Penny Farthing revisited

THIS year sees the 40th anniversary of the
opening of the Penny Farthing folk club which
used to meet every Sunday evening at The
Travellers Rest in Little Sutton.
The club opened its doors on the 16th
November 1969 and at its peak had a
membership in excess of two thousand, with
regular full house audiences in the region of
120.
Guest singers included, in no particular order,
Ralph McTell, Martin Carthy, Christie Moore,
Barbara (then Babs) Dickson, Willie Russell,
Leon Rosselson, Diz Disley, and many more
‘big names’ in folk music.
To mark the occasion “40 years on” the original Penny Farthing duo of Les Jones and
Russ Dumbill along with Andy Chrimes, who took over in 1970 when a change of career
caused Les to move away from the area, are planning a reunion concert to take place on
Saturday 15th November, 8pm, at the Boat Museum, in Ellesmere Port. A fourth member,
Grant Dawson is now living in Canada but has remained in touch and who knows....
Many of the local singers who visited and performed at the club are still playing today
and attempts are currently taking place to contact everyone who was involved in the early
days.
Many will remember The Penny Farthing folk group thanks to their efforts in May 1969
in aid of the Liverpool University Biafra famine appeal, by singing a couple of songs in
every pub and club within the borough of Ellesmere Port in seven days, raising a grand
total of £90.00 together with the proceeds of a charity concert held and sponsored by The
Waverley club on the final night.
The club ran its own football team which played in the Ellesmere Port and District
Sunday Senior league division one; and a ladies five-a-side team which participated twice
in the borough sports festival at Whitby park.
Much of the success of the club was down to enthusiasm, yet it has to be said, The
Pioneer played a major part in its success, publicising all the events, courtesy of their
COMMUNITY

(then young) reporter, Kevin Tee, without whose input ‘the word’ may not have spread so
quickly.
Further details of the commemorative concert will, of course, be publicised but anyone
with interest, comments or suggestions can contact Russ on (0151) 339 6604 or 336
2794 or by email to carpetsbyrussell@hotmail.com

IAN Prowse is to reform his old band Pele for two shows this summer.
Ian, who is the front man for Ellesmere Port band Amsterdam, is reuniting the five

The original members will play together for the first time in 16 years this summer to
recreate those glorious shows between 1991-1995.
All five are getting together one more time to re-live those sweaty nights at the Royal
Court, Irish Centre, Adelphi Ballroom and Mountford Hall.

Police hunt for fly tipping duo

caught on camera
CHESHIRE West and Chester Council is asking for information in relation to a fly-
tipping incident in Ellesmere Port.
Two men were filmed dumping waste in Stanney Mill Lane, Little Stanney, on 10th
May. The video evidence clearly shows the men unloading wheelie bins from a
white van, registration OV51 HNA, and dumping the contents on the side of a road
near Junction 10 of the M53.
The first man is of slim build with brown hair and is wearing a checked shirt and
jeans. The second man has greying hair and is wearing a black t-shirt and jeans.
The video can be viewed on the Council’s YouTube Channel at: www.youtube.com/
cheshirewest
Cllr Neil Ritchie, Environment Portfolio Holder, explained: “I would urge anyone who
knows these men, or thinks they have seen them, to contact us. This can be done
anonymously and any information will be treated in the strictest of confidence.”
He added: “Unfortunately checks on the vehicle have not helped us to identify
them, so information about the white van would also be helpful to the investigation.
Perhaps you owned it previously, or have seen a similar van acting suspiciously in
your area?
“However insignificant you think your information it might be, I would urge you to
make contact.”

HEALTH AND BEAUTY

Q. I have unwanted facial hairs. Is electrolysis

permanent?
A. Yes it most certainly is! However, there
are a variety of factors which influence the
effectiveness of electrolysis. Firstly, the
skill of the operator – electrolysis is a very
skilled technique which takes a long time
to perfect so always visit a well-qualified
and experienced practitioner for this
treatment. Secondly, ‘permanent’ should
not be confused with ‘instant’ – many people
assume that the treatment will quickly solve
their hair growth problems, but electrolysis
does take time to be effective so be patient and
stick to your treatment plan as advised by your
therapist. Thirdly, the cause of your hair growth
problems and how you have been removing the
hairs previously will have an enormous influence
on how effective the treatment is so ensure that you

JULY IN YOUR GARDEN

Gardening by Janet Heath
HOPEFULLY this summer will be sunny so we can enjoy our gardens whether it is dining outside
or just lounging about in the sun.
Some herbs are great for adding to summer cooking. Mint is wonderful when added to Pimms
and lemonade or pop a sprig in the pan when cooking new potatoes or peas. There are many
different varieties of mint but grow in a pot or confined to an area where it can be contained, as
many of them will invade your garden.
In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts. Sow
salads and French beans for a late crop. Do net fruit such as strawberries and blueberries. I tried
to grow blueberries last year and had a crop developing nicely until the birds ate every one just
before they ripened! Raspberries seem to be largely immune probably as the fruit is not so easy
for birds to eat.
July is a great month for perennials and many come in bright colours so take a trip to your local
garden centre or visit some of our wonderful gardens to see what is doing well in July.
Achilleas are sun-loving flowering plants that come in a range of colours from yellow, orange
and red. Anthemis with yellow or white daisy flowers will continue into August or even September
if you cut off the dead flowers. Crocosmia are also at their best in July with their sword shaped
leaves and spikes of red, yellow or orange flowers. They may well need some support.
Cooler colours of white and blue often come to life in the evening and seem to have an inner
glow in fading light. Try white dahlias with their varied flower shapes. Many hardy geraniums have
white or blue flowers and some varieties will often flower twice if the first flowers are cut off after
flowering. The same also applies to Centaurea Montana the perennial cornflower.
Hydrangreas are one of the best shrubs for flowering in July with a range of flower shapes from
delicate lacecap to huge mopheads and some with cones shaped flowers. They prefer moist soil
and will take light shade but will also grow in full sun. Give them enough space to grow. They
flower on last years wood so if you cut them back, you may not have flowers the next year.
