II. WORD BREAK UP Wa Min And from An Naas The People or the Mankind Man Who (do not confuse with Min, here there is a Fatha over the Meem) Yaqulu Root Letters: Qaaf/Waw/Laam The word Qawl means to speak, speech, word, statement Ya in the beginning indicates its a Verb, some action is going on. And the action is the meaning that the root letters convey. Yaqulu He says If it was Yaquluna They say Aamanna Its from the word Imaan. Aamana to believe Amanna We believed. Na indicates We. Billaahi Bi (In) + Allah (Allah Swt) Wa Bilyaumil Aakhir Wa And Bi with Al Yaum The Day Al Aakhir The Last (The word Aakhira means Hereafter, Aakhir means the Last) So, Wa Bilyaumil Aakhir And in the Last Day

So, they say We have believed in Allah and they also say We have also believed in the Day that is Last, The Last Day, which is the Day of Judgment or the Day of Ressurection. Allah Swt says, Wa Ma Hum And not they The word Ma has multiple meanings, it means That which or What and also Not. Remember, whenever the word Ma is followed by the word Bi it gives the meaning of NOT BiMumineen Bi At all Mumi Believer Waw/Noon at the end indicates Plural. So, Mumineen means Believers, ones who believes. So, there are some from the Mankind, who says, We believe in Allah and the Last Day. But Allah Swt says They are not at all Believers. Why? Yukhaadiuna Yaa in the beginning Verb, some action is going on. Waw/Noon at the end Plural is doing the action What is the action here? The action is of Khidaa of Deceiving/of Deception Who do they deceive? Allaha Allah (They try to deceive Allah) And who else do they try to deceive? Wal Ladheena Aamanu Wa And Al Ladhina Those people who Aamanu have believed Aamanu is also from Imaan. Waw at the end indicates Plural. Just like Kafaru They disbelieved Similarly Aamanu They believed. Wa Ma And Not Ma is understood to give the meaning of NOT when it is also followed by the word Illa Yakhdauna Again, Yaa indicates Verb Waw/Noon indicates Plural Action is of the meaning that the root letters convey, Khadaa means to deceive So, Yakhdauna They deceive Illa Except Anfusahum - Themselves Anfus Selves derived from the word Nafas, which means Soul Hum Them/their So they only deceive themselves Wa Ma And Not Yashurun Yaa in the beginning Verb, some action is going on. Waw/Noon at the end Plural is doing the action What is the action here? The action is of Shiur of realizing, of perceiving. Yashurun They perceive, they realize Ma Yashurun They do not perceive, they do not realize. This second Ma is connected to the previous Ma and so it will carry the same meaning of NOT. Whats their problem? Allah Swt says,

Fi In Qulubihim Qulub Hearts Him Their. Whats in their hearts? Allah Swt says, Maradun Marad is a disease, an illness. Mareed is a person who is sick, ill, who is suffering from Marad. So, in their hearts is a Marad. What happens? Fazadahumullahu Fa So Zada He increased. The word Zada is from zyada which means increase, to augment, to make more Hum for them So He increased for them Fazadahum. Who increased for them? Allahu Allah So, Allah increased for these people in what? Marada In disease So He increased in disease for them, He made their disease grow. Wa lahum adhaabun aleemun Wa And La hum for them Adhaabun a punishment Aleemun painful Bima Because of what Bi over here, does not mean with. Here it means, Because of. Kanoo They were, they used to Yakhdhibun Yaa in the beginning Verb, some action is going on. Waw/Noon at the end Plural is doing the action What is the action here? The action is of lying. Root Letters Kaaf/Dhaal/Baa Qidhb/Kadhib to lie Yakhdhibun They lie Wa Iza And when Qila Same root as the word Qaalu Qaaf/Waw/Laam Qaalu They said Active voice Qila It was said Passive voice La Hum To them And when it is said to them. What is aid to them? La Tufsidu Do not make mischief. Do not corrupt. La Not, Over here, Do not Tufsidu is from the word Fasaad; root letters Faa/Seen/Daal mischief, corruption

Tufsidu Tu (You) and ends with Waw (Plural), so You all make mischief All of you, do not make mischief Fi In Al Ardi The Earth, Fil Ardi - in the Earth When they are told do not make mischief in the earth, do not create corruption in the earth; What did they do? Qaalu They said ; Waw at the end indicates Plural Innama Indeed not But Nahnu We; just like the words Nabudu We worship Nastaeen We ask for help Ihdina Guide Us Muslihun We are reformers, we make reforms The word Muslihun is Plural of Muslih just remove Waw/Noon Meem in the beginning indicates Noun E.g. Muttaqeen ones who have Taqwa Muslim ones who accept Islam Mumin one who have Imaan Muflihun ones who attain success Muslihun one who does Islaah. The word Islaah is from Salaah. One who makes peace, one who reforms Then Allah Swt says, Alaa Unquestionably The word Alaa is a single word, its a word on its own. You do not break it down as Hamza whether and La Not. NO Innahum Indeed They Hum They Only Al Mufsiduna Mufsid One who makes mischief Meem in the beginning indicates Noun Waw/Noon at the end Plural Al Mufsiduna Ones or Those who make mischief Wa Lakin But La Not Yashurun Yaa in the beginning Verb, some action is going on.

Waw/Noon at the end Plural is doing the action The word Shiur is to perceive Wa Iza Qila Lahum Wa And Iza when Qila it was said La hum to them Aaminu Aaminu with Kasra under the Meem You all believe Aamanu with Fatha over the Meem They believed Past tense Aaminu is a command, an instruction You all believe When it is said to them All of you believe Kama Just as Remember, when Ma comes with Kaaf; its not translated as What or Not. The meaning changes. Aamanannaasu Aamana He Believed And not Aamanu They believed Just as People have believed. Qaalu They said A Should. Its called Hamza Istehfahm, Interrogation, a question Numinu We Believe Kama Just as Aamanassufahaa The foolish ones believe. Assufahaa Al + Sufahaa Alaa Unquestionably Innahum Indeed they Humusufahaau Hum They Assufahaa The foolish ones Wa lakin But La Yaalamun They do not know Yaa in the beginning Verb, some action is going on. Waw/Noon at the end Plural is doing the action What is the action here? The action is of Ilm, of knowledge So, Yaalamun They know, They have knowledge La Yaalamun They do not know Wa Iza And when Laqoo

They met Waw at the end Plural Laqiya/Luqa to meet The word Mulaaqaat means a meeting Al Ladhina Aamanu Those people who have believed Qaalu They said Inna Indeed we Maakum Maa With Kum Your So, Maakum with you Innama Indeed not but Nahnu We Mustahziun Meem in the beginning indicates Noun Waw/Noon at the end Plural Hazaa to mock Mustahziun ones who mocks Allahu Allah Yastahziu Yaa indicates Verb No Waw/Noon indicates Singular is doing the action He Hazaa to mock So, Yastahziu He mocks Bi Him At them Wa yamudduhum Yamuddu - Yaa indicates Verb No Waw/Noon indicates Singular is doing the action He What is the action here? The action is of Madda means to extend something For e.g. Madd in Tajweed, it extends the sound of the word. Fi In Tughyaanihim Tughyaan transgression Him their Fi Tughyaanihim in their transgression Yaamahun Yaa in the beginning Verb, some action is going on. Waw/Noon at the end Plural is doing the action The root letters means Aamaha to wander blindly Yaamahun They wander blindly Ulaika

Those Al Ladhina Those who Ishtarawoo They bartered. Waw at the end indicates Plural (They) The word Shira means to buy yourself Addalaalata The Misguidance Bil Huda With the Guidance Fa ma FA - So Ma not Rabihat Taa at the end indicates Pronoun (It/she) Like Hum They Ka You Ta You Na We Notice, it is Taa with a Sukoon. If Taa has some haraka Fatha or Damma; then it has some other meaning Tijaaratuhum Tijaarah Trade Hum Theirs Wa ma And Not Kanoo They were Muhtadin Meem in the beginning indicates Noun One who Yaa/Noon at the end Plural Ones who Root Letters Haa/Daal/Yaa; which means Guidance, Hidayah So, Muhtadin Ones who obtain Guidance Notice here, both the Ma in this Ayaat, means NOT and Not WHAT. Sometimes by just looking at the Ayaat, the meaning itself is very clear. The other translations do not fit over there.

III. WORD ANALYSIS Bismillah ArRahmaan ArRaheem In Surat ul Fatiha, we learnt about 3 categories/groups of people. First group is of Al Ladhina Anamta Alayhim and their detail we studies in Surat ul Baqarah; the Muttaqeen those who have the knowledge, those who act upon the Quran, those who are on t he Guidance. Ulaaika Hudam Mir Rabbihim wa Ulaaika Humul Muflihun. The second group we learnt in Surat ul Fatiha were Al Maghdubi Alayhim. Those people who earned Allah Swts anger and their detail we learnt in Surat ul Baqarah in Ayaats Innal Ladhina Kafaru Sawaaun alayhim a andhartahum amlam tundhirhum la yuminun. And who are these people? The Disbelievers. Those people who are offered knowledge but what do they do? They cover that truth, knowledge, reality with their disbelief. And the third group we learnt were AdDaulleen those who are misguided, astray. Now we will study about this group of people. Who are they? Those who do not have the knowledge, who lack knowledge. Those who are

unaware of the reality, Deen, themselves. And even if they are given knowledge, they do not understand, comprehend, benefit from the knowledge that they come across; and even if they do some Amal, even if they do act upon something; they do it with insincerity, which is why their actions are not accepted. Who are these people? The Hypocrites. So, we see that there are 3 groups of people. One group is of Believers, then the Disbelievers, the outright disbelievers and the third group is of the Munaafiqeen, the Hypocrites. Allah Swt has mentioned the purest group or that which is Tayyib first, then which is Khabees, impure, bad, of the Disbelievers and then He mentions the Akhbath, that which is the most impure. And who are they? The Hypocrites. The following verses discuss who the Hypocrites are. Allah Swt says: Wa Minan Naasi And from the people, from mankind Mai Yaqulu Aamanna Billah There are some who say we believe in Allah Wa bil Yaumil Aakhir And also we believe in the Last Day, but Allah Swt says: Wa Mahum Bimumineen And they are not believers, they are not actually believers Tafseer Wa Minan Naasi From the people. Over here Min gives the meaning of Some of/Part of. There are some people who do this. Just as we read earlier Wa mimma Razaqnahum yunfiqun and from what we have provided them, they spend. Meaning, some of what we have given them, they spend out of it. Notice, this 3rd category of people, Allah Swt doesnt describe them with a particular description. Believers, Allah Swt described them with the description of Taqwa. Disbelievers, what was their description given? Wal Ladhina Kafaru. But the 3rd category, Allah Swt describe them neither with Iman nor with Disbelief. Why? Because they are neither here nor are they there. They are not really Believers and they dont appear to be Disbelievers either. Allah has described them in Quran Surat un Nisaa Ayaat no. 143 The hypocrites, they are wavering between them, belonging neither to the believers nor to the disbelievers. So, Allah Swt doesnt call them they are believers or they are disbelievers; but rather Allah Swt says Wa minan Naasi and from the people, there are some who do this. Mai Yaqulu There are those who say , there are some who say Aamanna Billah - we have believed in Allah An naas The people. We can say that the word Naas has been understood in different ways. 1. It is said that the root letters are Noon/Waw/Seen Naws, which literally means to dangle, to swing back and forth. People are called An naas because we are always moving back and forth, be it physically, spiritually, emotionally or mentally. 2. It is also said that the root letters are Noon/Seen/Yaa Nisyaan, which means to forget, forgetfulness. So, who are an-naas then? Those who forget. Human beings tend to forget. This is one of the weaknesses that human beings have. 3. It is also said that the root letters are Hamza/Noon/Seen Uns, which means to love, to have friendship, to be familiar. And human beings they tend to become familiar with each other, they develop love and friendship with each other. Human beings are different from the other creation in this way that they tend to become familiar to each other, incline to each other. This is how Human beings are. The word Man means who it is used for both Singular and Plural, but here its for Plural, because it says We have believed. Notice, Allah says Yaqulu They say, they claim, meaning they only make this statement at their tongues, only on their mouths. This is not what their heart says. This is not what they show with their actions. They only verbally proclaim faith. They only claim to be Believers. Because Allah Swt say Wa Ma Hum BiMumineen and they are not at all Believers. They are not actually Believers. The

definition or meaning of Iman that we studied was to affirm something first of all at the tongue, to believe it to be true at heart as well, and to prove it through a persons actions as well. These people, they are only claiming to be Believers. When it comes to their hearts or actions, they do something completely different. Which is why Allah Swt says Wa ma hum BiMumineen They are not at all Believers. BiMumineen The letter/word Ba is Zaid or Extra. Remember, any word which is extra in the Quran, it doesnt mean that it is useless, purposeless. What it means by Zaid or extra is that it is not understood literally. Its not going to be translated as we translate it otherwise. Generally, the word Bi means with. But here, we dont translate the word Bi as with. Why? Coz its Extra. The reason/purpose for being there is Emphasis. By the statement Wa ma hum Bimumineen it shows, they are not at all Believers. They are liars, They only claim to be Believers. They are not really Believers. So, what is their problem? What do they do? Allah Swt says: Yakhdaunallaha They try to deceive Allah Swt Wal Ladhina Aamanu And also those people who have believed Tafseer They try to deceive Allah Swt and also the Believers. How? By claiming to be Believers, by claiming to have Iman. The word Yukhaadiuna has root letters Khaa/Daal/Ain, Khadaa means to deceive someone, Basically, Khadaa is to conceal or hide the reality and keep the other person in darkness about it, keep the other person unaware of the reality. How? For e.g. a person says something and does something different, means something different, he has something else in his heart. So, Khadaa is to reveal something other than what is in the persons heart, other than what is the reality. Yukhaadiuna they are deceiving, trying to deceive. Who are they trying to deceive? Allah Swt and the Believers. If you notice the word Yukhaadiuna, you will also read another word Yakhdauna later. The translation is Yukhaadiuna means they try to deceive, Yakhdauna means they deceive . Difference between Yukhaadiuna and Yakhdauna The former has a Alif sound after Khaa. This form of the word, basically, gives us 2 meanings 1. Of trying to do a particular action, to attempt to do an action, also includes an effort on the part of someone who is doing the action. Yukhaadiuna means they are trying to deceive, they are trying very hard to deceive, they put an effort to deceive. 2. This structure or form of the word also gives us the meaning of a group together doing an action. So Yukhaadiuna means all of them, collectively as a group, they try to deceive Allah Swt and the Believers. So what this mean? All of these people they co-operate with each other. Together as a group, they claim to be Believers and by this, they try to deceive Allah Swt and also the Believers. So, Yukhaadiuna conveys firstly they are trying and secondly, all of them, collectively. If you see the meaning of collectively that our friends influence us. If we belong to a particular group, we will do eexactly what they are doing. What is their deceit or deception? - That they reveal Islam, they pretend to be Believers, whereas actually they are not Believers. They show Islam on surface whereas, in reality, in heart, there is disbelief! But the reality is, Allah Swt tells us: Wa Ma Yakhdauna And not they deceive Illa Anfusahum Except themselves Wa ma Yashurun And they dont realize Tafseer

By the act of theirs, who are they deceiving? Only themselves. Do they realize that? No, they dont. The word Yakhdauna is again from the same root as Yukhaadiuna Khadaa. It conveys the meaning of doing an action, individually, one on one and also conveys the meaning of being successful in doing the action. Yukhaadiuna they try to deceive and Yakhdauna they actually deceive. Who are they deceiving? Anfusahum Plural of Nafs. Root Letters Noon/Faa/Seen; means Soul. So they only deceive themselves, means that the consequences of their trying to deceive Allah Swt and the Messenger are against who? Themselves. Who is going to suffer? They r going to suffer. Because they are not actually Believers and they are only claiming to be Believers. So they deceive only themselves as the evil consequences of their trickery will fall upon them. Allah Swt says Wa ma Yashurun and they dont even perceive, they dont even realize. Yashurun Root Letters Sheen/Ain/Raa. Derived from Shiur; which means to realize, to know the reality. The word Shaar is from the same root, which means Hair. The hair are very fine, very thin compared to string or rope. So, Shiur is to know, to be aware of the fine details of something, of the subtle issues, not to be aware of something just on the surface, not just have superficial or apparent knowledge; but to realize, to know the reality of something, to know the fine details of something. This is what Shiur is. And what do they not realize? That they are actually deceiving and harming only themselves! The background of these verses: When Prophet Sws was in Mecca. He was there for 13 years. And when he was delivering the message of Islam to the People, the disbelievers were the main opponent. There were 2 groups in Mecca Believers and Disbelievers. In Mecca, becoming a Muslim meant you were in trouble, you are going to suffer, you were not going to be successful. So, the Believers were very sincere believers and anyone who was not sincere, would not become a Believer. Then the Prophet Sws migrated to Madinah, eventually Muslims became successful, in the Battle of Badr Muslims were victorious. So, in Madinah, there were 3 groups Believers, Disbelievers and Hypocrites. Who were the HYPOCRITES? Those people who accepted Islam only to gain worldly benefits because the Muslims were becoming successful. So they wanted to become a Muslim to enjoy the benefits of being a Muslim. So, their actual interest was not in Islam but in something else. They wanted the Duniya, they wanted the world. So, in trying to do that, they were only appearing to become Believers; and in that they were deceiving themselves and they didnt even realize the reality that they were actually harming themselves by this action. Whats their problem? Why do they do this? Allah Swt says: Fi Qulubihim Maradun In their hearts is a disease Fazadahumullahu Marada So, Allah increased them in their disease Tafseer Marad Root Letters Meem/Raa/Daad Meaning Disease, illness, sickness. Marad means any imbalance in the body. For e.g. If a persons blood sugar level is unbalanced, Blood Pressure is not normal or his body temperature is unbalanced He is going to be sick. But Marad is not just an imbalance in physical body, its not just about physical illness; but it also includes spiritual, psychological and mental illnesses. In their hearts is a disease, Disease of Hypocrisy; of Love of this Duniya, of this World. And also there is a disease of Doubt Doubt in the Messenger of Allah Swt Is He really a true Prophet, or Is He really a messenger of Allah? - Doubt in Quran Is this really the true Word of Allah? There is imbalance; there is no Faith, no

Yaqeen, no surety. The disease includes that of Shahwaat Desires and Shubuhaat Doubts. Remember, these two things, Desires and Doubts, if they enter a persons heart, th ey begin to extinguish his faith, his Iman. Desires are in actual, but if a person is always just pursuing his desires, every decision he makes is based on the fulfilment of his desires; obviously its going to affect his Iman. I dont want to pray because I dont feel like it. If we do everything because we feel like it or we dont feel like it; we wont have any principles. So, they have love for this life, for this world; and they also have doubts about their religion. What happens? Allah Swt says: Fazadahumullahu Marada - So, Allah increased them in their disease. The word Fa' Because of. It conveys the meaning of Cause. It is connected to the previous sentence. Because they didnt cure their marad, their sickness, as a result their disease increased. Zada Root Letters Zay/Yaa/Daal Derived from the word Zyada which means to increase, to multiply. Zadahum He increases for them in sickness, disease, Marad, illness. Meaning if there is an illness or if a person is sick and he doesnt cure the sickness, then its going to become worse, to the point that it will be incurable, it will be impossible to cure it. For e.g. if a person gets Cancer, and it is caught right at the beginning and is treated it is possible to cure it. But if he says Never mind, Its Cancer!, Im gonna die so it doesnt matter, I will suffer until I die, I have to die anyway, might as well Ill just suffer and then die Then the Cancer is gonna spread and eventually he is gonna die. Similarly, when there is a disease in the heart, like the disease of pursuing this Duniya, The Duniya is the Ultimate priority, the ultimate concern; similarly, Doubts about the Deen, about Allah Swt, about Quran; and if a person doesnt cure these diseases, Whats gonna happen? Its only going to increase to the point that it will become incurable. Its not going to be possible to cure it. Wa la hum And for them Adhaabun Alimun For them is a painful punishment Bima Kanoo Yakdhibun Because they used to lie Tafseer Yesterday, we did the word Adhaabun; Adhaabun Azeem - punishment that is great, now Adhaabun Alimun punishment that is painful Alim Root Letters Hamza/Laam/Meem Derived from the word Alamwhich means pain Sounds just like the word Raheem one who is especially merciful, one who shows mercy again and again. Similarly, Alim is that which will cause pain again and again. You see, one strike is painful; but multiple strikes are more painful. Repetition, it increases the pain and suffering. Also, if each blow is harder and severe, stronger than the previous, then also the pain increases. Alim gives a meaning of that which is extremely painful, that which will cause them a lot of pain. Also if you see, if you got some pain, you only suffer from physical pain. But if somebody hits you, you suffer the physical as well as the emotional pain. Its humiliating. So, for them is a painful punishment because its not just going to be physical but also mental, psychological. Allah Swt tells us in the Quran that the Hypocrites will have the worst punishment. In Surat un Nisaa, Ayaat no. 149, Allah Swt says that the Hypocrites will be in the lowest depth of Hellfire. Utter humiliation, bringing in disgrace as well as a lot of pain! Why? Allah Swt says Bima Kanoo Yakdhibun Because they used to lie. Yakdhibun Root Letters Kaaf/Dhaal/Baa The word Kadhib means a lie. Kadhaba/Yakdhibu means to lie. Yakdhibun They lie. Lie a statement that is against (contrary to) the reality, that is different from the concrete reality.

Notice here, Kanoo Yakdhibun is mentioned. When the word Kanoo comes before a verb, it gives the meaning of doing the action constantly, habitually, not just once or twice but doing the action continuously. So, Bima Kanoo Yakdhibun does not just mean They lie but it means They used to habitually lie, used to lie again and again. This was their habit. Lying was their habit. What did they lie about? What was their lie? Their claim that they believe in Allah Swt. In their hearts, they werent Believers, but they only claimed to be Believers. So, for them is a painful punishment. Why? Because they used to lie. Hadeeth - "The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks his promise and when he is entrusted he betrays the trust." (Bukhari and Muslim) So, from these verses, we learn that a Hypocrite, he lies; it is a sign of a Hypocrite that he lies. And we really have to check ourselves, because sometimes, we lie. May be in a joke, just to make someone laugh, to get away from something, when we dont wanna talk to somebody and when they call. Lie is anything which is not true, which is not the case. Just imagine, a little pain of this Duniya we cannot bear, then in Hereafter there is a very painful punishment for the ones who lie. So this ayaat is sufficient for us to stop lying with regards to little issues, small things. Hadeeth - Hazrat Safwaan bin Sulaim radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam was asked, "Can a believer be a coward? He said, "Yes, he can be coward. Then it was asked whether a believer could be a miser? He replied, "Yes, he can be a miser", it was then asked whether a believer could be a liar? He replied, "No, a believer cannot be a liar." (Imam Malik, Mishkaat) What are the different kinds of lies that surround us? When we say well do something but we actually dont do it. While telling a joke or a story, we add some extra details which are not true, just to exaggerate, just to impress, amuse, convince others, make them agree with us. Just to get out of trouble, a difficult situation To get work done from someone Deceiving or twisting the Truth Lie about the age Sometimes to show-off So, we should be careful about our speech, we should watch our tongue. If you dont want to tell the truth to someone, just tell them I dont feel comfortable sharing this information with you. Lying is a characteristic/quality of Hypocrites and it is very dangerous because this is from where, a lot of problems begin. We lie once and then we have to lie again and again, to cover that lie. We have to lie that lie. Revision From the Ayaat no. 8, we were studying about the 3rd group of mankind, that has been mentioned at the beginning of Quran. The Believers - those who are blessed with Guidance, who are on the right way, those who are successful. The Disbelievers - who are not on Guidance, those who are Maghdub, those who are offered Guidance but they reject it, they deny it, they dont believe, they dont accept and at the end they deserve the punishment of Allah Swt. The Hypocrites The Daulleen, those who are astray, who have no knowledge, no understanding, who lack comprehension and they are not on the right way. They are not on the path of Guidance. As Allah Swt concludes the discussion with Wa Ma Kanoo Muhtadin- they are not those who obtain Guidance, meaning they are Daulleen, they are astray. Arabic word for Hypocrites Munaafiqun. Munaafiq is someone who suffers from Nifaaq (Hypocrisy). Root Letters Noon/Faa/Qaaf Derived from Nafaqa, same as Yunfiqun. When you spend something, what does it mean? Literally, it means Kharaja to leave. So, a Munafiq he enters into Islam and as soon as he finds some difficulty, he leaves. He begins to do something for Allah Swt, when he finds it difficult; he leaves. He is not

committed to the Deen. If there is any challenge, any difficulty; he leaves. Because he never really entered in Islam with sincerity in the first place. Also, from the same root is the word Nafqa/Nafiqa, which means a mouse, a female mouse. It lives in the desert and its house is an underground tunnel which has multiple openings, so that it can leave from any opening in case of any danger. Hypocrites also, he enters in Islam, and when there is any difficulty, he has his exits, his ways out, he doesnt stay there. When things become difficult, he doesnt like to take challenge. Wa minan Naasi mai yaqulu aamanna billahi wa bilyaumil aakhir - And of the people there are some who say, we believe in Allah and the Last Day. But Allah Swt says Wa ma hum Bi'mumineen - They are not actually believers. Why does Allah Swt say that? Because Allah Swt knows what's in their hearts. They are only making the statement on their tongues, they don't actually mean it. They are only verbally proclaiming their faith. They dont actually mean that they have believed in Allah and the Last Day. Then Allah Swt says: Yukhaadi'unallaha wal ladhina aamanu - They try to deceive Allah and those who believe. How? By just appearing to be Believers, to be Muslims. Why this act of theirs is called Deceit? They are hiding the Truth, their Kufr, their Disbelief, and also they are trying to show themselves as Believers to gain some benefits, to get some advantages, which they wouldn't get if they were not Believers. But Allah says:Wa Ma Yakhdauna Illa Anfusahum Wa ma Yashurun - But they deceive not except themselves but they perceive it not. How are they deceiving themselves? The hypocrites think they can cheat without getting caught, but Allah Swt knows. They are only harming themselves by this deceit. Who is going to suffer the consequences of their deceit? Not Allah and his Messenger, but they, themselves. So, it shows that Allah Swt will punish them for this deceit. Where? When? How? In this Duniya and in the Aakhira as well. In this world by their hypocrisy being revealed to the people around them and in the Hereafter by the punishment. Then Allah says they dont even realize or perceive the fact that they would be the ones who will suffer. Remember, anybody who tries to harm others, he harms himself, both in this world and in the Hereafter. The one who digs the hole for another, falls in it himself first. Many times, people dont even realize that when they try to harm others, they are actually harming themselves. For e.g. When a person tries to degrade or ruin the reputation of another person, he goes about talking bad, talking negative things about him to others. Okay fine, that person is going to have a negative reputation. What else is going to happen? When people see him, they'll say, they'll think - Oh, He is the person who talks bad about others, talks negative about others. Surah Fatir Ayaat No. 43, The evil plot does not encompass except its own people. Meaning those people who have devised that evil plot, suffer first. They do this to get benefits from both the sides, from the sides of the Believers as well as from that of the Disbelievers. But do actually get any benefits? Maybe for some time; but soon people realize or discover their reality. Then Allah says Fi Qulubihim Maradun - In their hearts is a disease, disease, sickness, ailment of Hypocrisy, of Doubt, of Shaq about the Deen. Because if they had yaqeen about their religion, then they would enter it wholeheartedly, with confidence and they would be committed to the Deen. When a person is not committed to something, it shows that they are not sure or confident about it. And if a person is committed to something, it shows that they are 100% sure that that is what they must do, they should do. They are committed. Do they cure their disease? No, they dont. As a result Fazadahumullahu Marada - So, Allah increased their disease. Just as any disease, if it's not cured, it's going to increase; if a person has some doubt about the Deen, or Qur'an, about anything pertaining to religion, what's the cure for that? Knowledge, Ilm; the cure for Shaq, for doubt is gaining knowledge. So if a person has any doubt about the Deen, what shall he do? Should he go about questioning others and spreading the doubt, making other people doubtful as well? Or should he just stay in that doubt and increase in doubt until eventually he loses his faith completely? No. He should go and gain knowledge about the Deen; seek knowledge of the Deen in order to cure this ailment. Fazadahumullahu Marada - Allah Swt increases them in their doubt, disease; as a result what's going to happen? Wa lahum adhaabun alimun - and for them is apainful punishment. Why? Bima Kanoo Yakdhibun -

Because they used to lie. What is a painful punishment? That which causes a person more and more pain. How? By coming upon him repeatedly and with more severity with each blow, with each punishment and also it is painful, why? It is both, physical as well as mental, emotional. For e.g. as far as physical pain, punishment, Allah Swt tells us in Surat un Nisa'a - The Hypocrites they will be in the lowest depth/bottom of Hellfire, where the punishment is more severe. As per the mental or emotional punishment, we learn about that in Surat ul Sajdaa Ayaat no. 20, Allah Swt says about the people of Hellfire - Everytime the people of Hellfire will intend to come out of the Hellfire, they'll be returned back into the Hellfire. And it will be said to them, Taste! Taste the punishment of the Hellfire which you used to deny before! So Yes, there is physical punishment but along with that there is also emotional, mental punishment; because they'll want to come out but each time they'll be returned. There is no escape and also with the return, they'll be reproached, they'll be reprimanded, Taste! Experience this punishment because you used to deny, because of the denial that you did, because of the wrong that you did. Bima Kanoo Yakdhibun - Because they used to lie. We learn from this Ayaat that anyone who wishes to be guided, he has to stop lying. Because the Hypocrites, they lie; and the Hypocrites, they do not receive Guidance. Elsewhere in the Qur'an in Surah Ghafir Ayaat No. 28, it is mentioned that Indeed! Allah does not guide one who is transgressive and a liar! A person who lies, Allah Swt does not guide him. And for those who lie, there is a severe punishment. A believer is truthful and we learn in Qur'an that those people who are truthful, their truthfulness is going to help them on the Day of Judgment. Most of the times, we say that the lies which we tell are just small white lies, petty lies, what's the big deal! But if a person tells one lie, it becomes a habit. Kanoo means they habitually used to lie, they used to lie always, it was their habit. Allah Swt says - Qulu qawlan Sadeeda - Say the statement that which is straight, correct, and proper, according to reality. Because once a person starts to lie with regards to little issues, then it becomes a habit, it becomes a second nature. A person don't even realize that he is lying. All of us have to be very careful, to watch every word that we utter, to watch everything that we say. Next Ayaat, Allah Swt says: Wa Iza Qila Lahum And when it is said to them La Tufsidu fil Ard Do not create or cause corruption in the Earth. What do they Do? Qaalu They say Inna Nahnu Muslihun Indeed we are only reformers, we are only making peace Tafseer Qila Root Letters Qaaf/Waw/Laam like the word Qaalu Qila it was said. When it was said to them. Who said it? It could mean Allah Swt or Prophet Sws or the Believers. The statement has been kept general. No matter who says this to them, Do not create corruption in the earth, this is their response. La Tufsidu is from the word Fasaad; Root letters Faa/Seen/Daal, The word Fasaad literally is when something goes bad. To cause corruption, cause disorder, to do mischief so that the things are not normal, situation is not normal. There is corruption. For e.g. when a person lies to another, when he breaks his promise, does not fulfil a commitment, cheats the other, theres going to be disorder and not peace! And when it is said to them, do not create Fasaad in the earth, Ard Root Letters Hamza/Raa/Daad The word Ard applies to the entire earth, a particular land, to a country, to a particular region. Now, what does it mean by Fasaad fil Ard or creating disorder in the earth? Basically, fasaad or disorder in the earth is caused by the acts of disobedience to Allah Swt, when a

person does not obey Allah Swt, theres going to be Fasaad. And this fasaad is of 2 types 1. On the physical earth. E.g. when people cheat, or lie or are not truthful in their transactions to one another, then there is punishment from Allah Swt, which comes in the form of Famine, draught, there is disorder on the earth. For e.g. when Firawn did not listen to Musa alayhissallam, Surat ul Araaf Ayaat No. 30, And certainly we seized the people of Firawn with years of famine and loss of their provision, their fruit. Why? Because they disobeyed the Messenger. So when people disobey Allah Swt, there is disorder on the physical earth, people suffer from calamities, natural disasters, from things like famine. 2. Fasaad among the Ahlal Ard i.e. the dwellers of the earth, those who live on the e arth people or animals, but mainly people. Fasaad Fi Ahlal ard is for e.g. lying to other people, cheating, breaking promises, not fulfilling commitments, that creates fasaad between people, ruins relationships, people mistrust each other, people go to lengths of killing each other, physically hurting each other. And when it is said to them La Tufsidu fil Ard Do not create fasaad in the earth. This fasaad refers to both the types of fasaad. How are the Hypocrites causing fasaad? They were disobeying Allah Swt, bringing about Allahs punishment upon them; and also they were creating disharmony, ill feelings among the people. When somebody lies about you, backbites you, how do you feel? When they are told, what is their response? Allah Swt says: Qaalu Innama Nahnu Muslihun Indeed we are but reformers, we are only reformers. Innama Inna means indeed. Ma is extra word (Extra words, they do not carry their literal meaning in the context, you dont translate them as you would otherwise translate them, but they have a purpose sometimes the purpose is Emphasis, other times the purpose is Hasr. Hasr means to constrict, to limit, and to confine) Indeed the reality is only this! So Qaalu they say, Innama Indeed the reality is that, Nahnu Muslihun we are only those people who are making reforms. In other words, we are far away from making fasaad. Muslihun Plural of Muslih (One who makes Islaah) Islaah Root letters Saad/Laam/Haa; derived from the word Salaah. Salaah is when something is right and proper, it is as it should be, it is correct. Islaah means to put things right after they have been corrupted, to fix things after they have been corrupted, to repair, to improve. So, they say that we are not Mufsid, We are only Muslih, we are only making reforms, we are only putting things right. By this statement, they mean that No, we are not creating any fasaad, what we are doing is right. It shows that the Hypocrites, they are unaware of the reality of their deeds, they consider their wrong actions to be such actions that are for the purpose of Islaah, they consider their wrong actions to be their correct actions. They think that doing bad is equivalent to doing good, they dont perceive things correctly. For e.g. a person says I am lying only because I want to please, I want to make people laugh, whats the big deal! It shows that the Hypocrites, they dont perceive the reality as it is. Remember, they are AdDaulleen those who dont have Ilm, knowledge. We learn in Surat ul Kahf Ayaat no. 103-104 Say (O Muhammad): Shall we inform you of the greatest losers in respect of their deeds? Who are they? They are those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work, while they think that their actions are good! So, which people suffer most with regards to their actions those people whose actions are limited to the life of this Duniya only, and the whole time they think that they are very good. Just like the Hypocrites; who think that their bad deeds are actually good. What does Allah Swt sayAlaa Unquestionably Innahum Humul Mufsiduna Indeed it is they, Only they, who are the corruptors Wa Qilla Yashurun But they do not perceive it

Tafseer The word Alaa is combination of A and La. Both the words form one word together. But you cannot break this down as A Istehfahm and La meaning NOT. No, it is one word together. The word Alaa is one with which a sentence is begun or initiated, in order to alert the listener. Its not just Ala, its Alaa (theres a Madd on the La). When a sentence begins this way, it alerts the listeners. And its called HARF TAMBIH. Tambih means Exclamation. In English, when you want to shout out a statement, you put it in Capital letters, you use a lot of exclamation marks at the end. But in Arabic, you dont necessarily need the help of Capital letters or exclamation marks; you have it within the words. If you say Alaa, its a very forceful statement. Its a statement that is said with a lot of emphasis, with exclamation. So, it gives a benefit of beginning the sentence with an exclamation, sometimes for the purpose of warning or to alert; and also the word Alaa is used to show or prove the authenticity of that which is mentioned afterwards. So, what benefit does the word Alaa give? 1. Of Exclamation 2. Of showing or proving the authenticity of that which is mentioned afterwards Just like the word Inna means Indeed this is true, similarly, Alaa means Unquestionably this is the reality, this is the fact. What is? That Innahum humul Mufsidun Indeed it is they, the Hypocrites, who are the Mufsidun, who are those who create Fasaad. But do they get it? No, they dont even realize. Notice here Hum is mentioned twice. Why? For the purpose of Emphasis. And remember, whenever a Pronoun (Hum - They), occurs like this, meaning, on its own, (The 2nd hum is not attached to any other word. The 1st hum is attached to Innna) and its also repeated it gives a meaning of Emphasis and also provides a meaning of Hasr (of confining the meaning to a particular thing). It means Indeed, it is they, only they, only these people, none other than them; who are Mufsidun, those who create Fasaad. This statement has so much emphasis in it. 1. Alaa 2. Inna 3. Hum So much emphasis. So, Allah Swt is telling us very clearly that do not doubt this fact at all. Do not be fooled by their statement. It is indeed these people who are the Mufsid. Wa la Qilla Yashurun But they dont perceive/realize. Yashurun is from root letters Sheen/Ain/Raa So, Allah Swt says Indeed it is they who spread mischief; but they do not realize that it is actually they who are creating fasad, that by their actions they are not doing Islaah, istead they are spreading Fasaad. Also this indicates that when they did fasaad, e.g. cheating, they thought Allah and his Messenger have no idea of the reality. So, they do corruption secretly and display righteousness; but the reality is Allah Swt knows about their actions. So, they dont realize the fact that all of their actions are known to Allah Swt. Also, many a times, people give advice thinking thats what is going to bring Islaah, that is what going to fix things, going to improve the situation, but in fact it is the contrary. It is what creates Fasaad. Next Ayaat, Allah Swt says: Wa Iza Qila Lahum And when it is said to them who say to them? Anyone. No matter who says to them, this is the only response that they give. What is said to them? Aaminu All of you believe. Believe How? Kama Aamanannaas Just as the people have believed. What is their response? Qaalu They reply Anuminu Kama Aamanassufahaa Should we believe as the foolish have believed? Meaning we are not going to believe. You think we are foolish? We are not going to believe like these people have believed. Allah Swt says: Alaa

Unquestionably Inna hum humussufahaau Wa la qilla yalamun It is they who are the foolish, but they dont know it at all. Tafseer Wa Iza Qila Lahum Aaminu They are told believe, Believe in what how? How? Kama in the same way as Aamannaas as the people have believed The word Kama is combination of Ka and Ma. This Kaaf is called Harf TASHBEEH. Tashbeeh is when two things are similar, they resemble each other. So Believe, meaning you should have Iman like whose Iman? Just as People have believed. Now which An-Naas does it refer to? In particular, it refers to the Sahaba The Companions of Prophe t Sws. What was their Iman/Faith like? Faith that was true, sincere. What they said, they did; was also in their hearts. It was such Iman which had commitment, in which there was sacrifice, in which there was action. The Sahaba, they proved their Iman to be true as well. When they are told, Believe in the same way; meaning do something as well, dont just say you are a believer! So, when they are told Aaminu Kama Aamannaas, what is their response? They say Anuminu Kama Aamanassufahaa - Should we believe as the foolish ones have believed? Who are they calling foolish? An-Naas, The Sahaba, The Companions of Prophet Sws. This A gives menaing of Shall/should. Its a question. Remember, a question is asked for a several reasons, or a question is used in several ways. Several times a question is asked to really demand an answer. But sometimes, a question is asked not to get an answer. Its called a Rhetorical Question, meaning there is no answer that is required. Just a question that has been said to make the other person think, or to prove something. Should we believe as the foolish ones have believed? They are not asking permission. Its a Rhetorical Question; they are not really looking for information. Theres always a reason for Rhetorical Question. Over here, the purpose is Negation. I am (We are) not going to believe as the foolish ones have believed. And also for the purpose of Tahkeer; to belittle/humiliate something. They are belittling what they are invited to (The Iman/Proper Iman). They are saying No, we are not going to. Are you crazy? Are you in your mind? What are you asking us? They called the true believers foolish, sufahaa. Sufahaa Plural of Safih Seen-Faa-Yaa-Haa Root Letters Seen/Faa/Haa Safahaa means foolishness, to have little intellect/understanding of something, to be foolish Literally, the word Safaha is when something is very light in weight. It is said Safahateerihushshay The wind blew away that particular thing, because it was very light things that are light/ useless/ purposeless/ meaningless (dry leaves, paper). Safaha is foolishness, as the person who is foolish is very light mentally; in his mind he is very light. He can easily be swayed, easily be convinced to do something. On the other hand, a person who is very firm, who have deep understanding, who are intelligent/clever, its difficult to convince them. People who are very smart, you have to have a lot of confidence and determination to convince them to do something. So Safaha is foolishness, and literally it means to be light in weight. People who are foolish, generally are convinced very easily, they are very light in their position and determination. So, they are calling the Believers Sufahaa foolish. Why? They are not respecting them, Ok. But why are they calling them Foolish? What acts of Believers seems like foolishness to them? Which actions? Believers, they believe in the Unseen, Allah Swt They follow the Messenger They feel He is just a human being. Why dont you question? Why dont you use your mind? Because of the sacrifices that the Believers were making in the way of Allah Swt. The Hypocrites, they became Believers, they outwardly show Iman, to get some worldly benefits. They came into Islam to get some benefits. The Believers came into Islam and they were losing the benefits. So, they called the Believers foolish. So for them, the Iman that required you to pray 5 times a day in

Masjid, the Iman that required you to give Sadaqah, to spend your wealth in the way of Allah Swt, to make sacrifices, that Iman was foolishness to them. So, they say, should we believe like the foolish have believed? Allah Swt says: Alaa Innahum Humussufahaau wa la Qilla Yalamun Unquestionably, it is indeed they who are the foolish but they dont know it at all. In this Ayaat also, theres so much emphasis 1. Alaa 2. Inna Indeed 3. Hum It is indeed these people only, who are foolish. How or why are the Hypocrites foolish? Real foolishness is when a person does not see and benefit from that which is truly beneficial for him. What is beneficial for a person The Deen. If a person gets some benefits in the Duniya, how long can he enjoy them? For some time. But if he sacrifices now, he gets benefits later on. What is that? That is success. That is being clever, smart. We sacrifice now, so that we can benefit later on. This is the Principle that we apply almost in every aspect of our lives whether its education, whether its our relationships, no matter what it is. But when it comes to Deen, we think something else completely, we think completely differently. Allah Swt tells us in Surat ul Baqarah Ayaat No. 130 And who will be aversed to the religion of Ibrahim Alayhissalaam (Religion of Ibrahim Alayhissalaam was Tawhid, same religion Prophet Sws brought.); except for the one who makes a fool of himself. He is leaving that which is more beneficial, for that which is not beneficial. Alaa Innahum Humussufahaau. But do they realize their foolishness? No. Wa la Qilla Yalamun. They call them Foolish because of their Deen, the Religion that they practise, and the sacrifices they have made. So, Allah Swt says It is indeed they who are foolish; but they dont know. What do they dont know? What they not have Ilm of? That which is foolishness (safahaa/beneficial) and that which is not foolishness (safahaa/beneficial). They dont have Ilm, knowledge. Remember, they are Addaulleen, Daull is someone who does not have Ilm and who does not even act upon that Ilm. Then Allah Swt says: Wa Iza Laqoo And when they met. Who? Al Ladhina Aamanu Those who have believed Qaalu They say Aamanna We have believed Wa Iza Khalav Ila Shayaateenihim And when they are alone with their evil ones Qaalu Inna Maakum They say Indeed we are with you Innama Nahnu Mustahziun Indeed we were only mocking Tafseer Laqoo Root Letters Laam/Qaaf/Yaa Derived from the word Laqiya means to come face to face with someone, to meet someone, to come across. Wa iza Laqoo and when they meet. Who? Al Ladhina Aamanu in other words, when they come face to face/ come across/ sit with the Believers. Who? The Hypocrites. What do they do? Qaalu Aamanna They say to the Believers Aamanna. We have also believed. This shows that when they are with the Believers, they profess faith, they claim to have Iman. Immediately, they begin to talk about their piety, righteousness, religiosity, they make claims about their righteousness. We are also

Believers; we are also pious, righteous. Immediately when they see the Believers, they start talking about the Deen. Why do they do this? Because inside, there is guilt; there is a fear. So, when they see the Believers, they say we are also Believers. Wa Iza Khalav Ila Shayaateenihim But when they are alone with their evil ones, devils. Khalav Root Letters Khaa/Laam/Waw Derived from the word Khala/Yakhlu; means to be empty. Imagine a place to be empty. When the word Khalav/Khalva is followed by Ila, like over here, it means to be alone with someone. The place is empty except for you and the other person. When they have secluded themselves with their evil ones, when they are alone with their evil ones. The word Khalva Ila also conveys the meaning of being alone with someone in order to take some counsel/advice. Shayaateen Plural of Shaitaan Root Letters Sheen/Taa/Noon Derived from the word Shatana which means to be far. Shaitaan is far from the Mercy of Allah Swt/ Truth/ Guidance/ that which is good/ from all Khair. The word Shaitaan is not just limited to Iblis. We read in Surat unNaas that Shaitaan is from among the Jinns and also from among Human beings. So, basically, anyone, whether from the Jinns or Human beings, who is evil in nature, in the sense that they command and promote evil/ wrong, they insight others to do evil, they are called Shaitaan. Shaitaan over here, refers to their evil leaders. Why are their leaders described as Shayaateen? Because they promote evil, they command them to disobey Allah Swt. So, when they are alone with their leaders, Qaalu They say Inna Maakum Indeed we are with you in faith, in religion, we are at your service, we are your followers, we will do exactly what you tell us to do, we practise what you command us to do, we obey you, we will listen to you, we are on your side. Why do they say this to the leaders? Because they are afraid. When they go to the Believers, they say we have believed because they are scared of the Muslims. When they go to their leaders, they say we are with you; because they are scared of them. If you think about it, such a person is not on either side. He is not loyal/ faithful to anybody/ one. When he is with one group, he says I am with you; when he is with another group, he says I am with you. Well, who are you with? Make up your mind. Decide which side you are going to already. You may have seen people who cheat others, who lie to others they are not even truthful to their parents, to those who are very sincere to them. Their own parents, theyll lie to them. If they have to cheat, they dont care if the person is their friend, sibling, parent or relative. They dont care. So a person, who lies, cheats; is not sincere to anybody. Why do they have this double-faced attitude? Because they are afraid. What else do they say to their leaders? Innama Nahnu Mustahziun Indeed we were only mocking. We are mockers, we are only mockers! Mustahziun Plural of Mustahzih (one who does Istihzah) Root Letters Meem indicates Noun. Remove it Seen-Taa they are extra letters like in Nastaeen, Istikhaara, Istighfaar. They cant be part of Root Letters. Waw/Noon at the end indicates Plural We are left with Haa/Zay/Hamza; which are the root letters The word Istihzah means to make fun of someone, to make someone a target of laughter, to laugh at someone, upon considering them to be of little importance or value. When someone is considered of little importance, people make fun of them, mock at them. Also, Istihzah is to make fun of something or someone upon finding them Khilaafatul Akl (against the i ntellect). When someone is doing something that doesnt make sense to you, when something is in a way that doesnt make sense to you. For e.g. when someone is dressed in a particular way, you dont understand why they are dressed like this, in this much heat, why are they covered from head to toe it seems to be against intellect, against sense, it doesnt make sense.

Indeed, we were only mocking. Mocking at whom? At the Believers. How? By saying that we are Believers and they actually believed us. We were only making a fool of the Believers, we were laughing at the Believers, we were just making fun of the Believers. Allah Swt says: Allahu Yastahziubihim Allah mocks at them Wa Yamudduhum Fi Tughyaanihim Yaamahun And prolongs them in their transgression while they wander blindly Tafseer Notice how Allah Swt says that He mocks at them. Whats the meaning Allah mocks at the Hypocrites? Because if you think, mocking/laughing at others is not really a positive thing to do. In Arabic, there is a concept known as MUSHAAKALA (from the word Shak) is when the same word which is used to describe the offence, is used to indicate the punishment for that offence. And this is a recognised manner of speech in Arabic. Remember, that both the times the word is used, it implies a different meaning. For e.g. Allah Swt says in Surat us-Shuraa Ayaat No. 40 The punishment or recompense for and evil is an evil that is like it. The person, who hits the other, is doing an evil. But the person who is taking revenge and he is hitting the other person back, is not doing something evil. He is taking revenge; He is justified for doing that action. So, technically, taking revenge is not evil; but it has been called evil. Why? Because the same word has been used. The word that was used to describe the offence is the same as the punishment for that offence. Why is this done? To show that the person who is taking revenge is able, he has the ability, power, strength to take revenge, Nothing can stop him. So, similarly when this word is used for Allah Swt, Allahu Yastahziun it shows that Allah has the power to take revenge, to inflict punishment upon them. Also it shows that Allah Swt will punish them for their Istihzah or mockery; or the consequences of their mockery will be on these people, the same people. It means Allah Swt will take revenge from them; Allah Swt will inflict punishment upon them for their having mocked the Believers. So you see who is Allah Swt defending over here The Believers. They said about the Believers that we were only mocking at the Believers; Allah Swt says that Allah mocks at them; and not the Believers mocks at them. It shows how Allah Swt defends the Believers. Remember, if you are doing something for Allah Swt and you suffer, whether it is humiliation, some physical hurt, some fatigue or anything at all, know that Allah Swt is on your side. Why? Because you are doing what you are doing for the sake of Allah Swt. Allah Swt tells us in Surat ul Hajj Ayaat No. 38 Indeed Allah defends those who have believed. Allah is on their side! And it is also said that the Hypocrites, literally will be mocked at in the Hereafter; and thats going to be the greatest Istihzah against them. Hadeeth: According to Ibn Abbas Radhi Allahu anho, in the Hereafter, while the Hypocrites will be in the Hellfire, a door will be opened for them leading them to Paradise. And they will run towards that door. But that door is going to be closed/shut on their faces. Then another door will be opened so that they can escape and they can enter Jannah, but again as soon as they reach the door, that door is going to be closed upon them. It is going to be shut upon them. And then this thing will continue. Allahu Yastahziu They were making fun of the Believers, they will be made of tomorrow. Remember, that making fun of others is something very dangerous. Many times, we make fun of others, and the same thing happens to us, exactly the same thing happens to us! Sometimes we have seen it with others; sometimes we have experienced it ourselves. Wa yamudduhum And he prolongs them Fi Tughyaanihim yaamahun in their transgression while they wander blindly Yamudduhum Root Letters Meem/Daal/Daal Derived from the word Madda/Yamuddu; which literally means to stretch something lengthwise, to increase something in its length. So Yamudduhum He extends/prolongs for them, He lets it continue Fi Tughyaanihim in their Tughyaan/rebellion

Tughyaan Root Letters Taa/Ghain/Yaa Derived from the word Tagha; which literally means to cross the bounds, to exceed the limits. In Surat ul Haqa Ayat No. 11, we read that When the water, it crossed its bounds; we carried you in the ship. Its the story of Nooh alayhisalaam. Tagha is when water crosses its limits/ bounds. What is the bound of water? If it is lake or sea, then its the shore. So, Tughyaan of water will be going b eyond the shore. This is the literal meaning of Tughyaan. Now, Tughyaan in action would be that Allah Swt has set limits for us. This is right/ permissible; this is wrong/ not permissible. Tughyaan is when the person does not care about the limits. What is their Tughyaan/ Transgression? What is the excess that they were committing? Their Istihzah/ mocking/ lying/ arrogance/ denial/ I dont care attitude. Whats the meaning Yamudduhum Fi Tughyaanihim He prolongs them in their Tughyaan? He just lets them do whatever they wanted to do. He doesnt catch them immediately. He doesnt inflict punishment upon them immediately. He gives them respite, more and more opportunities to do the wrong that they do. And many a times, when people are in situation where they are doing something wrong and they are able to do wrong, what do they think? They are right, everything is fine. Nothing is wrong because if it was something wrong, they should not have been ally, they should have been stopped. So, He prolongs them in their transgression, in their wrong ways. What are they doing? Allah Swt says they are Yaamahun They are wandering blindly. Yaamahun Root Letters Ain/Meem/Haa Derived from the word Aamaha; which is used for the blindness of the Heart. There is blindness of the sight, when a person is not able to see. He is not able to use his eyes. There is another type of Blindness Blindness of Heart, in which a person is not able to comprehend/ understand/ realize/ relate. You know how certain situations/ concepts you say I get it! Other things you say I just dont get it! Aamaha is a feeling of I dont get it, when a person does not understand, does not get it. And otherwise, Aamaha is also used for a state of confusion, where a person is just wandering blindly. He doesnt see the obvious, that which is in front of him. So Yaamahun they are lost, they are in state of confusion, they are wandering blindly. What is their state of confusion/ wandering blindly? Their state of being engrossed in the wrong actions/ deeds and not seeing the wrong actions that they are committing; in the acts of disobedience and not seeing those wrong deeds. Wa Yamudduhum Fi Tughyaanihim Yaamahun They continue in their wrong ways wandering blindly. You see, the Hypocrites, they have an attitude which can be described as I dont care attitude. You warn them, they dont realize; you tell them, they dont realize; you show them, they dont see; you explain to them, they mock; something serious, they make fun. Its I dont care attitude and its a sign/ way of a Hypocrite, that he crosses the limits Tughyaan. Crossing the limits, not caring about any limits this is what Tughyaan is, and this is the characteristic of Hypocrites. And the Believers, they are different. Believers care. They are Muttaqeen, they are careful, they have Taqwa, and they are alert / concerned / conscious. There is an incident reported that we learn about, Abdullah Ibn Zubair said -'The two righteous ones, Abu Bakr and 'Umar, were nearly destroyed when the delegation of Banu Tamim came to the Prophet (S.A.W.). One of them pointed to al-Aqra b. Habis al-Tamim al-Hanzali, the brother of Banu Majasha, and the other indicated someone else. Then Abu Bakr said to 'Umar: 'Surely, you only wish to contradict me'. 'Umar said: 'I did not wish to contradict you'. And their voices rose in front of the Prophet (S.A.W.), and the verse was revealed: 'O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet nor address him the way you do each other lest your deeds be in vain and you perceive not. Those that lower their voices in the presence of the Prophet, they are those whose hearts Allah has tested for piety; for them is forgiveness and a great reward". Ibn Abi Malika said that Ibn al-Zubayr [later] said: "Thereafter 'Umar didn't mention the matter regarding his father, i.e., Abu Bakr, and whenever he spoke to the Prophet about something, he would do so in a whisper and could not be heard to the extent that the Prophet had to tell him to speak up".

Believers do not commit Tughyaan. But a Hypocrite, when He is reprimanded, if he is made to realize some mistake; he does not care. And when he does not care, Allah Swt - Yamudduhum Fi Tughyaanihim Yaamahun He leaves them in their Tughyaan; and what do they do? They lose insight/ the ability to perceive the reality, ability to figure out even what is right, what is wrong; their actions are correct or not. Hadeeth - It is attested to by what At-Tirmidhi authentically relates in his Sunan (no. 2837), from Abu Hurayrah - radhiallahu 'anhu that the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "Two qualities do not come together in a hypocrite: Good manners and conduct, and the understanding of the Din." The Hypocrite, Fi Tughyaanihim Yaamahun, they are wandering blindly. No idea whats going on. Then Allah Swt says about the Hypocrites: Uaaikal Ladhina Ishtarawu addalaalata bil huda, Fama Rabihat Tijaratuhum wama kanoo Muhtadin Those are the ones who have purchase error in exchange for Guidance. So their transaction has brought no profit. Nor are they guided Tafseer Allah Swt says: Ulaika Those The word Ulaika is used to point something that is far. Why Ulaika is used here? To show how far below, how lowly, how humiliated, how low; are the Hypocrites! How far they are, how deep down they are, in their status in the sight of Allah Swt! We learnt earlier that they will be in the lowest part of Hellfire. Ulaaika Those people. Who are they? Al Ladhina Ishtarawu They are the ones who have bought/ purchased. What have they purchased? Addalaalata Misguidance; in exchange for what? Guidance. Means they have taken Misguidance and they have given away Guidance. Just as you buy some food, or a piece of clothing or something from the store, and you give your money in exchange. So, they have taken Dalaala; and what have they given Guidance! Ishtarawu Root Letters Sheen/Raa/Yaa Derived from the word Shiraa; which means to buy, to take one thing in exchange for another, and it also gives a meaning of sell, to buy and to sell. Because if you think of it, both the things happen at the same time. A complete transaction is when you give something in exchange for another. You give something and you take something. So, Ishtarawu they have bought/ purchased. Addalaalata. When you buy something and you pay for it, you give your money for it, the money that you worked so hard to gain; what does that show? That you love that money more or that thing more? That particular thing that you have bought, you love that more. You are giving more preference to it, you are giving priority to it, it is of more value to you, you like it more; that is why you will give the money that you earned in exchange for it, so that you can get that particular thing. You know sometimes people, they work so hard, they make money, save money for so long, they cut out on so many things, they wont spend on extra clot hes, on entertainment, on anything, just the bare minimum; just to be able to save the money; and what do they do with all that money? They buy something with it, for e.g. house, car etc. It shows that the car is of value to them. They give importance to the car. They want it, which is why theyll sacrifice for it. Over here, what are the Hypocrites doing? They are buying/ purchasing/ taking Misguidance. What is the price for that Guidance. The price for Misguidance is Guidance. They give up Guidance in order to get Misguidance. This transaction, what does it show? That they prefer Disbelief/ Shaq/ Doubt over Belief/ Yaqeen/ Certainty! Just imagine a person who is very sick. He has the money to pay for the treatment. But he says, No, I love my money more than my health! Is there any person who does that? People will take loans; their relatives will sell their organs to get money to pay for their treatment. Theyll put their house on mortgage, they would sell their house/ car, and they would do so many things. Why? To get the money so that they can treat their loved ones. But the Hypocrites, what are they doing? Completely opposite! They are preferring Shaq over Yaqeen. They prefer to be in a state of sickness, illness, instead of being in a state of Healthiness. They prefer ignorance to knowledge. Allah Swt sent towards them a Messenger, He sent knowledge, but what did they do? They didnt want it. They gave it up to get

something else. This transaction, Allah Swt says Fama Rabihat Tijaratuhum Their transaction has brought no profit to them wama kanoo Muhtadin Nor were they guided. Rabihat Root Letters Raa/Baa/Haa Derived from the word Ribh; which means to gain some profit. Ribh is also used for the proceeds/ profits that is obtained by a transaction, a business transaction. For e.g. You invest 50,000 and you get 60,000, Profit is 10,000. But Allah Swt says that this transaction that they made, did they get any profit? Did they get any benefit? No, No benefit at all out of it. Why? Because in this Duniya also, they were neither on the side of Believers nor were they on the side of Disbelievers. They were neither here nor were they there. And in the Hereafter also, where are they? In Jannah? No! The word Tijarah; Root Letters Taa/Jeem/Raa; is to trade, to buy and sell at the same time; and it is to buy and sell for the purpose of profit. Muhtadin Plural of Muhtadi one who has received the Guidance, one who accepts the Guidance, one who receives the Guidance and he internalizes the Guidance he has received. Root Letters Haa/Daal/Yaa Wama kanoo Muhtadin And they are not rightly guided at all. This means they are astray/ addaulleen.
