What do actuaries do?

Actuaries are business professionals who deal with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. They have a deep understanding of finance and model the world around them, evaluating the likely impact of future events.

Their advice is essential to many industries, including banking and investments, insurance, healthcare and pensions, where a single decision can have a major financial impact or affect hundreds of thousands of people. Therefore, the skills of an actuary are highly respected and sought after, and qualifying is not easy. What is the Actuarial Profession?
The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries is the membership body for actuaries based in the UK and internationally. It is known as the Actuarial Profession and represents its members externally and oversees their education at all stages of qualification and through their careers and looks to expand actuarial knowledge. taking our professional exams. This usually takes between three and six years. If you have a degree or full time post-graduate qualification in a numerate subject, you may be exempt from some of our exams.

How to become an actuary Life as an actuary

Studying for the professional exams is very demanding, although most employers provide study leave, as well as help with tuition fees. However, it can prove very rewarding as it is a very satisfying and stimulating career. It offers intellectual challenge, an influential role and an excellent salary. It is very diverse and the skills that you will gain from undertaking the qualification can take you anywhere in the world. It makes sense to experience first hand whats involved, by doing a work placement. This also gives you a chance to meet and chat to working actuaries, and will stand you in good stead if you then decide to pursue a career as an actuary. You can apply for a work placement by sending your CV and a covering letter to a company listed in this booklet, or by completing their own application form. Your school or university careers service may also have information on work experience vacancies.
