Turn on the cold water in a power shower and stay there for 10 tortuous minutes to get some idea of how numbingly nippy it is abseiling down a waterfall in the Lakeland fells. Then slip on a wet suit and try it for real because aquaseiling, as this invigorating pursuit is known, is worth adding to the list of action sports you really ought to try.

But aquaseiling is not to be confused with its close cousin, canyoning, which is 20 years old.(1) _________________ Aquaseiling is about negotiating waterfalls with ropes. While fixing an abseil directly over a scudding cascade is something most experienced climbers religiously avoid, others with a thirst for adventure have been doing it for fun for about a decade. (2)______________________ Cold-water therapy improves your circulation and boosts your immune system, but the idea of being immersed in an icy torrent for several minutes at a time sounds like masochism. Yet, strangely, once cocooned in wet suit, helmet, neoprene gloves, boots and a buoyancy aid, I feel supremely prepared. Thus harnessed and roped up, I edged backwards towards the lip of my first nursery waterfall in Church Beck in the Coppermines Valley, near Coniston in Cumbria. My guide is Steve Gray, who is methodical and thorough. (3)_______________________ More accidents occur when abseiling than when climbing. But most are due to human error and are avoidable. Gray is shaven-headed beneath his helmet, but doesnt feel the cold. Im used to it, he yells above the thunder of the water. Now, just step to your right and enjoy yourself.(4)_________________ He takes groups of up to eight people (aged at least 18) on day-long, miniexpeditions whenever weather conditions allow.

A. Even in winter B. Gray is always looking for new aquaseiling descents in the Lakes or in the Yorkshire Dales. C.
