INTRODUCTION
This procedure has been formulated to ensure that all wastes are appropriately disposedoff, in order to protect the personnel from health hazard and to prevent environment
pollution.
This may take the form of neutralization, prior to disposal, where possible or effective
contamination is not possible.
2.0
SCOPE
The procedure applies to all areas of Medgulf operations, where there is a requirement to
dispose non-hazardous and hazardous waste.
3.0

4.0
DEFINITIONS
4.1
Waste
All discharges of solids, liquids and gases to the environment, for which there is no
economic demand and which is not possible to prevent at source, recover or recycled.
4.2
Non-Hazardous Waste
The waste, which is disposed, does not pose any adverse effects, either to people, or to,
the environment and its wild life.
4.3
Hazardous Waste
Any waste, which due to its quantity, chemical or infections characteristics has the
potential to cause environmental problems to air, water, ground, people, plant life or wild
life.
5.0
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1
Project Manager
The Project Manager is responsible for ensuring that the requirements of this procedure
are fully implemented at project level. He is also responsible for ensuring that
Supervisors are aware of, and understand the contents of this procedure further more,

Supervisor
Supervisors at all levels have a responsibility to ensure, that the requirements of this
procedure are followed. They also have a responsibility to give training, by way of
Toolbox Talk, on the subject.
5.3
HSE Officer
He has the responsibility to give some general guidance, to all new persons joining the
Company, by way of the Safety Orientation Courses. He is also responsible for giving
general advice to Management, and Supervisors on the subject of Waste Disposal.
6.0
TRAINING
The Site Staff at all levels will receive Training and adequate information on the Waste
Management. This can be achieved in the form of information, at safety inductions
given by Safety Professional, and by way of Toolbox Talk, from supervision. If
required, Senior Management will organize more intensive and specific Training on
Management of Waste issues, through external source.
7.0
7.1
Domestic Waste
All Offices and Camps will be provided with Waste Bins, with Lid to collect the
generated wastes. The wastes will, then be collected in plastic Bags, and kept at a
designated collection area.
Food wastes from Mess will be collected in plastic closeable Bin, which will be emptied
regularly into the general non-hazardous waste rubbish skips. These Bins will be
washed out thoroughly, on a daily basis. Rubbish skips, will be removed and emptied by
an approved Waste Carrier, as and when required.
7.2
DISPOSAL
Non-Hazardous Industrial Waste may be disposed-off, in the same manner as
normal domestic waste.

SCRAP METALS
Scrap metals will be segregated, for later removal by Scrap Buyer / Reprocessing
Company.
7.2.3
PLASTIC DRUMS
When disposing-off plastic drums, ensure that they are rendered unusable by
puncturing. They may then be disposed-off, as normal non-hazardous waste.
Plastic drums, which have hazardous substances, cannot be disposed-off in this
way and must be disposed-off as hazardous waste, if the residual content cannot
be neutralized.
7.2.4
SCRAP WOOD
Scrap Wood will first be assessed, for possible recycling prior to disposal. Any
wood, which cannot be reused, will be disposed-off, as normal non-hazardous
domestic waste.
7.2.5
BUILDINGS WASTE
Buildings waste like concrete, used building materials, empty cement bags etc.
will be segregated, then disposed-off, as non-hazardous waste via an approved
Waste Carrier.

Clinical Waste
Clinical Wastes will be stored in appropriate containers, which will be labelled as a
Biohazard, and will be deposited at an approved clinical waste handling facility. The
disposal facility may be either Client supplied or a locally licensed Agency.
9.0
RECORDS
A Hazardous Waste Consignment Note, with specific information, will accompany any
hazardous waste transported and details of this will be entered in a Register. Also have a
responsibility for ensuring that those involved in the transportation and handling of waste
understand all the applicable requirements.
