Angina

Angina is a symptom usually caused through coronary artery disease.

Angina is a pain which occurs when not enough blood flows for the heart
muscle to function effectively. The cause is usually narrowing of the
coronary arteries, but in an angina attack heart muscle damage does not
result. The pain is usually felt in the center of the chest and may spread to the
arms, neck, jaw, and or back. It is usually a constricting pain or tightness
which may restrict breathing. Sharp stabbing pains on the left side of the
chest are not due to heart disease.

Hardening of the arteries

Normal Advanced Dangerous

WHAT IT IS:
Atherosclerosis is the gradual build-up of deposits, initially
cholesterol, but in the later stages includes substances, under the inner
lining of the artery walls. It is a slow progressive disease which may start
in childhood. The aetherosclerotic plaques progressively narrow the
artery and decrease the blood flow. The disease may involve arteries
in many different parts of the body, including the heart (which may
lead to peripheral vascular disease or claudation).
CAUSES: Atherosclerosis is accelerated by high blood cholesterol
levels, high blood pressure and cigarette smoking.
RESULTS: High Blood Pressure, Stroke, Heart Attack

Blood Pressure
Hypertension, "The Silent Killer"
WHAT IT IS:
Hypertension is the medical term used when blood
pressure is consistently raised, even when the patient
is at rest. Blood pressure is influenced by 2 factors:
the amount of blood pumped by the heart and how
easily the blood can flow through the narrow arteries.
The narrower the arteries,
the harder it is for blood to
flow through them and the
higher the blood pressure.

Advanced cases may cause severe headaches, visual disturbances; nausea and
vomiting; sleepiness and even seizures in severe cases.
CAUSES:
Family history. Unhealthy diet, (excessive salt intake). Excessive alcohol intake.
Overweight. Lack of exercise. Stress. Kidney disease, diabetes. Smoking.
RESULTS:
Heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and premature death. Two out of three
people with high blood pressure are unaware of the condition.

People can get diabetes at any age.
Diabetes means that your blood glucose (often called blood
sugar) is too high. Too much glucose in the blood isn't good for
your health and can cause you to have diabetes.
After many years, diabetes can lead to serious problems in your
eyes, kidneys, nerves, and gums and teeth. But the most
serious problem caused by diabetes is heart disease. When
you have diabetes, you are more than twice as likely as
people without diabetes to have heart disease or a stroke.
If you have diabetes, your risk of a heart attack is the same
as someone who has already had a heart attack. Both
women and men with diabetes are at risk. You may not
even have the typical signs of a heart attack.
But maybe you haven't been diagnosed with diabetes, and
neither has anyone close to you. You may be wondering
why you need to be concerned.

The answer? Many millions of new cases won't

be diagnosed for years -- but some already have
their beginnings in today's unhealthy lifestyles.
This means that you (or someone you care about)
may already have diabetes, or develop it, if you are
aging, eating an unhealthy diet, are obese,
and/or are living a sedentary (non-active) lifestyle.

Heart Attack
When arteries
become too narrow
(because of atherosclerosis-
build-up of fatty material on the
inside of artery walls) or
a clot forms, blood flow to the heart
is restricted. When the blood supply
to the heart or part of the heart is cut
off, the heart muscle is deprived of
oxygen and is damaged. This is a heart
attack and the severity of the attack
depends on the extent of the damage to
the heart muscle.

Coronary artery disease (disease of the arteries leading to the heart) is the
most common cause of heart attacks. Although a heart attack is often a
sudden and dramatic event, it is the result of a gradual process over many
years. Atherosclerosis causes gradual narrowing of arteries leading to the
heart and can cause a total blockage of the artery and the blood flow to the
heart muscle, causing a heart attack.
Atherosclerosis is caused or aggravated by unhealthy eating habits,
smoking, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity,
obesity and diabetes.

Heart disease Chronic chest diseases

The costs of cardiovascular disease:

A recent study emanating from the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town and the Chronic Diseases of
Lifestyle Programme at the Medical Research Council (MRC) reveals that:
The estimated cost of cardiovascular disease in South Africa in 1991 was between R4,135 and R5,035
Billion. This does not include the cost of rehabilitation and follow up of CVD. About three quarters of the
direct costs were carried by the private sector.
The direct health care costs were ± 42% of the total costs. The indirect cost reflects the balance and
includes the loss of productivity and earnings lost as a result of premature death.
CVD mortality costs amounted to ± R1,864 and morbidity ± R999,2 million.
The expenditure on CVD in state hospitals was ± R461,3 Billion.

Causes of Cardiovascular diseases (CVD)

Smoking
Currently there are 3½ million smoking related deaths a year. This means that every 10 seconds a person dies
from the effects of tobacco use; this excludes all those whose deaths are related to passive smoke exposure. It is
predicted that smoking related deaths have increased to 10 million per year, 7 million of which are in developing
countries.
It is predicted that tobacco will be a bigger factor than HIV in determining health in 2020.
Physical statistics: Smoking
Doubles your risk of heart attack, and doubles it again if you smoke heavily
Doubles your risk again if you have high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol
Increases the risk 10 times if you are a woman on the contraceptive pill
Increases your risk of gangrene by over five times

Obesity
Obesity (Fatness, overweight) is set to overtake smoking as the greatest cause of heart disease. In South Africa
over 45% of the population is classified as being obese. This is one of the highest rates in the world. 50% of
white South African males are clinically obese. There is a higher ratio of obese women in SA than the USA.
Childhood obesity is on the increase.
Alcohol
Excessive consumption of alcohol can cause heart problems such as raised blood pressure, heart muscle
damage, heart rhythm disturbances and increased levels of triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood.
Excessive alcohol intake also contributes to the development of other diseases (obesity, diabetes, liver disease,
etc.) as well as psychological, social and emotional problems.
Excessive alcohol intake can cause anything from fatal liver damage to a stroke. Alcohol is poison to the body
and, drunk in excess, can cause untold damage to health and shorten your life by more than 10 years.
Diabetes
People can get diabetes at any age.
Diabetes means that your blood glucose (often called blood sugar) is too high. Too much glucose in the blood
isn't good for your health and can cause you to have diabetes.
After many years, diabetes can lead to serious problems in your eyes, kidneys, nerves, and gums and teeth. But the
most serious problem caused by diabetes is heart disease. When you have diabetes, you are more than twice

Both women and men with diabetes are at risk. You may not even have the typical signs of a heart attack.

beginnings in today's unhealthy lifestyles. This means that you (or someone you care about) may already have
diabetes, or develop it, if you are aging, eating an unhealthy diet, are obese, and/or are living a sedentary (non-
active) lifestyle.

Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension) is termed the "silent killer" as there are rarely visible symptoms. More
advanced cases however may cause headaches, especially pulsating headaches behind the eyes; visual
disturbances; nausea and vomiting; sleepiness and even seizures in severe cases. Two out of three people with
high blood pressure are unaware of the condition.
It is estimated that 1 in 4 South Africans between the ages of 15 and 64 years suffer from high blood pressure. It is
one of the leading causes of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and premature death.
What is hypertension?
Hypertension is the medical term used when blood pressure is consistently raised, even when the patient is at rest.
Blood pressure is influenced by 2 factors: the amount of blood pumped by the heart and how easily the blood can
flow through the narrow arteries. The narrower the arteries, the harder it is for blood to flow through them and
the higher the blood pressure.
What harm does high blood pressure do?
High blood pressure sufferers may feel perfectly well for years but are none the less at risk of damage to arteries and
vital organs. Compared to people with controlled high blood pressure, people with uncontrolled high blood
pressure are:
Three times more likely to develop heart disease
Six times more likely to develop heart failure
Seven times more likely to have a stroke

Only 5 % of the South African population can claim to have normal or acceptable micro circulation.
Good circulation is the key to good health. Blood carries nutrients to the cells and removes toxic
waste, both of which are necessary functions for maintaining healthy tissue.

Cholesterol

A high blood cholesterol level is seen as dangerous to our health, because excess amounts are deposited on the
inside of arteries. If the blood cholesterol level continues to be high, more fatty material is deposited, narrowing the
artery even more, resulting in restricted blood flow to the heart and other areas of the body. The restricted blood
flow encourages formation of a blood clot, which may cause the final blockage. Less often, the fatty deposits close
the artery. If the blood flow is blocked off completely, it can result in a heart attack or stroke.
High cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease, which include smoking, high blood pressure,
lack of physical exercise and obesity. The higher the cholesterol level, the higher the risk for heart disease.
80% of Westernized South Africans have raised blood cholesterol, of which 20% have levels that place them at
high risk of developing heart disease.
Types of Cardiovascular diseases (CVD)
Heart Attack
When arteries become too narrow (because of atherosclerosis - build-up of fatty material on the inside of artery
walls) or a clot forms, blood flow to the heart is restricted. When the blood supply to the heart or part of the heart
is cut off, the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen and is damaged. This is a heart attack and the severity of the
attack depends on the extent of the damage to the heart muscle.
Coronary artery disease (disease of the arteries leading to the heart) is the most common cause of heart attacks.
Although a heart attack is often a sudden and dramatic event, it is the result of a gradual process over many years.
Atherosclerosis causes gradual narrowing of arteries leading to the heart and can cause a total blockage of the
artery and the blood flow to the heart muscle, causing a heart attack.
Atherosclerosis is caused or aggravated by unhealthy eating habits, smoking, high blood cholesterol, high
blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes.
Heart attack is also known as myocardial infarction.
Angina
Angina is a symptom usually caused through coronary artery disease. Angina is a pain which occurs when not
enough blood flows for the heart muscle to function effectively. The cause is usually narrowing of the
coronary arteries, but in an angina attack heart muscle damage does not result. The pain is usually felt in the center
of the chest and may spread to the arms, neck, jaw, and or back. It is usually a constricting pain or tightness which may
restrict breathing. Sharp stabbing pains on the left side of the chest are not due to heart disease.

Stroke
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying oxygen and nutrients to the brain either bursts or becomes
clogged with a blood clot.
A build up of fatty material in the walls of arteries causes gradual narrowing of these arteries. In the most
common type of stroke, a clot forms at a point where the artery to the brain has narrowed. This clot can cause an
obstruction in the blood flow to the brain. As a result, part of the brain does not receive the flow of blood (and
the accompanying oxygen and nutrient supply) it needs and the affected brain cells start to die. This is called a
stroke or brain attack.

Women
It is not only men that get heart disease.
To put it into context, for every one woman with breast cancer, two women will have heart disease.
Heart disease is one of those major diseases affecting South African women. Of concern is the fact that unlike
men, women are more prone to die after a heart attack.
The overwhelming perception that heart disease is a man's disease and that women are more likely to die of breast
cancer than heart disease is alarming. Although women tend to develop heart disease 10 years later in their lives
than men, the effects are generally greater for women.
One of the reasons why women have a higher heart disease-related death rate is simply because they live longer. One
in 3 men and 1 in 4 women are at risk of heart disease before the age of 65.
Women are particularly vulnerable as warning signs of a heart attack are less evident. The symptoms that women
experience are markedly different from those experienced by men. Approximately 35% of heart attacks in women
are believed to go unnoticed or unreported. Also, because of increased age, women are more likely to also have
other diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Cancer
Causes: Smoke, car fumes, radiation.
Just what is cancer? Much more basic then you may realize - "cells that have gone astray and instead of dying, split
(multiply) uncontrollably. Most body cells are programmed to self destruct or die after 30 or more days, but damage can
turn off that built in signal, giving a cancer cell.
Most cancer experts believe we all develop cancer hundreds if not millions of times in our lifetimes. Given the trillions of
developing cells the millions of errors that occur in the differentiating (maturing) process of each cell, and our constant
exposure to smoke, car fumes, radiation. diets etc, the laws of probability dictate that mis -developing cells must occur
frequently in the life cycle of each individual. Damage to cells happen frequently, due to energy rays and reactive
chemicals. When this happens the cell dies, the body triggers a growth response in a nearby cell to replace it.
In South Africa the average risks are as follows - male one in six whilst female is one in seven. The figures amongst
white are 1/3 male and 1/4 in female and along with the Asians whose ratios are 1/6 and 1/5 respectively.
As we all know, the only medically approved current treatments for cancer involve chemotherapy and
radiation- Both extreme and often fatal.
What can be done about this situation?
The solution:
1. Live a healthier lifestyle.
2. Prevention and Eradication of Diseases Instead Of Treatment Of Symptoms.
Dr Rath (USA) who is the physician and scientist who led the breakthrough in the natural treatment of
cardiovascular disease and cancer say the following:
“Eighty percent, yes (80 %) of pharmaceutical drugs currently prescribed to patients (your own family) have no
proven efficacy (effectiveness) - at the very best, they alleviate symptoms without addressing the root cause
of the disease. Future health care systems will focus on prevention, treatment of root causes and eventually the
eradication of diseases." Web site of world renowned Dr Rath www.dr-rath-health-foundation.org .
Properly used prescription drugs are the fourth largest cause of death in the USA (106,000) behind heart disease,
cancer and stroke. When improperly used prescriptions drugs and properly used prescriptions drugs are
combined, they are the third largest cause of death, following cancer and cardiac in the USA. In excess of
more than 2. 2 million American people suffered side effects so severe that they were permanently disabled or
required long hospital stays. Does the situation in South Africa differ?
Today’s most common diseases can now be largely eradicated by natural therapies,
thereby improving human health globally.
