate Tilapia Tuna (canned) Turbot Whiting Fresh tuna is an oily fish and is high in omega 3 fatty acids. But when it's canned, these fatty acids are reduced to levels similar to white fish. So, although canned tuna is a healthy choice for most people, it doesn't count as oily fish. How much oily fish? Most people should be eating more oily fish because omega 3 fatty acids are very good for the health of our hearts. However, there are recommendations for the maximum number of portions of oily fish we should be eating each
week (a portion is about 140g): 2 portions of oily fish 4 portions of oily fish Girls and women who might have a baby one day Women who wont have a baby in the future Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding Men and boys Why are there limits for oily fish? Oily fish can contain low levels of pollutants that can build up in the body. The pollutants found in oily fish include dioxins and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Dioxins and PCBs tend to be found in all foods containing fats. They have no immediate effect on health, but can be harmful because they build up in our bodies over time. The recommended maximums for oily fish are lower for most girls and women because high levels of dioxins and PCBs in the diet could affect the development of a baby in the future. If a woman changes her diet when she becomes pregnant, or when she starts trying for a baby, this won't change the levels of dioxins and PCBs that are already in her body. So it's a good idea to limit the amount of oily fish eaten from a young age. Omega 3 fatty acids are good for a baby's development so pregnant women shouldn't stop eating oily fish. So remember, don't give up eating oily fish because the health benefits outweigh the risks as long as you don't eat more than the recommended maximums. Recent surveys have shown that some other fish, as well as brown crab meat, might also have similar levels of dioxins and PCBs as oily fish. These fish are: sea bream, sea bass, turbot, halibut and rock salmon (also known as dogfish, flake, huss, rigg or rock eel). Anyone who regularly eats a lot of fish should consider choosing a wider variety and avoid eating crab and these five fish too often. Eating a wider variety of fish and shellfish will also help reduce the environmental impact. Also adults should have no more than one portion of swordfish a week. This is because it could contain high levels of mercury.

of centre Ryan Kesler, who is healthy again after hip, shoulder and wrist injuries limited his training in the past two off-seasons. Kesler spent the summer getting his body "where it needs to be." Kesler believes he and Vancouver's emotional new coach can get along. "I think we're a good fit," said Kesler. "We both want to win, we both hate losing, and I'm looking forward to the challenge." While players go through a feelingout process with Tortorella, goaltender Roberto Luongo will "just try to feel it out" when it comes to staying with the Canucks after the club indicated it would trade him in the past two offseasons. While Luongo said he could not ask for anything better than being a starter in the NHL, he has yet to express pleasure about staying in Vancouver. "I'm not saying I'm unhappy," he said. "Right now, I just want to be playing and then we'll see how it goes." Defenceman Dan Hamhuis said all the Canucks are eager for the season to start under Tortorella. Hamhuis, a 30-year-old Smithers, B.C., native said players must be mentally tough when dealing with criticism from the new coach, who pledged to implement a culture that allows players to be highly creative on offence but still play strong defence. "He's going to raise his voice and yell at us if he's not happy with our performance," said Hamhuis. "We've got to expect that and we can't get down on ourselves and get down and be upset in a way that it's going to negatively affect our play. "We have to understand that he wants the best for us, and he's not trying to put us down as individuals. He's trying to build us up." Notes: Winger David Booth remains out with an ankle injury suffered last March. General manager Mike Gillis said Booth has still not been cleared to play.
The Canucks held off-ice physical tests Wednesday at Rogers Arena and will conduct on-ice testing at the University of British Columbia on Thursday before hitting the ice for workouts back at their downtown rink Friday. Winger Zack Kassian, 22, acquired two seasons ago from Buffalo in the Cody Hodgson trade, is one player who appears likely to receive an extra push from Tortorella. The coach reached out to Kassian in the off-season in a bid to get him going early. "I want to give him every opportunity to be a huge part of this team, and I've told him that," said Tortorella. "I want to give him an opportunity because of what people have told me about him. It's something that I think the team needs as far as his willingness, as far as his playing into a bigger role within the team. I'd like to see it happen." He wants Kassian, who may get a chance to play as a top-six forward in pre-season games, "to step out of himself" and become a "big part" of the club. Kassian, who has played on all four lines without establishing a clear place, said it's up to him to show what he can do and earn a bigger role. "It's always tough when you're bouncing around on lines, but I don't want to use an excuse," said Kassian. "I need to get more consistent. Last year: Simply put, last season was disappointing, dominated by a goaltending controversy, and one that ultimately cost Alain Vigneault his job after a disastrous and brief playoff run. Yes, the Canucks won their division last season, but for a team used to regular season success and only one year removed from back-to-back Presidents Trophies, it was of little comfort. Hindsight is 20-20, but the polemic surrounding Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider should not have been allowed to continue into the 2013 season and the Canucks suffered from it. Schneider was Vigneaults preferred hand for a majority of the shortened schedule, but the pair split duty in the playoffs where the team went out again with a whimper in the first round, swept by the San Jose Sharks. For a team and a fan base expecting to compete for a Stanley Cup, last season just wasnt acceptable for the Canucks. This Year: The tale of two goaltenders was finally resolved in the offseason, but not the way that most expected. Cory Schneider - and not Roberto Luongo - exited the stage in a draft day trade with the Devils that saw the Canucks acquire the No. 9 overall pick (and select Bo Horvat). But heres the rub: the reinstallation of Luongo as the undisputed no. 1 goalie does not automatically solve the problem and remedy the situation. A lot of damage was done to the relationship between the team and Luongo over the course of the past two seasons. While Luongo wont be looking over his shoulder at new backup goalie
Jack Reddy.
under three different coaches - Chris Milicich, Neil Emblen and Paul Marshall. He is Waitakere United's second highest top scorer behind retired All White Allan Pearce and is ahead of another former West Auckland hero, Solomon Islands international Benjamin Totori. Auckland City FC chairman Ivan Vuksich expressed his delight in Krishna's signing ahead of another tough campaign. "We are delighted that Roy has decided to play for Auckland City this season. He's without doubt one of the classiest players to have competed at ASB Premiership and OFC Champions League level and I'm sure he'll prove to be a vital performer for us at the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco this December. "It's exciting times for Auckland City and for our supporters and we're all looking forward to welcoming Roy to the club," Vuksich said. With 22 international caps and 14 goals to his credit, Krishna is considered Fiji's leading marksman ahead of Osea Vakatalesau, Malakai Tiwa and the now retired Esala Masi. Krishna scored twice in Fiji's 2-0 win over the All Whites in the last FIFA World Cup campaign albeit in what was effectively a dead rubber match. He also notched the winner for Fiji in a 1-0 triumph over New Zealand 'A' at Churchill Park in Lautoka six years ago. Krishna will spearhead a formidable navy blues forward line ahead of the club's tenth anniversary season and third consecutive tilt at the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco in December.
Eddie Lack to take away playing time, the 34-year-old netminder expected to be elsewhere. Mentally, he was prepared to have moved on from this chapter in his career and start fresh in a different city. Yet, here he is back in Vancouver and fences will need to be mended and trust rebuilt. Of course, this also means that Luongo will be playing with a major chip on his shoulder in a year where hes once again eyeing a starting spot on Canadas Olympic team. An angry, motivated Luongo could be a very frightening proposition for opposing teams this season. If we thought the media circus surrounding the Canucks was entertaining before, it could reach new levels of craziness this season. No, there will no longer be the goaltending controversy that dominated the narrative for the past two seasons, but John Tortorellas notoriously contentious relationship with the media will more than make up for that. The question is, of course, whether or not Tortorella is the right man for the job. Having survived in New York as long as he did, the media spotlight in Vancouver wont be a problem, but is he the man who can take the same aging core of players that Vigneault couldnt and finally reach the ultimate goal of a Stanley Cup as their window continues to get smaller? The only new faces on the Canucks roster this season will be complementary pieces, so its going to be up to the same players who were swept last season to erase that nightmare of a playoff run and get back to whats made the Canucks one of the best teams in recent years.
