Oracle Inventory, Units of Measure Defining Unit of Measure Conversions Unit of measure conversions are numerical factors that

enable you to perform transactions in units other than the primary unit of the item being transacted. You can define: a conversion common to any item (Standard) a conversion for a specific item within a unit of measure class (Intra-class) a conversion for a specific item between unit of measure classes (Inter-class)

Examples standard 1 Dozen = 12 EA 1 Mn = 60 SECONDS

Item-specific Intra-class Conversions 1 CASE= 24 EA 1 CASE = 10 EA

Item-specific Inter-class Conversions 1.35 Millimeter = 1 GRAM 1 Millimeter = 1 Gram

First start with defining the Unit of Measure. For example, one class might be "Volume". How does your business measure "Volume" ? For example, the concrete business measures their product in cubic yards. Utilities such as a water department measures their product in gallons. These are aspects of the class known as "Volume". Another class might be "Distance". How does your business measure "Distance" ? For example, the concrete business measures distance in miles (number of miles dispatch makes a delivery to the customer). A water department may measure distance in feet or even inches (amount of pipe laid to each customer. These are all aspects of defining the Unit of Measure Classes, which is understanding the needs of the business. Most businesses need many difference classes set up, for measures such as distance, volume, time, weight, etc. Some may not be applicable. The base unit of measure is normally the smallest possible unit of measure. If the concrete company rounds off their miles, regardless and never is concerned about 1/10th of a mile, then 'mile' would be their base unit for distance. Second define your Units of Measure. A primary unit of measure must be selected as the stocking unit of measure for an item in the organization. Third define your Unit of Measure Conversions. Oracle does not know that 24 cans of soda make up a case. This is an intra-class conversion - like items. Suppose a can is the smallest unit of measure in this situation. 24 case equal a case. 12 cases equal a box. 8 boxes equal a pallet. 32 pallets equal a truck load. These are the types measures that need the to be set up for intra-class conversions for all of your items. If all of your items are cans, then this needs to be set up once. If you have many different dissimiliar items, then intra-class conversions need to be set up for each different type of item. Interclass conversions. Lets suppose that you measure your soda cans in ounces, 12 ounces to a can. But your business also ships globally where the measure is performed in milliliters. Therefore a interclass conversion needs to be set up that denotes that one fluid ounce equals 29.583 milliliters of product.

If you are in the concrete business, an you normally measure your product in cubic yards. However many of your customers need to know how many cubic yards of concrete are necessary to cover 500 square feet (with an industry standard of 4 inch thicknesss). This is an Intraclass conversion - you are converting cubic yards into square feet of product.

Define a Unit of Measure

Responsibility = Purchasing, Vision Operations Create a Unit of Measure Class 1. Navigate to the Unit of Measure Classes window.

(N) Setup > Units of Measure > Classes

2. Select your Inventory Organization. 3. Click the New icon. 4. Enter the following:

Name = XXQty Description = XX-Quantity Class Base Unit = XX-Each

UOM = XXE

5. Click Save and return to the navigator. Create Three Units of Measure 6. Navigate to the Units of Measure window.

(N) Setup > Units of Measure > Units of Measure

7. Click the New icon. 8. Enter the following:

Name = XX-Dozen UOM = XXD Description = XX Dozen UOM

Class = XXQty

9. Click Save. 10. Click the New icon. 11. Enter the following:

Name = XX-Case UOM = XXC Description = XX Case UOM Class = XXQty

12. Click Save. 13. Click the New icon. 14. Enter the following:

Name = XX- Gross UOM = XXG Description = XX Gross UOM Class = XXQty

15. Click Save and return to the navigator.

Create Conversions for Your Units of Measure 16. Navigate to the Unit of Measure Conversion window.

(N) Setup > Units of Measure > Conversions (T) Standard

17. Click the New icon. 18. Enter the following:

Unit = XX-Dozen

Conversion = 12

19. Click Save. 20. Click the New icon. 21. Enter the following:

Unit = XX-Case Conversion = 24

22. Click Save. 23. Click the New icon. 24. Enter the following:

Unit = XX-Gross Conversion = 144

25. Click Save. Now you will set up a conversion for an existing item to your newly created unit of measure. 26. Change to the Inter-class tab.

27. Click the New icon. 28. Enter the following:

29. Click Save and return to the navigator.

Defining Unit of Measure Conversions Units of measure conversion enable you to perform transactions in units other than the primary unit of the item being transacted. You can define: ? a conversion common to any item within an unit of measure class (Standard) ? a conversion for a specific item within an unit of measure class (Intra-class) ? a conversion for a specific item between unit of measure classes (Inter-class) Units of measure conversions are not organization-specific. You must define a conversion between a non-base unit of measure and the base unit of measure before you can assign the non-base unit of measure to an item. Specifying Which Conversion to Use

When you define an item you decide which type of unit of measure conversion to use: ? Item specific: Only uses units of measure conversions unique to this item. If none exist, you can only transact this item in its primary unit of measure. ? Standard: Uses standard units of measure conversions for this item if an itemspecific conversion is not available. Both: Uses both item-specific and standard unit of measure conversions. If both exist for the same unit of measure and item combination, the item-specific conversion is used. Unit of Measure Conversions during Transactions Whenever you enter an item's quantity, the default is the primary unit of measure for the item. The list of values for the unit of measure field displays all units of measure for which you have defined a standard and/or item-specific conversion. Transactions are performed in the unit of measure you specify. The conversion happens automatically and item quantities are updated in the primary unit of measure of the item.
