Task: Choose one of the narrative essay prompts below to write about.
Middle School Narrative Prompts 1. Pretend your favorite book character or comic book character came to life for a day. Write a story for your classmates about the character that came to life for a day. 2. Suppose aliens abducted you as you were walking to school. Write a letter to your best friend on Earth telling him or her about this experience. 3. Imagine you are a newspaper reporter covering the Revolutionary War, Civil War, or World War. You find yourself pinned down by a wave of enemy troops. Write a newspaper story telling readers what your experience is like. 4. Suppose you woke up one morning to find that everyone had disappeared and you are the only person left on the earth. Write an account for future generations of what life is like all by yourself. 5. Sometimes we wonder what it would be like if we could fly. Imagine that you woke up one morning and were able to fly. Write a story about where you went and what you did. 6. Suppose you woke up one morning and had magical powers for a day. Write a story about the day you had magical powers. 7. Yesterday at school, you discovered a giant hole in the middle of the playground. Write a story about what happened next. 8. One morning you look outside your bedroom window and discover that a huge castle has appeared overnight. You rush outside to the castle and hears strange sounds coming from it. The castle door creaks open. You go inside. Write a story about who you meet and what happens inside the castle. 9. Write a story about something that has been recycled, like a can, newspaper, or plastic bag, and its adventures along the way. 10. A travel agency is looking for exciting vacation destinations that are a bit out of the ordinary. Imagine that the agency asks you to explore a particular country. Write an account for them that describes the interesting experiences you had there.

Grade-Level Standards: W.7/8.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. To achieve this: W.7/8.3a Engage the reader by establishing a point of view and introducing a narrator and/or characters (First person = I, my, mine; Third person = He, she, they) W.7/8.3c Use a variety of transition words to convey sequence and signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another. (First, then, in addition to, finally, etc.) W.7/8.3d Use sensory language to capture the action - (What you saw, smelled, heard, tasted, or felt).
