A Brief Overview of Colloidal Silver and Its Many Benefits

What Is Silver Colloid?

Colloidal silver is a completely natural, liquid mineral supplement that is sold in virtually every
health food store in North America, or can be made quickly and easily with a small, countertop
mechanical device called a colloidal silver generator.

It is much like mineral water, except that in this case, the only mineral content in the water are
tiny, sub-microscopic particles of pure silver.

Known for Thousands of Years

Pure silver, by itself, has been known for thousands of years to have powerful, broad-spectrum
infection-fighting qualities – even against the most stubborn and deadly of pathogens. So when
the process for making colloidal silver was discovered in the late 1800s shortly after Edison
harnessed electricity, it immediately became the most popular natural infection-fighting agent
of them all among savvy doctors and clinical researchers.

It is completely safe to use internally, for serious deep-seated infections, or even for simple
infections like colds and flu. Or it can be used externally on cuts, burns, lacerations and
infections.

Simple Electrical Process

Colloidal silver is made through a simple electrical process that pulls very tiny sub-microscopic
particles of silver from a larger pure silver electrode immersed in water. These tiny invisible
silver particles are held in suspension in the resulting solution by the electrical charge left on
each atom after being sintered away from the silver electrode.

When ingested, these tiny particles of silver travel throughout your body just like any other
mineral supplement before being excreted through your body’s normal channels of elimination.

However, as the silver particles come into contact with pathogenic microorganisms that are
susceptible to silver, the silver rapidly inactivates and kills the microbes, thus preventing them
from colonizing, spreading and causing disease. Hence colloidal silver’s growing reputation as
the world’s most powerful natural infection-fighting agent.

According to science writer Jim Powell in the March 1978 issue of Science Digest:

“Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine.

An antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some
650. Resistant strains fail to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic.”

Dr. Robert O. Becker, MD, noted bio-medical researcher from Syracuse Medical University, and
author of the best-selling books The Body Electric and Cross Currents, recognized a distinct

correlation between low silver levels and sickness. He said silver deficiency is often responsible
for the improper functioning of the immune system. Regarding the innate ability of metallic
silver to control infection, Dr. Becker said:

“All of the organisms that we tested were sensitive to the electrically generated silver
ion, including some that were resistant to all known antibiotics.”

Regarding the safety of silver, he said:

“In no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent.”

What’s more, Alfred Searle, founder of the global Searle Pharmaceuticals conglomerate, wrote
in 1919 that:

“Applying colloidal silver to human subjects has been done in a large number of cases
with astonishingly successful results. For internal administration...it has the advantage
of being rapidly fatal to parasites without toxic action on its host. It is quite stable. It
protects rabbits from ten times the lethal dose of tetanus or diphtheria toxin.”

How Does It Work? – Scientists say colloidal silver works as a catalyst, disabling the enzyme
that one-celled bacteria, fungi and viruses use for their respiration and metabolism.

Unlike with antibiotics, resistant strains have never been known to develop. In fact, experts say
that very few known disease-causing organisms tested have been able to live in the presence of
even minute traces of the chemical element of metallic silver known as colloidal silver.

When Is It Used? – Here is a small sample of diseases against which colloidal silver has been
used successfully, according to medical texts:

acne, allergies, appendicitis, arthritis, blood parasites, bubonic plague, burns (topical
silver is one of the few treatments that can keep severe burn patients alive), cancer,
candida, cholera, chronic fatigue, colds and flu, conjunctivitis, diabetes, gonorrhea, hay
fever, herpes, leprosy, leukemia, lupus, lymphangitis, lyme disease, malaria, meningitis,
parasitic infections both viral and fungal, pneumonia, rheumatism, ringworm, scarlet
fever, septic conditions of the eyes, ears, mouth and throat, shingles, skin cancer, staph
infections, strep infections, syphilis, toxemia, trenchfoot, certain viruses, warts and
stomach ulcers.

What About Pets and the Garden? – Experienced users claim colloidal silver has many
veterinary uses, such as healing burns and infections, and is also an effective treatment against
the dreaded canine parvo virus. Just add it to your pet’s water or food on occasion as a
nutritional supplement to help keep your pet healthy and infection-free.

You’ll also find colloidal silver very handy in the garden since it can be used against bacterial,
fungal and viral attacks on plants. Simply spray 10 ppm colloidal silver on the leaves, and add
some to the soil at the plant’s base.

On Vacation? – According to the experts, colloidal silver can be used to purify drinking water.
Adding 1 oz. of colloidal silver per gallon to purify drinking water of microorganisms is the
general recommendation in most publications we’ve seen.

Experts also say colloidal silver used internally is one of the best nutritional antidotes for food
poisoning. Some researchers suggest taking four ounces every half hour for several hours, until
symptoms subside. Don’t go on vacation without it! (Always consult with a licensed health care
practitioner for serious health conditions.)

What Doesn’t Colloidal Silver Do? – It is not known to interact with any other medications. It
doesn’t upset the stomach, and is, in fact, considered by many experienced users to be a
digestive aid.

The Bottom Line – Colloidal silver has been used with excellent results under the most
demanding health care circumstances for nearly a century. It is clearly making a dramatic
comeback as one of the stars of modern medicine, and it may well turn out to be the answer to
today’s horrifying infectious disease crisis in which pharmaceutical antibiotics are no longer
able to fight against pathogenic microorganisms as well as they could in the past, due to the
development of resistant strains.

Nevertheless, it is vital that simple common-sense be used when taking any nutrient or mineral
for any purpose, including for general health and well-being purposes. Although properly
prepared colloidal silver has generally been regarded as safe and side-effect free throughout its
many decades of usage, it is essential to understand that over-use or abuse of any substance —
even a “natural” substance like colloidal silver — can under certain circumstances result in
serious harm. Therefore, you are strongly urged to use common sense and normal caution
when taking colloidal silver, or any health supplement.

Colloidal Silver and Its Many Documented Uses

One of my favorite health books is the best-selling Prescription for Nutritional Healing by
certified nutrition counselor Phyllis A. Balch and her husband Dr. James F. Balch, M.D.

In it, the Balch’s document 25 different health conditions for which colloidal silver has been
found to be astonishingly effective. And for each listed condition, they briefly explain how
colloidal silver has been demonstrated to help.

Beginning on page 66, the authors state:

“Colloidal Silver can be applied topically, taken by mouth or administered intravenously.

Topically, it can be used to fight fungal infections of the skin or nails and to promote the
healing of burns, wounds, cuts, rashes, and sunburn. It can be used on toothaches and
mouth sores, as eye drops, and as a gargle to fight tooth decay and bad breath. It can be
used as sterilizer and can even be sprayed on air conditioning filters and air ducts and
vents to prevent germs from growing. Taken internally, colloidal silver can be used to
fight infection. It has been shown to be effective against more than 650 disease-causing
organisms, including Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria and the fungus Candida albicans.”

Other uses of colloidal silver documented throughout the book are:

Bedsores – “A natural antibiotic and disinfectant. Destroys bacteria, viruses, fungi, and
parasites. Protects against infection and promotes healing.” (p. 212)

Bladder Infection – “A natural antibiotic. Destroys bacteria, viruses, fungi. Promotes healing.”
(p. 217, 219, 220)

Bronchitis – “A natural antibiotic that destroys bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Promotes healing.”
(p. 232)
