Assignments:
Two required books: Friedens Global Capitalism and Oatleys International Political Economy. Other readings on the course website. Three multiple-choice exams. Final is cumulative (kind of). One 5,000 paper. Details TK, but it is intended to be a research paper.
Roughly 100 pp of reading per week and you really have to keep up. Plus some quite basic math. Basically high school algebra. (If you cant hack that this class probably isnt for you.)

No formal attendance policy, but I may give quizzes which will be averaged into your exam grade. Exams are mandatory, of course.
Laptops/tablets: Open, but should be used for class-related stu (note-taking, reading PDFs, etc.)
Sleeping: Come on now. Theres no attendance... just dont come if you dont want to be here. As always you are bound by the CODE.

Well begin each class discussing events ongoing in the world. Its an interesting time to study IPE so there should be a lot of talk about. In order to have this conversation, however, you have to be informed. Pick a source for news. I dont care what. NY Times, BBC, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Der Spiegel, RealClearWorld.com, etc. I subscribe to some e-mail lists ForeignPolicy.coms Morning Brief and Washington Posts Wonkbook so that ten minutes after I wake up I know the major developments of the day. There are many of these and I recommend using them.

Obviously they are inter-linked, and aspects of all will creep into each section.

The global system is hierarchical. The global system is institutionalized. The global system is interconnected.
Citizens of states compete over the distribution of a societys resources. States compete over the distribution of the worlds resources.
Institutions lter this competition at the domestic and international levels. Power is important.
