4 General Section Introduction

Introduction
General Section
This display is intended to allow the vehicle operator to monitor vital truck and engine information while the vehicle is in use. It also has the capability to display stored trip information. Whenever possible, the desired display selection should be made prior to operating the vehicle.

About This Manual

The Cat ID has been designed for use on 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines and 3100 HEUI (3116 and 3126) Engines. Even though there are two different types of engines, Cat ID supports them similarly with this one manual describing all of the features of the Cat ID. When this manual describes a feature, you should assume that the feature applies to both types of engines. If a feature only applies to one type, the manual will state 3100 HEUI Engines Only or 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only. NOTE: The Cat ID will only support 3100 HEUI Engines (3116 and 3126) that are September 1996 model year or newer.

Select the desired display prior to moving the vehicle. Do not manipulate the display while the vehicle is moving. This could divert attention from driving efforts and result in personal injury or equipment damage.

Caterpillar Driver Information Display (Cat ID)

Features of Cat ID
The Cat ID can display a variety of engine and vehicle information, as described in this section. For detailed operating information see the Operation Section of this manual. It is recommended the driver review the available information as listed in this manual or the Cat ID Screen Map and select, before driving, the most important information for the trip. This will avoid unnecessary distractions while driving in traffic.

Engine Operating Information

The Cat ID provides information on cruise control set speed, PTO engine rpm set speed, fuel temperature to the engine, boost and oil pressure, coolant temperature, and intake manifold temperature.

Vehicle Trip Information

The Cat ID provides information on fuel economy, fuel used, average vehicle speed, idle and PTO time, percent idle time, idle fuel, and PTO fuel. All of the these parameters can be tied to trip segments or the engine history. A Driver Trip Segment is available for 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines only. A Fleet Trip Segment is available for 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines and 3100 HEUI (3116 and 3126) Engines. For the Driver Trip Segment, the driver determines the start and stop points, and for the Fleet Trip Segment the vehicle owner determines the start and stop points. The Fleet Trip Segment can be tied to each state the vehicle operates in, as well as split between two Driver IDs.

6 General Section Features of Cat ID

Maintenance Information
The last oil and filter change can be entered, allowing the display to indicate when the next oil and filter change is due.

Diagnostic Data
The Cat ID provides diagnostic codes, with both a number, and a brief text explanation. Those codes, indicating a potentially serious engine problem, are displayed automatically by Cat ID. When one of these codes appears, the driver should bring the vehicle to a stop (off the road and out of traffic), because the engine may shutdown within 20 seconds. Refer to Automatically Displayed Diagnostic Codes in the Operation Section, Display Screen Diagnostic Data for a list of these codes.

Theft Deterrent
The Cat ID provides the capability to allow or prevent engine starting, or shut the engine down by entering a four character password into the display when the engine is at idle.

Fuel Correction Adjustment

The Cat ID provides the capability to adjust the Fuel Correction Factor of the ECM.

Display Configuration
The display can provide information in either English/Spanish or English/French. Units of measure can be displayed in English (mph, U.S. gallons, psi,F), English-Imperial Gallons (mph, Imperial gallons, psi, F), or Metric (kph, liters, kPa, C). The English/French EEPROM as well as the French or Spanish manuals can be ordered by contacting your local Caterpillar Dealer.

Driver Entry
The Cat ID provides the capability to enter Driver IDs. This allows the ECM to log information for multiple drivers. This is useful in a slip-seat driving application.

State Crossing
The Cat ID allows the user to enter what state they are currently driving in. This allows the ECM to log separate driving records for each state.

Access to Parameters
Access to the available parameters requires an electronic engine to be connected to the SAE J1587 ATA Data Link. The availability of parameters depends upon the engine manufacturer, model year of engine, and ECM Customer Programmable Parameter settings.

Driver Information Display Screen Map

Operation Section
In order to view specific information, a Screen Map (SENR6503) and a Cat ID Screen Map (in this manual), is provided to aid in directly accessing a specific screen. Each block of the Screen Map has arrows attached, indicating the actual display arrow keys which are available with each information screen. Pressing a display arrow not shown as available is ignored, and the display will remain at the same information screen. Row 1 of the screen map indicates the title screen for each of the columns of information screens. The rightmost title screen and INSTANTANEOUS DATA title screen in column 1 are adjacent, meaning pressing the right arrow key from the rightmost title screen moves to the INSTANTANEOUS DATA title screen in column 1. In general, movement between the columns of information is permitted only when the column title screen is in view. The exception to this is movement between the Fleet Trip, Driver Trip, and Lifetime Total columns (only available with 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines). The Up and Down arrow keys allow movement up and down through the information columns. When viewing the bottom information screen for a column, you can press the Down arrow key to select the column title screen. You cannot however, press the Up arrow key from the column title screen to get to the bottom information screen.

16 Operation Section Display Screens (After Power-up)

Display Screens (After Power-up)

The Cat ID will go through a sequence of screens when first powered up. Each of these screens is intended to provide set-up information to the driver before driving the vehicle. Cat ID will proceed through each screen, after displaying the screen for 3 seconds. It is recommended the power-up sequence be completed with all desired set-up information entered, and a desired information screen selected before driving the vehicle. An Active Diagnostic Code indicating a potentially serious engine problem will be automatically displayed by Cat ID and override the normal power-up sequence.

NOTICE Depending on truck configuration, the engine may shut down when a potentially serious engine problem diagnostic code becomes active. The operator will be provided a warning indication 20 seconds before engine shutdown.

To avoid a hazardous condition that may cause injury or death, steer the vehicle to a suitable location to stop immediately when the warning code appears.

A complete map of the screens follows in the Cat ID Screen Map section.

Display Screen Sequence

Theft Deterrent
The second screen shown, following power-up, is the THEFT DETERRENT title screen. The Cat ID will indicate the current status of the THEFT DETERRENT System, enabled, auto-enabled, or disabled. If the system is enabled, a password must be entered to start the engine. Press any key to continue.

17 Operation Section Display Screens (After Power-up)

Driver Entry (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only)
If programmed, the Cat ID will indicate the last driver stored as the active driver in the system. If the Fleet Trip Segment has been reset, the display will indicate NO ACTIVE DRIVER. Press any key to continue.

State Crossing (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only)
If programmed, this screen is the STATE CROSSING title screen. This indicates the last state stored as the current state in the system. If the Fleet Trip Segment has been reset, the display will indicate NO ACTIVE STATE. Press any key to continue.

PM1 Maintenance
The final screen is a PM1 MAINTENANCE screen. This indicates when PM1 (oil and filter change) maintenance is due within 3000 miles/60 hours, or past due. Following the power-up sequence, the Cat ID will display the Miles Per Gallon screen under the INSTANTANEOUS DATA title screen. The driver can then go to the appropriate screen to enter the theft deterrent password, driver identification, and or state as necessary. The driver should then select the desired screen for viewing while driving, before starting the trip.

Whenever possible, the desired display selection should be made prior to operating the vehicle. Do not manipulate the display while the vehicle is moving. This could divert attention from driving efforts and result in personal injury or equipment damage.

18 Operation Section Screens (Instantaneous Data)

Screens (Instantaneous Data)

The display can indicate the status of up to 16 different engine and vehicle operating conditions (or parameters) as determined by the Engine Electronic Control System. The INSTANTANEOUS DATA can include: Current Fuel Economy, Fleet Trip Segment Fuel Economy, Vehicle Speed, Cruise Set Speed, Fuel Rate, Engine Load, Engine Speed, PTO Set Engine Speed, Fuel Temperature, Boost Pressure, Coolant Temperature, Oil Pressure, Intake Manifold Temperature, Ambient Air Temperature, Cold Mode Status, and Multi-Torque Status. Remember that not all engines support all of the INSTANTANEOUS DATA parameters. The parameters supported depend on the type of engine. For example, 3100 HEUI Engines only support 11 of the 16 possible INSTANTANEOUS DATA parameters. View the appropriate screen map for the particular engine for a complete listing of INSTANTANEOUS DATA parameters. NOTE: These parameters use the Engine Electronic Control System (ECM, Sensors, and Switches) as their source of information. This information may deviate from other vehicle gauges because they use different sensors for their source. It is likely the Cat ID and the vehicle cab gauges will indicate different values, and respond slower/faster to changing conditions as the vehicle operates. Because the readings are different, it does not indicate the display gauges or the engines electronic components are defective.

Fleet Trip Segment

This information is intended for the fleet owner, or owner-operator. The ability to reset the information from the Cat ID depends on how the engine is programmed. Additionally, the Fleet Trip Segment can be reset using electronic service tools and the appropriate passwords. Resetting the Fleet Trip Segment does not affect the Driver Trip Segment (if supported) or the Lifetime Totals. The Fleet Trip Segment is shown on the Cat ID screen map.

(3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only)

The Cat ID provides the driver with the capability to enter the state in which the vehicle is driving. The state information is then part of the Fleet Trip Segment. The Cat ID also provides the capability to enter two Driver IDs for the Fleet Trip Segment. The Fleet Trip Segment can then be sorted for the two Driver IDs by the Caterpillar Fleet Information Software. The state information is shown on the Cat ID screen map. Entering the State Crossings and Driver ID is explained further in this manual. When the Fleet Trip Segment is reset, the Fleet Trip Driver IDs, and Fleet Trip State Totals are cleared.

Driver Trip Segment (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only)
The Driver Trip Segment is intended for, and controlled by the driver. The Driver Trip Totals are shown on the Cat ID screen map in column 2. Resetting the Driver Trip Segment does not affect the Fleet Trip Segment (and therefore State Totals or Driver IDs) or Lifetime Totals.

Screens (Diagnostic Data)

The display will automatically indicate certain diagnostic codes as they occur. The DIAGNOSTIC DATA screens provide the advantage of indicating why the vehicle Check Engine lamp has come on. The codes will be displayed with their SAE J1587 defined PID - FMI (Parameter Identifier - Failure Mode Identifier) and a brief text description. If more than one code is active, pressing the Down arrow key will scroll through the remaining codes. If only one code is active, pressing the Down arrow key will return the display to the DIAGNOSTIC DATA title screen. If a code becomes inactive while it is being viewed, it will disappear from the screen and the display will indicate other codes or No Active Codes as appropriate.
AUTOMATICALLY DISPLAYED DIAGNOSTIC CODES PID - FMI 100 - 11 110 - 11 111 - 11 100 - 01 100 - 00 111 - 01 105 - 00 105 - 11 Very Low Oil Pressure Very High Coolant Temperature Very Low Coolant Level Low Oil Pressure Warning High Coolant Temperature Warning Low Coolant Level Warning High Intake Air Temperature Very High Intake Air Temperature Code Description

The codes listed in the Automatically Displayed Diagnostic Codes chart are automatically displayed any time they are active. The display will continue to show these codes until any key is pressed, or the diagnostic goes from a bad state, to a good state. At this time, the Cat ID will return to the screen that was displayed before the diagnostic event (unless another code is active). The codes are displayed to alert a driver to a potential engine damaging condition. Codes 100 - 11 Very Low Oil Pressure, 111 - 11 Very Low Coolant Level, and 110 - 11 Very High Coolant Temperature indicate the engine is experiencing a serious problem.

NOTICE Depending on truck configuration, the engine may shut down when a potentially serious engine problem diagnostic code becomes active. The operator will be provided a warning indication 20 seconds before engine shutdown.

40 Operation Section Screens (Diagnostic Data)

To avoid a hazardous condition that may cause injury or death, steer the vehicle to a suitable location to stop immediately when the warning code appears.

What to Do When a Code Occurs

Whenever a diagnostic code occurs, try to note all operating conditions of the vehicle. It is especially critical to take note of the operating conditions for intermittent codes. This provides the technicians with the operating conditions at the time the code occurred. This will enhance the technicians ability to recreate or properly diagnose and repair the problem. These codes are also recorded in the ECM for recovery by a technician using the proper electronic service tool.

Diagnostic Code Chart

The following Suggested Driver Action for Diagnostic Codes chart is provided to help determine what action should be taken if a particular diagnostic code is active. It is intended as a general guideline, however current operating conditions should determine the drivers reaction to the codes. For example, a brief intermittent code should only be serviced if it is persistent or repeatable.

47 Operation Section Screens (Theft Deterrent)

Screens (Theft Deterrent)

Theft Deterrent
The Cat ID provides the capability to allow or prevent engine starting, or shut the engine down by entering a four character password into the display when the engine is at idle. In the power-up sequence, the display will indicate if the Theft Deterrent System is enabled, auto-enabled, or disabled. With the system enabled or auto-enabled, the engine will not start until the four character customer password is successfully entered into the display. If the system is disabled, the engine will start without the password. To enable the system, the customer password must be successfully entered. Entered passwords will not be accepted if the engine is not at idle condition or an incorrect password is entered. To auto-enable the system, the truck needs to be shut off in a normal manner. The Theft Deterrent parameter needs to be programmed to be in the Auto-Enable mode.

Accessing Theft Deterrent

ECM Customer Programmable parameters determine the access to this function of the dash display. If the ECM is not programmed to allow access to this screen, the entire Customer Parameter column of the screen map will not be shown. Therefore, pressing the Right arrow key from the DIAGNOSTIC DATA (if Theft Deterrent is not programmed) title screen will skip over the CUSTOMER PARAMETER title screen. After programming the parameters in the ECM, power to the display must be turned OFF and then back ON for the display to recognize the change.

If a password is forgotten, an electronic service tool must be used to read the programmed password.

Screens (Fuel Correction Adjustment)

(3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only)
The Fuel Correction Adjustment allows fine tuning of future fuel use data based on past differences between the ECM stored value and your recorded fuel usage.

Accessing Fuel Correction Adjustment

An ECM Customer Programmable Parameter determines access to this function of the dash display. If the ECM is not programmed to allow access to this screen, the entire Fuel Correction Adjustment column of the Screen Map will not be shown. Therefore, pressing the Right Arrow key from the THEFT DETERRENT title screen or pressing the Left Arrow key from the DISPLAY CONFIGURATION title screen will skip over the FUEL CORRECTION ADJUSTMENT title screen. After programming the parameter in the ECM, power to the display must be turned OFF and then back ON for the display to recognize the change. Fuel correction adjustments should only be made following an extended operating period with the vehicle driving on its usual routes. Adjusting the fuel correction effects all future Fuel Used data: Instantaneous, Driver Trip, Fleet Trip, and Lifetime Totals. It is recommended fuel correction adjustments be made when the vehicle is not moving.

Adjusting Fuel Correction

Determining Actual Fuel Economy
Before an accurate adjustment can be made, the actual fuel usage and distance traveled must be tracked. Because the display uses the Fleet Trip Segment as a basis for fuel correction adjustment it is easier to begin tracking actual fuel used and distance traveled immediately following a Fleet Trip Segment Reset. Following an extended period of time on typical driving routes, calculate the Actual Fuel Economy from the Fuel Used and Distance Traveled as follows:

The Caterpillar 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines ECM can maintain information for two Driver IDs at the same time. The ECM will separately store Fleet Trip Information for each of the two drivers. This function is ideally suited for slip seat or team driving. It could also be used by the same driver to track vehicle operation over two legs of a trip (a single driver would use two Driver IDs to identify the different legs of the trip). The Driver ID should be selected or entered before driving the vehicle. The Fleet Trip information, for each of the two drivers, is unavailable for display on the Cat ID. This information is only available by using the Caterpillar Fleet Information Software program.

Installation Procedure
1. Determine and mark the location for the display. The space requirements for the display are 113 mm (4.4 in) wide by 54 mm (2.1 in) high and 76 mm (3.0 in) deep. The dash must be 2.0 to 6.0 mm (.06 to .25 in) thick to allow the bracket to be secured to the back of the display. NOTE: If the dash is more than 6.0 mm (.25 in) thick, the in-dash mounting bracket can be carefully trimmed. 2. Disconnect vehicle batteries. 3. Locate all the wiring connections. The display requires the minimum of a fused key-switched (+)Battery, (-)Battery, ATA Data Link(+), and ATA Data Link(-) for proper operation. An optional fifth connection provides automatic dimming using the dash panel lights. The display requires less than 0.3 amps from the power lines. a. The key-switched (+)Battery and (-)Battery should be available in the cab fuse panel.

NOTICE The dash diagnostic data link has (+)Battery and (-)Battery connections available, but the (+)Battery may be unswitched. Connect the display to key switched battery.

72 Installation Section In-Dash Installation

b. The ATA Data Link(+) and ATA Data Link(-) are located behind the dash diagnostic data link or, preferably a two-pin connector, is available (already supplied by the vehicle manufacturer). Do not confuse the ATA Data Link lines with the SAE J1922 Data Link lines. c. The dash dimmer light connection should be accessible from behind the dash. The vehicle dimmer circuit must be a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) type circuit. Contact the vehicle manufacturer to determine the type of dimmer circuit, and if any of the necessary connections have an easy access point. 4. Connect the key-switched (+)Battery and (-)Battery. Crimp a terminal or wire splice from the display (+)Battery (red wire) to the vehicle key-switched (+)Battery, and from the display (-)Battery (black wire) to the vehicle (-)Battery. 5. Reconnect vehicle batteries, check for proper voltage and display operation. a. After reconnecting the vehicle batteries use a voltmeter and measure the voltage between the key-switched (+)Battery (pin 3, red wire) and (-)Battery (pin 4, black wire) with the key switch ON. The voltage should be 11 to 13.5 volts DC, if properly connected. b. Turn the key OFF and measure the voltage again. It should be zero (0) volts with the key in the OFF position.

NOTICE Displays with part numbers 114-3475, 123-8981, and 128-0941 are 12 volt systems. Do not use 24 volts to power these units this will damage the display unit. All other part numbers are 12 and 24 volt compatible. The part number of the unit is attached on a label to each display.
6. Connect the data link lines. NOTE: The data link(+) line and data link(-) line must be connected to the correct lines or the display will not work. a. Temporarily connect the display to the wiring harness. b. Turn the key switch ON. The display should come on. c. If the display comes on, but indicates there is no communication, turn the key switch OFF, and switch the data link lines. d. If this does not solve the problem, either the connections are insufficient or the lines are connected to the wrong data link connector (possibly the SAE J1922 instead of ATA Data Link).

7. Remove the dash front panel and cut the desired opening for the display. Carefully cut a 112 mm (4.4 in) wide by 53 mm (2.1 in) hole in the dash display. Always measure the width and height of your display before cutting. NOTE: Do not make the hole in the dash too large. Use a file or other means to avoid an over-size hole. The display face (3) holds the display in place against the rear mounting bracket (1). The display face is less than 2.8 mm (.12 in) larger (4) than the display housing (2).

Top View of Display (1) In-dash mounting bracket. (2) Display housing. (3) Display face. (4) Shoulder of display face 2.8 mm (.12 in). 8. Insert the display into dash. a. Insert the display from the front of the dash through the cutout. b. Install the rear mounting bracket and loosely tighten the two thumb screws to hold the display in place. c. Check the display from the front of the dash and make sure it is straight before tightening the thumb screws. 9. Secure the displays wiring harness. Use tie-wraps and secure the wiring harness to avoid wiring abrasion and operator interference. Cut off excess wiring, do not leave a coiled bundle of wire in the vehicle.

NOTICE Do not locate the driver displays wiring harness near wiring harnesses leading to or from radio equipment.
