The Feast of St.

Michael and All Angels

Holy Communion (ELW 3) Sunday, September 29th, 2013
INTRODUCTION Michael the archangel, captain of the heavenly hosts, is remembered on this day along with the other angels and archangels. The word "angel" means messenger, and in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, these beings have a fully spiritual nature and no physical body. Saint Michael is pictured as a prince and a general of the heavenly army, defeating the dragon (the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan). It is important, though, to see in Revelation 12:11 that God's victory ultimately comes by Jesus' death and the testimony of his followers. The power of God's truth gives us confidence in the face of evil on earth, even in the face of our own death. We give thanks today as Michael Combs and Lisa Platten, by affirming their baptism publicly, join our congregation in our spiritual life and testimony to Christ. CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and childrens bulletins are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An usher will gladly provide you with assistance. As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service. We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so that we may record your presence with us. PRELUDE

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP Pavana: St. Thomas' Wake John Bull

WELCOME, AND INVOCATION All may stand and make the sign of the cross, the sign with which we are marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. KYRIE Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (ELW 834)

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW Lord God, you have surrounded us with so great a cloud of witnesses. Grant that we may persevere in the course that is set before us and, at the last, share in your eternal joy with all the saints in light, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Everlasting God, you have wonderfully established the ministries of angels and mortals. Mercifully grant that as Michael and the angels contend against the cosmic forces of evil, so by your direction they may help and defend us here on earth, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God whom we worship and praise with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN FIRST READING: Daniel 10:1014; 12:13 But then a hand touched me and roused me to my hands and knees. He said to me, "Daniel, greatly beloved, pay attention to the words that I am going to speak to you. Stand on your feet, for I have now been sent to you." So while he was speaking this word to me, I stood up trembling. 12He said to me, "Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. 13But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me twenty-one days. So Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, and I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia, 14and have come to help you understand what is to happen to your people at the end of days. For there is a further vision for those days." At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence for reflection on the reading.

And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, 8but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming,

"Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. 12 Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand and sing: GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Please be seated SERMON Pastor Charles Peterson Silence for reflection and then we invite you to stand and sing: HYMN OF THE DAY: Holy God, We Praise Your Name (ELW 414)

AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM PRESENTATION The presiding minister addresses the assembly with these or similar words. Dear friends in Christ, we give thanks for the gift of baptism and for Michael and Lisa our brother and sister, one with us in the body of Christ, who are making public affirmation of their baptism. Sponsors or another representative of the congregation presents those making affirmation. I present Lisa and Michael, who desires to affirm their baptism in this assembly. PROFESSION OF FAITH The presiding minister addresses the parents and sponsors of the candidates as well as those making public affirmation of baptism. The assembly may stand and join in the responses.

GOSPEL: Luke 10:17-20 The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.
17

Michael and Lisa: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. The presiding minister addresses those affirming the baptism and then addresses the assembly Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? I renounce them.

The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!" 18He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. 19See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. 20Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Response I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. People of God, do you promise to support and pray for these brothers and sisters, and for one another in your life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Let us rejoice with Michael and Lisa, our brother and sister in Christ. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the Good News to all the world. PEACE Please stand as we greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Let us pray for Michael and Lisa, all others who are affirming their Baptism, and for all the baptized everywhere: Please sit or kneel as you are able. Each petition concludes with: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. AFFIRMATION IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ASSEMBLY Lisa and Michael, you have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God's faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Sunday, September 29, 2013 Michael and All Angels Michael the archangel, captain of the heavenly hosts, is remembered on this day along with the other angels and archangels. The word "angel" means messenger, and in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, these beings have a fully spiritual nature and no physical body. Monday, September 30 Jerome, translator, teacher, died 420 Jerome was a biblical scholar and translator, but rather than translating the original Hebrew and Greek scriptures into classical Latin, he worked in the commonly-spoken Latin of the day, creating a version called the Vulgate. Friday, October 4 Francis of Assisi, renewer of the church, died 1226 Born into the family of a wealthy merchant, Francis gave up his inheritance to serve poor people. He formed the Order of Friars Minor (called Franciscans), who took on poverty and the task of preaching "using words if necessary." Francis had a spirit of gratitude for all of God's creation. Friday, October 4 Theodor Fliedner, renewer of society, died 1864 Fliedner helped to bring about a revival of the ministry of deaconesses among Lutherans. He was influenced in this by Moravian deaconesses he had met. The motherhouse he founded in Kaiserswerth, Germany, inspired many around the world to take up this ministry. Sunday, October 6 William Tyndale, translator, martyr, died 1536 Tyndale was ordained a priest in England, and wished to translate the Bible into English. He was opposed in this by King Henry VIII, causing him to flee to Germany. He completed the New Testament in 1525, but before he could finish the Old Testament, he was tried for heresy and burned at the stake.
