BELGRADE
is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Its name translates to White city. The city proper has a population of over 1.2 million; 1.65 million people live within the administrative limits, making it one of the largest cities of Southeastern Europe.

NIS
is the largest city of southern Serbia and the thirdlargest city in Serbia (after Belgrade and Novi Sad). It is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and Europe, and has from ancient times been considered a gateway between the East and the West. It is the birthplace of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor and the founder of Constantinople. It is home to one of Serbia's oldest churches, dating to the 4th century, located in the suburb of Mediana. In 2013 the city will host the celebration of 1700 years of Constantine's Edict of Milan. The town was named after the Niava River, which flows through the city.

NOVI SAD
is the second largest city in Serbia, the administrative seat of the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. The city was founded in 1694, when Serb merchants formed a colony across the Danube from the Petrovaradin fortress, a Habsburg strategic military post. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it became an important trading and manufacturing centre, as well as a centre of Serbian culture of that period, earning the nickname Serbian Athens. The city was heavily devastated in the 1848 Revolution, but it was subsequently restored. Today, Novi Sad is an industrial and financial centre of the Serbian economy, as well as a major cultural center.

KRAGUJEVAC
is the fourth largest city in Serbia, the main city of the umadija region and the administrative centre of umadija District. It is situated on the banks of the river Lepenica. the city has a population of 150,835 inhabitants, while administrative area has a population of 179,417. Kragujevac was the first capital of modern Serbia (18181839), and the first constitution in the Balkans was proclaimed in this city in 1835. Further on, the first full- fledged university in the newly independent Serbia was founded in 1838, preceded by the first grammar school (Gimnazija), Printworks (both in 1833), professional National theatre (1835) and the Military academy (1837).

The town has a favorable geographical position, which is featured by the vicinity of a number of important traffic routes, such as Ibarska highway and the railroad line Belgrade - Bar. Michael I. Pupin, was a Serbian physicist and physical chemist. Pupin is best known for his numerous patents, including a means of greatly extending the range of longdistance telephone communication by placing loading coils (of wire) at predetermined intervals along the transmitting wire (known as "pupinization"). Pupin was a founding member of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) on March 3, 1915, which later became NASA.

Novak Djokovic is a Serbian professional tennis player who is ranked World No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He is considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

CURRENCY

The official tender in Serbia is dinar, abbreviated RSD. Money may be exchanged in all banks and post offices, as well as in authorized exchange offices. Dinar is issued in denominations of 10/20/50/100/200/500/1000/5000.

Public telephone booths (Halo govornice) are activated by Halo cards worth RSD 200 or 300, each offering a free call credit of RSD 15. The sales price is written on the card, which is also the value of the credit for making calls. Halo cards may be purchased on kiosks, post offices and in retail stores.

AFTER YOU ARRIVE...

From airport- Belgrade Airport to Belgrade Bus/Train Station: Belgrade airport is 15km from the centre of Belgrade. One bus stop is next to Terminal 1 and the other one is in the front of the Arrivals entrance. Bus line #72 runs twice an hour (quarter past and quarter to each hour) to Zeleni Venac in the city centre, and costs 170 din ars (~1.50) from the driver or 80 dinars from the shop inside the departure hall that sells food and newspapers. The bus station for #72 is on the departures level. The trip is around 45 minutes. A more comfortable city-bus option is the A1 minibus, going from the airport to Slavija Square in the city center, stopping at Fontana (Novi Beograd) and the Main Train Station. The buses are comfortable and air-conditioned. The fare is RSD 300 (~2.67) as of December 2012, which is paid on -board; be sure to tell the driver what your destination is before departure.
