Township
seeks bids
on liquor
license
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Medford Township is putting
the now closed Beau Rivage
liquor license to bid Oct. 3 with a
starting price of $600,000, in addi-
tion to bringing two more licens-
es to the table.
According to township manag-
er Chris Schultz, the license has
been inactive for a long time and
the state deemed it dead.
According to councilman
James Randy Pace, the council
reviewed what the last license
sold for and compared it to sur-
rounding townships for what
they sold for, landing them at
$600,000.
You always run the risk that
no one is going to bid that
amount. In the event we dont re-
ceive any, well consider lowering
it to $500,000, Pace said. That
part of the equation is moot per
getting bids on the license.
The hope is that someone will
bid for it, Schultz said. Its a
one-time revenue, hopefully an

Bid for license goes out Oct. 3
and will be returned sealed
opportunity for a developer to put
in a restaurant. The overall strat-
egy is to attract businesses.
According to Schultz and Pace,
a member of the Medford Village
East Associates is currently car-
rying two licenses.
According to township offi-
cials, the member has been re-
newing in hope to use them for a
project, which never got off the
ground.
The intent was when he con-
structed the commercial project,
he was going to have a restaurant
portion, Schultz said. Its been
on the table for more than 10
years and nothing has been
done.
The township plans to chal-
lenge the renewal to put them up
for bid as well.
The goal is to bring in a tax
ratable that benefits the township
as well as growing local busi-
ness, Pace said.
According to Pace, ratables are
generally about 80 percent resi-
dential and 20 percent commer-
cial in most towns. Medford is
running 94 residential to 6 per-
cent commercial ratables.
He is hoping putting the licens-
es out to bid will draw more busi-
nesses into town.
We still have a long way to
go, Pace said. But it wont
change what the town is. We
wont turn into Cherry Hill to at-
tract businesses.
Pace emphasized Medford is a
family-friendly town and will re-
main as such, no matter the dis-
course of businesses coming into
town.
Additionally, Medford is part of
the Pinelands, and there are re-
strictions with commercial
growth.
Right now its just a matter of
waiting and seeing what the re-
sponses are, Pace said.
Residents are reacting positive-
ly to the possibility of a new es-
tablishment with the ability to
serve alcohol.
Whats great about this coun-
try is we have a great variety of
choices every day, Pace said. We
have a lot of great places to eat
and that serve alcohol, but more
places to choose from is what the
residents are after.
Pace noted the township is not
after building a discotheque, but
theres nothing wrong with enjoy-
ing a beverage with friends not
to excess.
The bid goes out Oct. 3 and will
be returned sealed.

B-Thrifty II Boutique to close
after 30 years of business
It is with many regrets I inform you that
the Virtua West Jersey Auxiliary Board
has made a decision to close B-Thrifty II
Boutique after 30 years on Main Street in
Medford. We know what an integral part of
Main Street we were. Anyone who was
strolling along would drop into our great
and unique store and would end up with a
delightful purchase.
The manager and all staff were dedicat-
ed volunteers who gave tirelessly, some for
the last 20 to 25 years, faithfully attending
to our consignors and customers, giving of
themselves many long, hard working
hours.
Every year, sales were up from the year
before, and 2013 was our best year ever. We
could never have been so successful with-
out our generous consignors and very loyal
customers. Many thanks to all. You came
in as strangers and ended up as friends,
which made our shop great social fun. We
felt like we were the Cheers of Medford.
Many thanks to all the customers, con-
signors and volunteers for the countless
wonderful friends we have made. We will
miss you all.

T
eachers are the backbone of a
school. They are the people
who shape our childrens edu-
cation, who help guide them through
their formative years to bigger and
better things.
A school, or school district, is only
as good as its teachers. Shiny build-
ings, the latest technology, extra-cur-
ricular offerings, a forward-thinking
administration and a supportive com-
munity would be meaningless without
good teachers.
Good teachers are the reason why
our school district is high performing,
which, in turn, is why families move
to our town.
Good teachers are the reason for
success at the next level, too. New Jer-
sey universities scored high in recent
national and regional rankings, and
their teachers are a main reason.
Princeton University was named the
No. 1 university in the nation, accord-
ing to the U.S. News & World Report.
In the North Regional rankings, the
College of New Jersey was No. 5,
Rider University and Rowan Universi-
ty tied for No. 18, and Rutgers Univer-
sity-Camden was No. 24.
Because of their value, teachers de-
serve to be treated well. They deserve
to be thanked. They deserve that apple
the kids bring them. They deserve to
be recognized and honored.
They deserve to be paid fairly, and
thats exactly what is happening lately.
The New Jersey School Boards As-
sociation recently reported that the de-
cline in pay raises is leveling off. For
settled contracts as of last spring, the
average pay increase for teachers was
2.25 percent. Thats slightly less than
the 2.37 percent average increase for
the 2012-2013 school year and a lot less
than the 4.5 percent average of five
years ago, but its still solid and much
higher than the historic lows of the
last few years.
Its good to see the teachers get what
they deserve. They deserve raises
higher than the current 1.4 percent
cost-of-living increase. They deserve to
be taken care of, as long as its not out
of whack with the rest of the working
world.
Its unfortunate that people and
health benefits are one of the biggest
costs of running our local school dis-
trict, and therefore, are one of the
biggest drivers of increased taxes.
But thats not their fault. Teachers
cant be punished for that, and more
importantly, our children cant be pun-
ished for that. We need good teachers.
in our opinion
We need good teachers
And to get good teachers, we have to pay for good teachers

Walk-a-Thon set for Sept. 21
Gather your friends, kids and
co-workers and come out for a
fun-filled walk on Saturday, Sept.
21 at 9:30 a.m., when the
Deborah Hospital Foundation
kicks off its third Annual Walk-a-
Thon to benefit Deborah Heart
and Lung Center, the regions pre-
mier heart, lung and vascular
hospital.
This year Deborahs 2.5-mile
Walk-a-Thon has a new location
scenic Freedom Park in Medford
and a new companion event, a 5K
run through the center of down-
town Medford Township, sure to
please all the area runners.
Race start is 9 a.m. on Union
Street.
Each year that the Deborah
Hospital Foundations Bohlen Mt.
Holly, Medford, and Home Chap-
ters have hosted the walk the
event has grown.
Last years 270 walkers and 60
sponsors raised $15,000 for Debo-
rah Heart and Lung Center,
which in 91 years has never billed
a patient.
Deborah Patient Care Techni-
cian Laralee Remson is one of
those with specific fundraising
goals.
I am hoping to raise $500,
Remson said, but I expect to sur-
pass that. I have a strong relation-
ship with my Deborah patients,
and I know that what I am doing
will give back to them the most. I
love being a part of Deborah.
Walk/Run Event Coordinator
Doreen Liller is appreciative of
the efforts of all those who sup-
port the event.
We could not put on such a
successful day without our le-
gions of supporters, Liller said.
I am excited this year to exceed
last years total, and I am very ex-
cited about our new venue in
Medford and the addition of our
run. I am eagerly anticipating a
large turnout of walkers and run-
ners.
Pre-registration for both the
walk and run is $20.
Registration the day-of-the
event is $25.
All participants will receive a
gift bag and post-race/walk re-
freshments.
Medals will be awarded in the
5K run for first overall male and
female; top 3 males and females
according to age group (14 and
under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-
59, and 60+) and the top male and
female Deborah employees.
For more information, or ad-
vance registration, call Doreen
Liller at (609) 893-3372 ext. 8001, e-
mail dliller@deborahfounda-
tion.org, or visit www.deborah-

Zombie Car Wash
scheduled for Sept. 28
Visit the Zombie Car Wash
presented by Medford Auto Body
in conjunction with Psycho Trail
on Sept. 28 from noon-4 p.m.
All proceeds are to benefit the
Medford Vincentown Rotarys
Annual Halloween Parade, sched-
uled for Oct. 26.
The Halloween Parade has
been voted the second biggest
event in Medford.
As of last year, the Rotary has
had its local funding removed.
All funding for the parade is
now being collected through do-
nations and fundraisers.
Psycho Trail has been voted
South Jerseys No. 1 haunted
house and is located in Medfords
Freedom Park.
A zombie car wash is just what
it sounds like. Volunteers dress
up like zombies and wash cars.
However, if you have ever seen a
zombie movie, you know they do
not move quickly and are less
than coordinated.
The zombies do not do a good
job of washing cars and mostly
just grunt and groan about brains
while they flail around soap and
water, kick over buckets and use
severed hands to attempt to wash
your car. This will prove to be
more of a show than a car wash.
Price is by donation.

BOE approves contract
with teachers, staff
The Lenape Regional High
School District Board of Educa-
tion in a special meeting Monday,
Sept. 9, unanimously approved a
three-year employment contract
with the Lenape District Educa-
tion Association.
The LDEA, which represents
approximately 850 teachers and
other certificated staff, including
school counselors, child study
team professionals, media spe-
cialists, nurses and athletic train-
ers, as well as administrative sup-
port staff, interpreters and para-
professionals, ratified the con-
tract on Sept. 4.
The three-year agreement in-
cludes an average salary increase
of 2.3 percent and was updated to
be compliant with current
statutes governing public employ-
ee contributions to health insur-
ance.
"It was important to get the
contract negotiations behind us
and start off the new school year
in the right frame of mind, said
LRHSD Board Member John
Heitmann Jr., who chairs the ne-
gotiations committee. "The staff
worked well with us to get this
done. And, the students and com-
munity will continue to benefit
from the quality teachers, staff
and programs the Lenape District
is known for.
According to LDEA President
John Faubl, the contract received
overwhelming support from the
associations members.
"Approving the agreement at
the start of the school year is a
big morale boost for our mem-
bers. We take great pride in our
work, and now we can put all of
our energies into teaching, in-
stead of negotiating a contract,
Faubl said.
Walk/Run planned
for Sept. 28 at park
The St. Mary of the Lakes
youth group, Youth Energized in
the Spirit, is hosting this years
Friends of the Poor Walk/Run at
Freedom Park in Medford on Sat-
urday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to
noon.
Walkers and runners can regis-
ter for the event now at www.fop-
walk.org and are encouraged to
secure donations for their efforts
from friends, family members,
neighbors and coworkers.
Funds raised by participants
will benefit the Medford Confer-
ence of the Society of Saint Vin-
cent de Paul, which offers person-
to-person service to those in need
in Medford, Medford Lakes,
Browns Mills, Pemberton,
Moorestown and the surrounding
area.
The day will include food and
music, and participants are invit-
ed to walk with their pets.
To volunteer for the event, con-
tact Linda Xerri at lxerri@sml-
parish.org or 609-654-2546, x311,
by Sept. 20.
The Friends of the Poor
Walk/Run is a national program
coordinated by the national
SVDP office. The inaugural event
took place in 2008. Last year, the
Friends of the Poor Walk/Run
raised more than $1.8 million
through the efforts of more than
19,000 walkers at 220 different lo-
cations in the United States.
Police implement
S.T.R.E.E.T. program
The Medford Township Police
Department will once again im-
plement an innovative law en-
forcement initiative to expand
upon the long-standing commit-
ment to the schools, parents and
especially the children of Med-
ford Township.
The S.T.R.E.E.T. Initiative
(Safety, Traffic, Response, En-
forcement, Education and Train-
ing) is designed to create a safer
environment for the children in
the areas adjacent to the schools.
The goal of the S.T.R.E.E.T. Ini-
tiative is to extend the safety of
our children through the imple-
mentation of proactive initiatives
designed to safeguard children
from possible harmful situations
while traveling to and from
school.
The Medford Township Police
Department will maximize the
cooperative efforts of the current
School Resource Unit, the Patrol
Bureau, the Criminal Investiga-
tive Bureau and the Traffic Unit
to accomplish the mission.
Highlights and goals of the ini-
tiative include increasing pres-
ence of marked patrol units in the
areas adjacent to schools; increas-
ing education and enforcement of
motor vehicle laws in targeted
areas adjacent to township
schools, i.e.: parking, pedestrian
safety, seat belt enforcement,
school zone speed enforcement,
through the utilization of special
designated S.T.R.E.E.T. patrol
units; decrease the number of
motor vehicle accidents in areas
immediately adjacent to schools;
and utilize video message boards
and social media outlets to focus
the communitys awareness to
the importance of a safe school
environment.
The program will also assist in
disseminating information de-
signed to ensure the proper use of
bicycle safety helmets.
Our children are our commu-
nitys most valuable asset. We
have found that one of the most
effective ways to protect them is
to take a multifaceted approach to
provide them a safe and secure
environment both inside and out-
side of their schools, Police
Chief Richard Meder said.
This is yet another communi-
ty policing initiative in which the
police department works closely
with our partners in the schools
and the community to improve
quality of life issues.
