Back with a bang Brenda Blethyn heads the cast.

ts not every day an Oscarnominated actress agrees to appear in an ITV1 drama series; in fact, we imagine that those who managed to persuade Brenda Blethyn to star in the first series of cases adapted from Ann Cleeves novels are still pinching themselves, unable to believe they successfully pulled off the feat. But, even better, Blethyn is back for a new run as DCI Vera Stanhope, who continues to bring bad people to book on her patch in Northumberland. Whats more, making the drama in the area has boosted its economy no end. Im so proud of Vera, says Cleeves.Of course the drama is

very different from the books and series two only contains one of my stories. But its intelligent with clear, compelling story-telling and it reflects the reality of my community one friend said how good it was to have a TV programme showing the north east with posh people and big houses! Most of all Im proud that the Swan Hunter site is alive again, employing local people, giving young actors and technicians work. We might not make ships here any longer, but were making stories and as the films are sold throughout the world were showing off this stunning part of the country. Blethyn is also thrilled that following a successful first series,

she was invited back for more. I was in Sydney, Australia, playing the formidable Mrs. Berry in Edna OBriens Haunted when I heard wed been re-commissioned, she grins. It was wonderful to know that Id be returning to the UK to play Vera again. But what is it that Blethyn really enjoys about playing the character? The more interesting the crime the more I like Vera getting stuck into it. Im a naturally inquisitive person. I love solving problems. Im a member of the Times Crossword Club and enjoy

the challenge of their cryptic crosswords. The harder the better! The first story sees Vera reunited with her first ever sergeant, Stuart Macken. But this is no welcome reunion; instead, theyre thrown back together in tragic circumstances. Stuarts house is petrolbombed; hes left badly burned, but its the injuries to his daughter he cant deal with, culminating in him committing suicide. Vera is devastated, but that terrible event makes her all the more determined to find out who carried out the initial attack, and learn in the process why he (or she) would want Stuart and his family dead.

Family pays tribute to teenager after body found in woodland

The grandparents of a popular teenager whose body was found in woodland have paid tribute to their grandson. The body of 18-year-old Tyler Walker, of Angerstein Road, Scunthorpe, was found in woods off West Common Lane on Sunday, April 22. Police are investigating the death. Tyler, a former Melior College student who was due to join the Army in May, had been reported missing by his grandparents on Saturday. His grandmother, Stephanie Hewitt, said he went to the towns Blarney Stone pub on Thursday. She spoke to him before he left home on Friday morning on his beloved BMX, and said he would be back after dinner. But despite numerous phone calls and text messages to his phone, Tyler failed to reply and was not seen by them again. Humberside Police came on Sunday evening to break the news of the discovery. We cannot get over why, said Mrs Hewitt, 61. Everybody loved Tyler. He never answered you back. He was a popular guy, clever, happy and would help anybody. Tyler, who was born in Scunthorpe, moved with his mum Kumel Walker, step-dad Tim and younger step-sister Kasi to

live in Canada when he was 14. He returned two years later because he wanted to join the Army moving back to Scunthorpe to live with his grandmother and his grandfather Michael Hewitt. Mrs Hewitt said: I was devastated when we were told his body had been found because Ive looked after him for years. I was heartbroken when he moved to Canada, but I always said if you want to move back, you know where we are. Tyler was due to officially join the Royal Logistics in Surrey on May 21. He had already bought all his equipment. When he first came back to Scunthorpe, it was very hard for him, she said. He was a third year senior at Melior, so all the friends he had made before he moved had grown up and gone their different ways. But in just two years, almost everybody in Scunthorpe knew him. His family said they were finding it difficult to come to terms with what happened. TURN TO PAGE 4
