EVALUATION A. DEFINITION 1. Evaluation 1.

1 is decision making or judgment based on information gathered through measurement like test (PRODED LAC, Episode 2). 1.2 widens the areas to be studied to include subjective opinions and qualitative changes as well as objective and quantitative changes to include attitude, appreciations, and understanding as well as acquisition of knowledge and skills. B. TYPES OF EVALUATION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT 1. Diagnostic Evaluation 1.1 Two Main Purposes 1.1.1 to determine for each pupil the proper starting point for learning or placement which requires evaluation prior to instruction. 1.1.2 to discover the cause of learning deficiencies which require evaluation before or while instruction is going on. 2. Formative Evaluation - is designed to provide continuous feedback or information useful for directing both students and teacher activity as they go through the days lesson. 3. Summative Evaluation - is directed towards a much more general assessment of the degree to which the broad objectives or a hierarchy of objectives in one or several units in the MLC have been learned. 3.1 The main function is the certification or grading of students at the end of a broad unit of work, a grading period, semester, or course. 3.2 It is also used for the purpose of grading the learner at the end of learning unit, before proceeding to the other. 3.3 It requires the coverage of big chunks of content corresponding to broad objectives. 3.4 Summative Test 3.4.1 These are generally norm-referenced in the sense that they are developed along the traditional rules of construction. 3.4.2 They cover several objectives. The tests are composed of sample items from the universe of items on each of the objectives covered. 3.4.3 The items are of average difficulty, ranging from 35% to 70 % with some very easy and some very difficult items. 3.4.4 Types of Summative Tests 3.4.4.1 Bi-weekly Test 3.4.4.2 Monthly Test 3.4.4.3 Periodical Test 3.4.4.4 Annual Achievement Test ** Weekly tests based on short learning units of instruction or on several related lessons while

being summative tend to have the other characteristics of formative evaluation. If the total scores on weekly test are considered and converted into marks, then the evaluation is summative, but if these are used to determine mastery levels, then this is formative evaluation.
