Preface

Tourism is a multi-faceted phenomenon, which involves movement to and stays in destinations outside the normal place of residence. Man has been a confirmed traveler since ancient times - a nomad - as travelling has been a characteristic feature of human society and lifestyle. The excursions made by travelers help to discover the new places around the globe. Travel in early times is synonymous with the modern day tourism. Tourism is an ever - expanding service industry with latent vast growth potential and has, therefore, become one of the crucial concern of not only the nations but also international as a whole. It is being perceived as an important instrument of economic development. The two aspects of tourism - its capacity to generate employment both directly as well as indirectly, and its potential to earn had international for the host country - have made this industry greatly desirable for all concerned: governments, entrepreneurs and people in general. It has come, therefore, increasingly to occupy a place of important not only for the business sector but also for the concerned academic and management institutions. The main elements in the process of tourism are man, space and time. Infact, in a significant sense, it is new of the most of the influential phenomenon in the economic and social development of society. There is hardly another economic sector, which generate as many added values, employment and foreign exchange and that also at such a low cost as tourism. The economic significance of tourism is well brought out by the statistics / figures of the world tourism and travel council (WTTC) and John Naisbaitt in his book Global Paradox as it contributes 10.2% to world GDP, 10.7% of capital investment, employs 10.6% of global work force, accounts for 10.9% of all consumer spending and 6.9% of all government spending.

Conclusion

In the end of the report I would like to conclude that travel intermediaries in Shimla play an important role in the tourism industry in the area and area surrounding. During my survey I use primary method of data collection. The study also gives a view about the locals as their educational qualification, occupation and annual income, income generated through tourism. The study also shows the difference generate by tourism industry in peak season and off season. The study gives us a view of Economic impacts of tourism on locals and travel intermediaries. The tourism industry generates substantial economic benefits to both host countries and tourism tourists home countries. Especially in developing countries, one of the primary motivations for a region to promote itself as a tourism destination is the expected economic improvement. As with other impacts, this massive economic development brings along both positive and negative consequences. Tourism affects the society at a large. Some of the positive and negative impacts of tourism are as social understanding, increase the educational opportunities and development of infrastructure. During this research I got the opportunity to interact with the local people of Shimla. People of these areas are very cooperative and hard working. The study

proved useful as in the end I could say that Shimla have a great tourist potential but due to the negligence given in actual by the govt, in the state and the centre there was an unplanned growth which is a major for which area has to pay. Once again I would like to thank my teachers for giving me the topic which is of the great issue and really needs some attention. They also helped us in preparing the questionnaire which the major source of primary data for the study.
