About SEL
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories has delivered solutions for over 25 years that make electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical. SEL invented the worlds first digital distance relay in 1984, revolutionizing fault location, event analysis, and protection. In 1999, south of Orlando, Florida, SEL implemented smart grid projects in the International Drive power grid to automatically sectionalize a faulted line and reconfigure the grid to restore service to unfaulted sectionsall within six cycles. Leading in wide-area monitoring, protection, control, and analysis, SEL has installed over 31,000 SEL synchrophasor phasor-measurement-ready relays around the world. We offer engineering services, providing professional consulting and turnkey solutions for utility, industrial, and commercial markets worldwide. We also offer specialized training through SEL University courses. Visit www.selinc.com/selu for more information and to register for courses.
Reliability
SEL designs and manufactures products for the worlds most challenging production environments to exceed all industry standards for temperature, shock, and electric stress. SEL products operate in a temperature range of 40 to +85C (40 to +185F). They withstand electrostatic shock up to 15 kV and are vibration/shock resistant up to 15 g. We rigorously test our equipment in real-world conditions, producing products that lead the industry in their ability to withstand harsh substation environments. Manufactured in Pullman, Washington, USA, SEL products exceed industry standards and come with a ten-year, no-questions-asked, worldwide warranty. Through a relentless focus on continual improvement, SEL achieves ever-increasing levels of quality, delivery, and service performance. Since 2004, in independent studies conducted by Newton-Evans Research Company, Inc., electric utilities have ranked SEL the North American leader in all categories surveyed, including technology, price, features, service, and security.

SEL M i r r o r e d B i t s Communications
Mirrored Bits communications is an innovative, low-cost, relay-torelay communications technology that exchanges the status of eight internal logic points called Mirrored Bits, encoded in a digital message, between two devices. This patented technology opens the door to numerous integration applications that would otherwise require more expensive external communications equipment wired through contacts and control inputs. Integration applications for Mirrored Bits communications include line protection pilot schemes, remote device control and monitoring, relay cross-tripping, and more. Apply Mirrored Bits communications over radio channels for directional comparison protection schemes. This provides fast fault clearing and preserves transient and voltage stability at very low cost. For additional information on integrating your applications using Mirrored Bits, visit www.selinc.com/mirroredbits.

In 1984, SEL invented the worlds first digital distance relay with a built-in fault locator, revolutionizing fault finding. Current SEL event reporting technology and software, such as the ACSELerAtor Analytic Assistant SEL-5601 Software, makes wide-area monitoring, collection, analysis, and control of power system data possible. Integrated systems with SEL synchrophasors take event analysis one step further by providing the ability to monitor power system disturbances in real time through angle 1750 measurements, modal analysis, and out-of-step detection. You can view time-synchronized events together using the SEL-5601 Software. SEL 1550 Line Trip uses the SEL-3378 Synchrophasor Vector Processor (SVP) to create real-time, wide-area monitoring, protection, automation, and control solutions. 1350

Another outage in Florida on February 26, 2008, was quickly analyzed by engineers using an SEL integrated and synchronized solution. The engineers then used their synchronized solution to improve their models and prevent similar situations in the future. A NERC press release on the Florida outage stated that synchrophasors are like the MRI of the bulk power system.

Implement cybersecurity with substation-hardened products from SEL. SEL relays and information processors contain strong electronic access-control technologies to effectively secure your cyberassets. The SEL-3620 Ethernet Security Gateway secures all Ethernet communications between your private networks and interoperates with existing business IT and control systems over an Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) virtual private network (VPN). The SEL-3620 protects your private network from malicious traffic with an integrated firewall and strong authentication access control. The SEL-3025 Serial Shield, an EIA-232, bump-inthe-wire serial cryptographic transceiver, protects meters, protective relays, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), and computers. The SEL-3025 prevents unauthorized access, control, monitoring, and malicious attacks by authenticating and optionally encrypting all data along the communications path. Our tough computers are also used in security solutions for their inherent authentication, security management, IPsec IP filtering, encryption, logging, password protection, and authentication features. Combine SEL technology with your policies, procedures, and training for a complete solution. For more information, visit www.selinc.com/cybersecurity.
SEL employs a number of individuals with professional security certifications in different levels and roles, and works closely with universities to implement the most current security technologies.

SEL remedial action schemes (RAS) protect against blackouts and system instability, increase corridor capacity limits, increase reliability, respond automatically to system contingencies, and bring your system operation closer to its stability limits. With remedial action schemes from SEL, you can detect and automatically respond to multiple, consecutive system contingencies. Control thousands of contingencies and loads with high-speed Mirrored Bits communications or IEC 61850 GOOSE messages. Preserve system stability using intelligent, contingency-based actions, such as exible load and generation shedding. All loads and generation can be prioritized and shed only when necessary to satisfy the contingency. Remedial action schemes detect unstable power conditions and automatically take corrective action, such as system islanding, to avoid blackouts. Let SEL Engineering Services design a remedial action scheme for your system.
