ProLINK COMMS is an abridged version of ProLINK, providing limited functionality for transferring and manipulating data files between any Sokkia device and a personal computer. ProLINK COMMS communicates with any Sokkia device. You can modify the data file by editing values, inserting and deleting records, and establishing job and unit settings. Then you can export the files to local drives or software programs. A security device is needed to run the full version of ProLINK. If you run your ProLINK software without a hardware security device, ProLINK COMMS will open. Functionality will be limited to the following: archive your data from devices import data to a single field book insert and delete records search and replace records edit data values edit job setting options select unit settings export raw data

Total Station and GPS RTK data ProLINK COMMS enables you to receive, edit, and export total station and GPS/RTK collected data. Data editing The Field Book Editor provides full data editing. You can insert or delete records. Existing records can be edited using standard Windows functions of cut, copy and paste along with manually typed data. You even can use the comprehensive search and replace tools. Send and Receive data to multiple devices ProLINK COMMS enables you to send and receive data to and from multiple devices. The data from appropriate devices can be downloaded to your PC and then imported directly into the field book. Data from other Sokkia devices can be received and saved to the PC for storage or to use in other programs. Exports You can export raw data from the current field book using SDR format or other predefined coordinate conversions, such as DXF, MOSS, ICS, SDMS and ASCII coordinates. Conversions ProLINK COMMS will contain a limited number of predefined conversion definitions for importing and exporting ASCII data. Field book ProLINK COMMS relies on a single field book to manage data files; raw data gathered on a variety of devices is stored, organized, edited and analyzed. A field book can also be printed for viewing or archiving purposes. Field Book Settings Job settings for the field book are selected and saved using the Field Book Settings option from the Field Book menu. These settings are used when exporting or sending SDR formats, allowing you to apply different corrections and parameters. Project-oriented approach ProLINK COMMS uses a project approach to easily manage your data and project-related parameters, including Field Book Settings and Unit Settings. This approach facilitates better organization and archiving. Intuitive File management ProLINK COMMS incorporates an intuitive method of file management as found with ProLINK. You dont have to remember to save your work. The program automatically saves it for you at critical points in the workflow, such as when the project is closed, renamed or moved.

Installing the Software


With this option, you can install ProLINK (if hardware lock is recognized) or ProLINK COMMS (if hardware lock is not available). If you have a hardware lock available, but ProLINK functionality has not been activated, ProLINK COMMS will run. Install the software as follows: 1. Insert the ProLINK COMMS CD-ROM in the appropriate drive. The installation program will start automatically. If not, locate your CD-ROM drive in Windows Explorer and double-click the Setup.exe at the top level of the CD-ROM. Select Install ProLINK from the available choices. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen. You can exit or cancel the install at any time. When the installation is complete, store your original CD in a safe place. You can also use the Copy installation files to disk option (use diskettes or your hard drive) for backup purposes. If you have a properly-activated hardware lock, ProLINK will run; if not ProLINK COMMS will run. To activate full functionality for ProLINK, run Remote Activation by selecting Update hardware security on the ProLINK CD-ROM. The Remote Activation program displays the functionality that is currently enabled on your hardware lock and the locks serial number. To update the functionality, you need to order an update code from an authorized Sokkia dealer, then enter the code into the Remote Activation program. You can install Remote Activation from the CDROM to have direct access for future hardware-lock update options.

Determining Which Program is Running


You can determine which programProLINK or ProLINK COMMSis running by verifying the software name in the following locations: title bar of the application initial splash screen when loading the application the Help About dialog box accessed from the Help menu

* Note: When opening ProLINK and the port containing the hardware security device is busy, you may open ProLINK COMMS.

Learning the Main Screen


ProLINK COMMS main screen, as shown, consists of five parts from top to bottom: Title bar displays the name of the program, ProLINK or ProLINK COMMS, and the name of the current project. Menu bar displays menu titles which represent the programs options. Toolbar displays icons that represent commonly-used commands. Field Book Editor provides access to raw data for reviewing and editing. Status bar displays the status of a current program operation and displays additional information about selected menu items and icons.

The ProLINK menu structure is organized as shown in this table. The menu titles are shown at the top of the table. Below the menu titles are the items available from each pull-down menu; the items in bold are available only in ProLINK.

* Note: When some menu items are displayed in a different color from the others, or shaded, it may mean you are running ProLINK COMMS and the functionality is not available or it may mean you cannot select the items now, the requirements have not been met. For example, if you select File from the menu bar, but dont have a project open and displayed on your screen, the options associated with an open project file (Close Project, Rename/Move Current Project, Make Snapshot Copy, Abandon Changes, Update Backup, Import, Export and Print) are shaded. You cannot use these options until you have opened a project file.

Basic Operations
1. ProLINK enables you to send and receive data from a device to a personal computer (PC), or you can open a project in ProLINK and manipulate your data before sending it to a file or a device. To send or receive data and simply store it to your PC, skip to Step 3; to open a project and manipulate your data, proceed to Step 2. Select File | New Project from the main menu to create a new project. After the project is created, the ProLINK program displays the Field Book Editor:

The Field Book Editor contains individual files, field books, which store, edit and display the raw data. * Note: ProLINK COMMS is limited to one field book.

3. You can add data files to the field book by first downloading the data from a device to your PC, then importing the data files from the PC into the field book. When importing more than one file to your project, ProLINK will combine multiple data files into one field book.

* Note: ProLINK COMMS uses only predefined import conversions with an *.sdf extension. These conversions automatically show in the Receive and Import dialogs. User-defined conversions (*.tdf), created in ProLINK, cannot be used in ProLINK COMMS. To download files from the device to your PC, choose the File | Send Receive option to open the Download/Upload dialog box. Make sure your device is connected to your computer, then select the proper device by double-clicking the device name in the Device window. Alternatively, you can choose your device from the Device Type list.

Click the <Settings> button to open the Communications Device Settings dialog box to edit any communications settings before you transfer your files.

In the Download/Upload dialog box, check the Local Machine window to make sure the directory to which you want to download your files is selected. If not, change to the appropriate directory now.

Click on the files in the Device window that you want to transfer to your PC, then click the transfer arrow to copy the files from the SDR to the PC.

As the files are downloaded to your PC, the Local Machine window will update to show the files. Once all your files are downloaded to your PC, click the <Close> button to close the Download/Upload dialog box.

* Note: ProLINK COMMS can edit only SDR data files. To import the files into ProLINK COMMS, choose File | Import from the main menu. The Import dialog box will open and enables you to import data files from your PC into ProLINK COMMS. You may choose the import conversion type from the Import Conversion list.

4. ProLINK COMMS allows you to edit your data in the Field Book Editor. You can import data files, edit data, and define job settings. In the Field Book Editor, the raw data in each field book is presented in a hierarchical tree structure, with icons representing each record type. You can insert and delete individual records using the Insert Record and Delete Record options on the Edit menu.

By highlighting a single record you can choose Cut or Copy from the Edit menu. Once data has been placed in the clipboard, it can be pasted anywhere within the field book. Use the Search and Replace options (located on the Edit menu) to make multiple changes quickly and easily.

Determine the job settings by selecting Field Book | Field Book Settings from the main menu. ProLINK COMMS will send your data to either a device or a file using the job settings selected in this field. The Reduction Settings and Duplicate IDs in reduced coordinates options are not available for ProLINK COMMS. The Save as Default check box enables the options set in the Job Settings section to be saved and each time a field book is created the saved settings will be maintained.

6. You can change unit settings by accessing Options | Unit Settings from the main menu.

Once the data meets your requirements, you can export your data to the PC using the File | Export option. Then, using the File | Send Receive option, you can transfer that data from your PC to a device.

* Note: ProLINK COMMS uses only predefined export conversions with a *.sdf extension. These conversions automatically show in the Download/Upload and Export dialog boxes. User-defined conversions (*.tdf), created in ProLINK, cannot be used in ProLINK COMMS. The File | Export option enables you to export the contents of the field book to your PC. The format of the exported file may be specified by choosing from the Export Conversion list.

The File | Send Receive option open the Download/Upload dialog box which enables you to transfer data from your PC to your device. Browse your PC from the Local Machine window until you locate the files you want to upload. Choose your device from the Device Type list and click the <Settings> button to change any communication settings before you upload your files.

Click on the files in the Local Machine window that you want to upload to your device, then click the upload arrow to copy the files from the PC to the SDR.

As the files are uploaded to your PC, the Device window will update to show the files. Once all your files are uploaded to your device, click the <Close> button to close the Download/Upload dialog box.

To close your project, select File | Close Project from the main menu to save and close your project.

Remote Activation

The Remote Activation dialog will display, indicating current information about your security device, such the serial number and the currently activated functionality.

To activate new functionality, enter the 16-character activation code in the Code field. Press <Send>. A dialog will display the License Agreement. If you agree to the terms, press <Accept> and the hardware security device will be updated with the new functionality. A dialog will display confirming the update of your Sokkia security device and the functionality will display in the Activated Functionality list. Continue entering activation codes until you are finished, then press <Close>. Congratulations, your Sokkia security device is now upgraded.

Remote Activation Software Quick Start Guide


Remote Activation software allows you to update your Sokkia security device. You can use this program to determine what functionality is currently activated on your security device.

Installing Remote Activation


To install the Remote Activation software, please follow these steps. 1. 2. 3. From the Start button, choose Run. In the Run dialog enter the command line, A:\setup.exe and select <OK>. The Remote Activation Installation Wizard will run, installing the program to your hard drive into a directory entitled, ractive. After confirming the installation, remove the disk from the floppy drive.

Running Remote Activation


Before starting the Remote Activation software, make sure you have a current Sokkia update code for your security device. 1. 2. From the Start button, choose Run. In the Run dialog, enter the command line, C:\ractive\ractive.exe and select <OK>.
