The Essential Beliefs of Christians by Dr. C. Roy Stauffer, Minister of Church Life
Back in the year 1910, a wealthy layman in California paid for the publication of what he called "The Essential Beliefs of Christianity." These beliefs were published by the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. Basically, it said a "true Christian" would have to literally believe in the following: 1. The inspiration of Scripture 2. The Fall of Man 3. The Virgin Birth of Christ 4. The Deity of Christ 5. The Substitute Atonement of Christ 6. The Physical Resurrection of Christ 7. The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit 8. The Second Coming of Christ 2. Love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31; Romans 13:8-10; I John 3:23; I John 4:7-8 3. Forgive others and give them a second chance, as God forgives us. Matthew 5:7; 18:21-22 4. Care for others, especially the less fortunate. Luke 4:18; Galatians 2:10; Ephesians 6:12 5. Comfort those in sorrow. II Corinthians 1:4; 2:7; I Thessalonians 4:18 6. Pray for one another. James 5:13-16; I Timothy 2:1 7. Be a peacemaker. Matthew 5:9; Ephesians 4:3

These basic beliefs, and a good number of others they 8. Trust and obey. added over the next five years, became the litmus test of who Acts 5:29; II Corinthians 10:7; Hebrews 11:1; is and who isn't a true Christian. And they have become the Matthew 7:21; 16:16 source of much debate and controversy ever since then. Very conservative and fundamentalist Christians want to uphold 9. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. them. Others see it somewhat differently. For example, Matthew 7:12 what exactly does the inspiration of Scripture mean? There 10. Be humble. have been a number of different responses from different Matthew 5:3,5 Christians. The same thing is true with understanding the "Fall of Man." When it comes to the death of Jesus on the We should build on what we can all agree upon, not that Cross, there are other theories of the atonement (what which causes arguments and divisions. And why wouldn't we happened when Jesus died to unite God and humans) besides build it on what Jesus taught us, not what some rich layman the "Substitutionary" atonement theory. When and what can pay to publish. will the Second Coming of Christ be all about? Even fundamentalist Christians disagree on this one. Some are Just a thought. known as "pre-millennialists." Others as "post-millennialists," ~Roy and some are even known as "A-millennialists." (You'll have to look those up if you want to know more. I don't have room here to go into it. Because of the debates and divisions which have come throughout Christian history over what is "right belief" (i.e. creeds, doctrines, theologies, etc.), we in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) have always said "no creed but Christ." Our only "test of fellowship" or who is and who isn't a Christian is whether or not they believe in Jesus Christ. Then we'll even agree to disagree as to how we understand Jesus as the Christ But if I were to present a list of "fundamentals," or the Essential Beliefs of Christians, this would be my list: 1. Love God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. Mark 12:30; Matthew 22:37; Luke 10:27

Welcome to our Youth Sponsors! by Rev. Trey Flowers, Minister of Youth & "The Bridge"

as well as to check in with them each week during youth group on Wednesday nights. Having good youth sponsors is vital for building on our youth group's strong foundation. Clay often talks about how people are like Lego blocks in that we only have so many meaningful relationships we can fit on the pegs of our blocks. Once our "blocks" are full, we might lose touch with other people we used to connect with. Youth sponsors allow us to multiply the number of meaningful connections and mentorships that take place within the youth group. While Carla and I will get to know and love each member of the youth group, having youth sponsors in place means there are really sixteen loving adults that can connect with our students.

Please join us in celebrating BenSaunders a new and important ministry at CarolineMcDonald our church: the youth sponsors DardenCopeland program. Fourteen adults JeremiahPyron varying in ages, beliefs, JohnStauffer interests, personalities, and Katie Johnson church backgrounds have KristenNewman committed the next year to MaryClarePyron serving in this vital role. It is a fun and rewarding ministry, but MerillatFlowers these volunteer leaders will NanGeorge also need your love, prayers, NatalieCopeland and support as they offer the RobCochran same to the youth of our SaraAnneQuinn church. You are invited to StephenQuinn help "sponsor a sponsor" by reaching out to the people who have volunteered to serve as a youth sponsor.

These fourteen youth sponsors are brave, compassionate, and loving people. They represent our church extraordinarily well, but more importantly they represent the love of Jesus Christ to every student in our youth group. For the next fourteen weeks, we will run a "sponsor spotlight" on the youth page in The Spire to lift up one sponsor. Please join me in celebrating these amazing volunteers each week through notes of encouragements, prayers, smiles in the hallway, and Being a youth sponsor is a big commitment. Individuals all of the other compassionate ways our church reaches out to were nominated by a member of the church, filled out an people. application, and upon selection signed a covenant committing their time, energy, and spirit to Woodmont's youth. Over the next year, these individuals are giving up two hours every Wednesday night to lead the youth group through service projects, small groups, worship, and fellowship. Additionally, they are invited to participate in special events such as weekend retreats and mission trips. Sponsors are also assigned 5-10 youth to "shepherd" through middle school and high school to be the first to know about family deaths, big tests, important recitals and games, etc.

I remember feeling anxious that week, not really knowing how much of the afternoon we had left. It wasn't as though there was any real pressure to do anything at camp other than just to be present, and yet I found myself wresting with such pressing questions as "How much longer is rest time?" and "When is dinner?"

I don't know that I've ever viewed time quite the same since that week. I don't have it figured out, by any means, but I try to be mindful of time-- mine and other people's. Still, I recognize that in the blink of an eye, circumstances can change. While dreaming and planning for the future is important, it's also equally important to live in the now, and enjoy the gift of the present.

Sponsor Spotlight
We have 14 amazing youth sponsors signed up to lead the youth group this year. Please join us in thanking our youth sponsors as they give their time and talents to the 6th-12th grade youth in our church. This week, please take some extra time to celebrate and get to know Natalie Copeland. Natalie joined Woodmont Christian Church this past year after visiting for a while. She loves Woodmont and is so excited to be involved in the youth group! Natalie is a registered nurse and is currently in her master's program to be a family nurse practitioner. Her husband, Darden Copeland, is also a youth sponsor this year. In her spare time (which isn't often between school and work), Natalie loves to hang out with friends and family, travel, cook and watch movies.

I hope that this Thursday, September 19th, will turn out to be a beautiful day for a wagon trip around the community (the wagon tour lasts 1.5 hours and the wagon does have shocks and rubber tires!), and lunch at the one and only restaurant in town. Homemade pies are available by the slice or just buy one to eat later. We will have the opportunity to purchase fresh produce and other items. (I'll be bringing home some sourdough bread.) The Amish Country Mall will have lots of crafts and food items for sale, and we'll have time to look at the newly acquired Caboose and the Ethridge Museum. If you would like to join us for this day trip, please call or email Carol Parsons at 457-3006 or parsons.carol@comcast.net. The trip will cost $12 plus lunch. Our bus will hold 13 people. Just a note: Traveling Woodmont is the name we use for a group that is open to all. The purpose of the group is to strengthen personal relationships and have a good time together in the process. Occasionally we take a day trip or a longer trip. Suggestions for trips are always welcome. Join us when you can!
