GraduateInstructor WRT308:AdvancedStudioinStyle|Spring2013 Inthisupperdivisionwritingstudio,studentsengagedinasemesterlongpraxisinrhetoricalstyle.Rooted in classic rhetorical pedagogical techniques such as imitatio, Erasmuss de copia exercises, Raymond QueneausExercisesinStyle,studentspracticedandevaluatedstylisticprinciplessuchastropesandfigures at both the sentence and genrelevels. In so doing, they honed their chops in a variety of selfselected genresandmediafordifferentaudiences,purposes,andeffectswhileexploringtherhetorical,aesthetic, social,andpoliticaldimensionsofstyle. WRT307:ProfessionalWriting|Fall2012|Coursewebsite Inthiswritingintensiveupperdivisionworkshop,studentscollaborativelypracticedrealworldprofessional genresinavarietyofmedia,manyofthemforarealclient.WorkinginpartnershipwiththeNeighborsof theOnondagaNation(NOON),anonprofitactivistgroupworkinginsolidaritywiththeOnondagaNation tosupportHaudenosaunee(Iroquois)sovereignty,Iworkedtosustainacourseenvironmentrunmorelike a professional organization than a classroom. Students first completed an onboarding unit where they produced, critiqued, and revised basic workplace genres such as cover letters, memos, and professional summaries of qualifications while studying the context, vision, and goals of the client. In Unit 2, they designed sets of instructions using print, visual, and digital media, conducted usability testing on their instructions,producedausabilityreport,andrevisedtheirinstructionsbasedontheirfindings.Inthefinal collaborative unit, they produced client proposals and final deliverables in a variety of media, including educational videos, a webbased fundraising initiative, an updated website, and two polished letters of inquirytoseparatefoundationfundingsources.
