Warren Phone: 924-6719, 882-2180, 974-6086 e-mail: hwarren@virginia.edu Office hours: TBA Gibson Hall, South Lawn - #223 (look for Appalachian Trail marker) Lectures: MW 10:00-10:50 McLeod 2014 Course Description: This course is an introductory historical survey of the major religious traditions of the western world: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Subjects include the origins of monotheism, the rise of Israel as a nation, early Christianity, the rise of Islam, all three faiths in the Middle Ages, the Protestant Reformation, Christianity and Judaism in the Enlightenment, the influence of modern science, industrialism, and politics on religious life in all three faiths from the 19th century to the present, and the emergence of resurgent Islam. Course Requirements and Policies: - TESTS will be given in class, WED., OCT. 9 and WED., NOV. 13. Review sheets will be provided. - A FINAL EXAM will be given SAT., DEC. 14, 9-12 in our lecture room. - ATTENDANCE at LECTURES and DISCUSSION SECTIONS is MANDATORY. You are expected to clear absences with the instructor ahead of time. Otherwise in the event of illness, emergency, or similar crisis a written statement accompanied by the Honor Pledge attesting to its veracity is required before the possibility of make-up work will be considered. Absence for a religious holiday is acceptable. - All work MUST BE PLEDGED. -COURSE BREAKDOWN: Test #1 -10%; Test #2-25%; Final Exam 40%; Participation -25%. -No extra credit will be available. -COMPUTER USE: You may NOT use a COMPUTER during lecture unless you have a learning disability accommodation certified through LNEC. You may NOT record lectures unless you have a learning disability accommodation certified through the LNEC. All note taking during lectures is to be done with pen or pencil and paper. Outlines for the lectures are on Collab. -Books are available at the UVA Bookstore, in the libraries, and through on-line sellers. Other required reading is on Collab. Bring printed copies to class.
